The fate of selected pesticides (bentazone, isoproturon, DNOC, MCPP, dichlorprop and 2,4-D) and a metabolite (2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM)) was investigated under aerobic conditions in column experiments using aquifer material and low concentrations of pesticides (approximately 25 microg/l). A solute transport model accounting for kinetic sorption and degradation was used to estimate sorption and degradation parameters. Isoproturon and DNOC were significantly retarded by sorption, whereas the retardation of the phenoxy acids (MCPP, 2,4-D and dichlorprop), BAM and bentazone was very low. After lag periods of 16-33 days for the phenoxy acids and 80 days for DNOC, these pesticides were degraded quickly with 0.-order rate constants of 1.3-2.6 microg/l/day. None of the most probable degradation products were detected.  相似文献

Fourteen Italian cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris were exposed to a single pulse of ozone (O(3), 150 nl l(-1)) or to filtered air (<3 nl l(-1)) for 3.5 h. O(3) sensitivity was assessed by recording the extent of visible symptoms, effects on chlorophyll (Chl) content and changes in Chl a fluorescence parameters. This paper reports the results of an initial screening of 14 bean cultivars that was used to select a small number of cultivars for further work. Seven cultivars showed visible symptoms of injury in the range of 2-60 h after the end of the O(3) fumigation. O(3) significantly depressed total Chl content in most cultivars and a significant correlation was found between Chl content and visible symptoms. Most cultivars showed a significant change in the F(v)/F(m) ratio, even when there were no visual symptoms. There was no relationship between the extent of visual symptoms and quenching coefficients, indicating that these parameters were of no use in the determination of sensitivity to O(3) stress.  相似文献

The Alamo and New Rivers located in the Imperial Valley, California receive large volumes of irrigation runoff and discharge into the ecologically sensitive Salton Sea. Between 1993 and 2002 we conducted a series of studies to assess water quality using three aquatic species: a cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubia), a mysid (Neomysis mercedis), and a larval fish (Pimephales promelas). Although no mortality was observed with the P. promelas, high-level toxicity to the invertebrate species was documented in samples from both rivers during many months of each year. Toxicity identifications and chemical analyses identified the organophosphorus insecticides (OP), chlorpyrifos and diazinon, as the cause of C. dubia toxicity. The extent of the C. dubia mortality was highly correlated with quantities of these OPs applied in the river watersheds. C. dubia mortality occurred during more months of our 2001/2002 study than in the 1990s investigations. During 2001/2002, the extensive C. dubia mortality observed in New River samples was caused by OP insecticide pollution that originated from Mexico. Mortality to N. mercedis in New River samples was likely caused by contaminants other than OP insecticides. Our studies document OP insecticide-caused pollution of the Alamo River over a 10-year period and provide the necessary information for remediation efforts.  相似文献

Prediction of ozone concentration in ambient air using multivariate methods   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Multivariate statistical methods including pattern recognition (Principal Component Analysis--PCA) and modeling (Multiple Linear Regression--MLR, Partial Least Squares--PLS, as well as Principal Component Regression--PCR) methods were carried out to evaluate the state of ambient air in Miskolc (second largest city in Hungary). Samples were taken from near the ground at a place with an extremely heavy traffic. Although PCA is not able to determine the significance of variables, it can uncover their similarities and classify the cases. PCA revealed that it is worth to separate day and night data because different factors influence the ozone concentrations during all day. Ozone concentration was modeled by MLR and PCR with the same efficiency if the conditions of meteorological parameters were not changed (i.e. morning and afternoon). Without night data, PCR and PLS suggest that the main process is not a photochemical but a chemical one.  相似文献

With the phase-out of methyl bromide scheduled for 2005, alternative fumigants are being sought. This study of Telone C35, a mixture of (Z)- and (E)-1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) with chloropicirin (CP), focuses on its emissions, distribution, and persistence in Florida sandy soil in microplots with different soil-water and organic matter carbon (C) content with and without two different plastic film mulches. The addition of CP did not affect the physical behavior of the isomers of 1,3-D. Slower subsurface dispersion and longer residence time of the mixed fumigant occurred at higher water content. An increase in the percent organic carbon in the soil led to a more rapid decrease for chloropicirin than for 1,3-dichloropene isomers. The use of a virtually impermeable film (VIF) for soil cover provided a more even distribution and longer persistence under all the conditions studied in comparison to polyethylene (PE) film cover or no cover. The conditions of near field capacity water content, low organic matter, and a virtually impermeable film cover yielded optimum conditions for the distribution, emission control, and persistence of Telone C35 in a Florida sandy soil.  相似文献

Concentrations of 23 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), p,p'-DDT and two of its metabolites, p,p'-DDE and p,p'-TDE have been measured in serum samples of up to 1 ml of Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) gathered from five populations in Spain. SigmaPCB concentrations were found to be in the range 3.2-97 ng/ml, while those of SigmaDDTs ranged from 0.93 to 38 ng/ml. p,p'-DDT/p,p'-DDE ratios higher than one were only found in the Segovia population, which could be an indication of recent use of p,p'-DDT in the area. In all cases, PCB profiles were dominated by congeners 52, 132 + 105, 138, 153 and 180. However, some differences among the five populations studied became evident when their profiles were compared with those of technical PCB mixtures by principal components analysis. The DDT and PCB levels detected in the serums analysed were lower than those previously reported for similar avian species and those reported to have deleterious effects on survival or reproduction of birds.  相似文献

The amount of catechin and 4-hydroxyacetophenone in the methanolic extract of the Norway spruce needles at the locality Bíly Kríz (Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mts.) was found in the range 2.8-12.1 mg g(-1) (dry weight) and 0.2-17.7 mg g(-1) (dry weight), respectively. Total amount of catechin (sum of the last three needle year-classes) is statistically higher (p<0.01) in the sparse areas compared to the dense ones and similar trends were recorded for catechin content in current and one-year-old needles. These results may support an idea about primary control of phenolic production by the incident solar radiation, which depends on the social position of the tree and canopy closure degree.  相似文献

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are environmental contaminants found in aquatic ecosystems throughout the world as a result of both anthropogenic and natural production. The ecological risk posed by these compounds to organisms in freshwater environments, with a specific focus on aquatic macrophytes, was characterized. The plants evaluated were Lemna gibba, Myriophyllum spicatum and M. sibiricum and the HAAs screened were monochloroacetic acid (MCA), dichloroacetic acid (DCA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA). Laboratory toxicity data formed the basis of the risk assessment, but field studies were also utilized. The estimated risk was calculated using hazard quotients (HQ), as well as effect measure distributions (EMD) in a modified probabilistic ecological risk assessment. EMDs were used to estimate HAA thresholds of toxicity for use in HQ assessments. This threshold was found to be a more sensitive measure of low toxicity than the no observed effect concentrations (NOEC) or the effective concentration (EC10). Using both deterministic and probabilistic methods, it was found that HAAs do not pose a significant risk to freshwater macrophytes at current environmental concentrations in Canada, Europe or Africa for both single compound and mixture exposures. Still, HAAs are generally found as mixtures and their potential interactions are not fully understood, rendering this phase of the assessment uncertain and justifying further effects characterization. TCA in some environments poses a slight risk to phytoplankton and future concentrations of TFA and CDFA are likely to increase due to their recalcitrant nature, warranting continued environmental surveillance of HAAs.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to test the concentrations of some elements in the transplanted lichen Usnea amblyoclada transplanted in Córdoba, Argentina, and to investigate the relative air quality of the area as indicated by a Pollution Index. Analyses of Cu, Co. Pb, Fe, Ni, Mn, S and Zn in addition to analyses of physiological parameters were performed after the transplantation period. No significant differences were observed among the sampling stations for the physiological parameters, except the dry weight/fresh weight ratio. The concentration of most elements was similar to or lower than those found in non-polluted and even polluted areas. The significant correlation found between Cu, Pb and Zn with the content of hydroperoxy conjugated dienes suggests an important oxidative effect probably caused by these ions. The distribution patterns of the elements were quite similar, with maximum values around a cement plant and the metallurgical industries. The Pollution Index distribution pattern does not coincide with the elements distribution, due to the fact that the index values probably reflected the emissions of gaseous phytotoxic pollutants.  相似文献

Metals contained in the waste transfer to the waste incineration products, including flue gas, fly ash, and bottom ash, as different oxide, nitride, carbides, and other phases. Most of the metal-based phases formed in incineration are toxic and their emissions need to be strictly controlled. Therefore, behavior of metal species during incineration must be well understood. Such understanding is possible based on the experimental identification of the metal phases formed in the waste combustion and determination of their concentration in various incineration products. To avoid well-known experimental difficulties of the industrial waste incinerators associated with the poor fuel/conditions reproducibility and limited instrumentation, a 140,000 Btu/h pilot-scale, laboratory burner was constructed, characterized and operated at NJIT. A synthetic fuel representative of the municipal solid waste in the US was formulated and produced in 600-Lb batches. The solid fuel contained Fe and SiO2 as main constituents, and was doped with trace amounts of Al, Ni, Cr, Hg and PbO. Several experiments have been conducted on combustion of the synthetic fuel in the pilot-scale incinerator with varying fuel-air equivalence ratio. Both gaseous and condensed combustion products were sampled and analyzed. Atomic absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze total metal contents and metal containing phases in the incineration products. Thermodynamic equilibrium computations were performed to obtain the adiabatic flame temperature and identify the phases of the metal-containing products formed at the equilibrium conditions. The results of the equilibrium computations performed at the varied fuel/air ratios were compared with the observed experimental results.  相似文献
