The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the flexible instruments of the Kyoto Protocol designed to combat climate
change so as to bring advantages to developing countries and developed countries alike. Indeed, CDM projects have a two-fold
objective: to offset greenhouse gas emissions and to contribute to sustainable development in the host country. However in
many cases, the latter objective appears to be marginalized. This is at least partly due to the difficulties surrounding the
definition and the measurement of sustainability, in particular in a developing country context. To assess CDM projects’ contribution
to sustainable development in the host country, scholars and practitioners need adapted indicator sets. A set of indicators
were developed by way of an iterative Delphi approach amongst selected Vietnamese experts. The Delphi approach allowed a systematic
collection of the experts’ judgements on the sustainability indicators through a set of sequentially applied questionnaires,
interspersed with feedback from earlier responses. This exercise resulted in the selection of a set of 36 indicators, which
emphasise economic efficiency, public health and pollution issues. The exercise yielded a locally supported and context-specific
set of sustainability indicators that will allow Vietnamese decision-makers to enhance the sustainability of the approved
CDM projects. In the future this set should be continually improved through real-life application and further participation
from local stakeholders. This study is a first step in a long-term process towards developing an adapted toolkit for sustainability

Bioaccumulation of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in a restricted terrestrial food chain was investigated with the omnivorous wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) on top of the studied food chain. The levels detected are very high compared with literature as a result of the presence of fluorochemical plant in the immediate vicinity of the study area. Soil, surface water, fruits of European elder and common blackberry, invertebrates, bank vole and wood mouse were collected at two sites, e.g. Blokkersdijk, adjacent to the fluorochemical plant, and Galgenweel, a reference site 2 km further away. In wood mouse, the highest PFOS concentrations were found in the liver followed by the pancreas, lungs and kidneys, with the spleen having the lowest levels. In the liver, the concentrations ranged from 787 to 22,355 ng/g ww at Blokkersdijk and these were significantly correlated with those detected in the kidneys (13.7–4,226 ng/g ww). If current results are compared to the findings of a previous study conducted in 2002 at the same sites, a significant decrease of PFOS in livers of wood mouse is observed. To the best of our knowledge, so far no studies reported levels of PFOS in terrestrial invertebrates under field conditions. At Blokkersdijk, PFOS was detected in all invertebrate species ranging from 28 to 9,000 ng/g. Soil and water were also contaminated with levels of respectively 68 ng/g and 22 ng/L. Biota-to-soil accumulation factors ranged from 0.11 to 68 for earthworms. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of liver wood mouse/berries were as high as 302. Most North Americans are concerned about the environment and feel that responsibility for its protection lies primarily with government; however, no research to date has examined the influence of the government's approach toward environmental regulation on the motivation of individual citizens. According to self-determination theory, social contexts that support one's autonomy should facilitate self-determined motivation and social contexts that thwart autonomy should lead to non self-determined motivation and a sense of apathy or amotivation. In this study (n = 283), we examined the influence of perceptions of the government's approach toward environmental regulation on motivation toward the environment and frequency of self-reported pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Using structural equation modeling, we tested the hypothesis that frequency of PEB is predicted by motivation toward the environment and that motivation is predicted by the extent to which individuals perceive the government to be autonomy-supportive versus controlling in the implementation of environmental policies. The analysis revealed that perception of government autonomy-support contributed positively to autonomous motivation and negatively to amotivation, while perception of government control was positively related to both controlled motivation and amotivation. As predicted, autonomous motivation was positively, and amotivation was negatively, associated with frequency of PEB. 相似文献

Balancing biodiversity conservation with food security and the preservation of a broader set of ecosystem services is among the greatest challenges of the century. The creation of the International Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), at the interface between decision support and scientific knowledge, is clearly in line with this ecological-economic perspective. IPBES particularly puts forward the development of model-based scenarios making sense economically and ecologically and promoting sustainability. The present paper provides generic modeling methods and tools to address such challenges. The paper argues that the framework of controlled dynamic systems under uncertainty together with ecoviability metrics are especially well suited. Such a modeling framework indeed makes it possible to simultaneously account for complex dynamics, indirect or indirect drivers, uncertainties along with multiple sustainability objectives. These general ideas are exemplified with scenarios relating to two applied fields: (i) fisheries and marine biodiversity and (ii) land-use and avifauna. 相似文献

Between the early 1900s and the 1990s, the greater snow goose Anser caerulescens atlanticus population grew from 3000 individuals to more than 700 000. Because of concerns about Arctic degradation of natural habitats through overgrazing, a working group recommended the stabilization of the population. Declared overabundant in 1998, special management actions were then implemented in Canada and the United States. Meanwhile, a cost–benefit socioeconomic analysis was performed to set a target population size. Discussions aiming towards attaining a common vision were undertaken with stakeholders at multiple levels. The implemented measures have had varying success; but population size has been generally stable since 1999. To be effective and meet social acceptance, management actions must have a scientific basis, result from a consensus among stakeholders, and include an efficient monitoring programme. In this paper, historical changes in population size and management decisions along with past and current challenges encountered are discussed. 相似文献

In geostatistics, both kriging and smoothing splines are commonly used to generate an interpolated map of a quantity of interest. The geoadditive model proposed by Kammann and Wand (J R Stat Soc: Ser C (Appl Stat) 52(1):1–18, 2003) represents a fusion of kriging and penalized spline additive models. Complex data issues, including non-linear covariate trends, multiple measurements at a location and clustered observations are easily handled using the geoadditive model. We propose a likelihood based estimation procedure that enables the estimation of the range (spatial decay) parameter associated with the penalized splines of the spatial component in the geoadditive model. We present how the spatial covariance structure (covariogram) can be derived from the geoadditive model. In a simulation study, we show that the underlying spatial process and prediction of the spatial map are estimated well using the proposed likelihood based estimation procedure. This paper offers an interpretation of the precautionary principle in terms of a safety target that a decision-maker has to
reach at a minimal cost in a robust way. A two-period model is used. The precautionary principle corresponds to a situation
in which the decision-maker, facing an ex ante indecision, is not able to reach a safe target from the initial condition in a worst-case framework. However, he can efficiently
succeed whenever the uncertainty at the second period is revealed to him. An example coping with the management of a renewable
resource illustrates the general results of the paper.

The evolution of daytime fa?ade noise levels by road traffic at 250 dwellings in Flanders is assessed. Three identical man-operated measurement campaigns have been conducted in the years 1996, 2001 and 2009, during fall. A practical methodology has been developed, based on short time noise measurements and context observations at these locations. The uncertainty introduced by short-term sampling has been quantified as a function of the noise level. Furthermore, a correction is proposed for measuring at a random moment during daytime. Analysis of the data showed that road traffic noise levels hardly changed globally over this period of 13 years. The distribution of changes in noise level at corresponding measurement locations is nevertheless rather wide-all improvements are equally compensated by increases in noise levels at other locations. The percentage of the dwelling fa?ades exposed to daytime noise levels above 65 dBA has increased slightly between 1996 and 2001, but seems to stagnate in 2009. In spite of the increased interest and actions of policy makers during the past decades, noise exposure caused by road traffic at dwelling fa?ades is a persistent problem. 相似文献

The daily and seasonal atmospheric concentrations, deposition fluxes and emission sources of a few C3–C9 gaseous alkyl nitrates (ANs) at the Belgian coast (De Haan) on the Southern North Sea were determined. An adapted sampler design for low- and high-volume air-sampling, optimized sample extraction and clean-up, as well as identification and quantification of ANs in air samples by means of gas chromatography mass spectrometry, are reported. The total concentrations of ANs ranged from 0.03 to 85 pptv and consisted primarily of the nitro-butane and nitro-pentane isomers. Air mass backward trajectories were calculated by the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model to determine the influence of main air masses on AN levels in the air. The shorter chain ANs have been the most abundant in the Atlantic/Channel/UK air masses, while longer chain ANs prevailed in continental air. The overall mean N fluxes of the ANs were slightly higher for summer than those for winter-spring, although their contributions to the total nitrogen flux were low. High correlations between AN and HNO2 levels were observed during winter/spring. During summer, the shorter chain ANs correlated well with precipitation. Source apportionment by means of principal component analysis indicated that most of the gas phase ANs could be attributed to traffic/combustion, secondary photochemical formation and biomass burning, although marine sources may also have been present and a contributing factor. 相似文献
