Developing an early warning model to predict the driver’s mental workload (MWL) is critical and helpful, especially for new or less experienced drivers. The present study aims to investigate the correlation between new drivers’ MWL and their work performance, regarding the number of errors. Additionally, the group method of data handling is used to establish the driver’s MWL predictive model based on subjective rating (NASA task load index [NASA-TLX]) and six physiological indices. The results indicate that the NASA-TLX and the number of errors are positively correlated, and the predictive model shows the validity of the proposed model with an R2 value of 0.745. The proposed model is expected to provide a reference value for the new drivers of their MWL by providing the physiological indices, and the driving lesson plans can be proposed to sustain an appropriate MWL as well as improve the driver’s work performance. 相似文献

Summary The ripe fruit of the Indian mulberry,Morinda citrifolia, is the host plant forDrosophila sechellia but is highly toxic for three closely related species (D. melanogaster, D. simulans, D. mauritiana). A simple bioassay is described with which a clear dose response to the fruit was found for these species. Significant differences in reactivity to the ripe fruit were found among species. Tested strains ofD. simulans andD. mauritiana adults were more sensitive to the toxic properties of the fruit thanD. melanogaster. A marked intraspecific variability was shown inD. melanogaster. Reciprocal interspecific hybridizations betweenD. sechellia andD. mauritiana suggested an autosomal dominant control of resistance. MoreoverD. melanogaster intraspecific crossings suggested the influence of an additional X-linked factor. Responses of flies toMorinda fruit in different states were tested in a T olfactometer. Summary. Cotesia plutellae is a specialist parasitoid of Plutella xylostella. This specificity is potentially under the control of several factors before and after oviposition. Thereby, the stimuli
that lead female parasitoids to host locations and to oviposition, might be at the basis of the specificity. We explore here
the response of C. plutellae females exposed to host cuticular lipids. A total cuticular lipid extract of host caterpillars was fractionated into a hydrocarbon
fraction and a non-hydrocarbon fraction. Neither fraction alone had any effect on oviposition behaviour in C. plutellae but the hydrocarbon fraction alone did seem to have a positive effect on the rate of antennal contact by the females. To
induce oviposition behaviour, both fractions were necessary and reflect cooperation between at least one compound in each
fraction. Identification of cuticular lipids shows that hydrocarbons were dominant (77%). Non-hydrocarbon compounds were mainly
represented by 15-nonacosanone (18% of the total lipid extract). This ketone is rare in insect cuticle lipids and is thought
to originate from the cabbage epicuticle where it is dominant with n-C29 and 14- and 15-nonacosanol also found among the cuticular lipids of the host caterpillar. 相似文献

The environmental situation in Ghana is characterized by desertification, land degradation, deforestation, soil erosion, and
inadequate water supply in the northern regions of the country. The population as a whole is growing at a rate of 3% per annum,
with even greater urban growth rates, due to rural out-migration. Large parts of the coastal zone in the south are rapidly
developing to become one large suburbanized area. Water quality is particularly threatened in the urban and industrialized
areas, which are mainly located in the southern part of the country. The coastal lagoons and coastal waters are moderately
to heavily polluted. Erosion extends along the whole Ghanaian coast with excesses, for example, in the Keta area, where during
the last century over 90% of the original buildings have been washed awayby the sea. The obvious environmental consequences
of the mining sector are illustrative of the environmental threats caused by a fast growing industry and industrializing agriculture,
in a country where environmental policy is only in its formative years. Desertification, food insecurity and coastal erosion
all contribute to an increasing number of environmental refugees.
Environmental policy in Ghana is a post-Rio phenomenon. Environmental laws, a Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology,
an advisory National Committee for the Implementation of Agenda 21, and a fully mandated environmental administration have
been established. This administration advocates a progressive attitude towards environmental legislation and points out the
specific utility of economic and legal instruments in environmental management in this relatively fast developing country.
The choice of instruments for environmental management is increasingly influenced by the specific state of African environmental
and technological capacity and by a call for the recognition of the role of traditional customs in nature conservation. This
African perspective on environmental management is further intensified by an unmet need for regional, transboundary cooperation
in the West African subcontinent. This specific West African context calls for an elaboration of an effective capacity-building

Over the last years, great progress in the research on speciation of butyltins has been made. Many coupling techniques have been successfully developed, with better applications to sediments samples in the environment. Sediments were collected from 1999 to 2000 to elucidate butyltin pollution in Theoule harbour. Most of the analysed samples showed evidence of butyltin compounds. The results show that the concentration of Tributyltin (TBT) was in the range 20–200?µg/kg in March 1999, 20–340?µg/kg in June 1999, 180–1280?µg/kg in July 2000, and 55–820?µg/kg in October 2000. A comparison of the MBT, DBT, and TBT results show that in 1999 the concentrations were in the order TBT?DBT?>?MBT, with some exceptions. The patterns observed in many sediment cores show a great disparity of organotin input concentration among the cores collected during one month and also during two different months, and from one season to the other. This paper provides information on the use of the acetic acid leaching system in the determination of butyltin. The method is applied to evaluate the occurrence of these species in sediments from the Theoule harbour, between 1999 and 2000. The linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) sorption on environmental sediments has been known long ago. Their high concentrations reflect the massive input of these chemicals from household and industrial uses. However few attempts were made to identify biodegradation metabolites of LAS in sediment. In this report, a method for the determination of these compounds in sediment samples by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is described. The first step of our work was performed by solid‐phase extraction with octadecyl‐bonded silica (C18) mini‐columns and provided a suitable recovery of LAS (90 ± 5%) and most metabolites. Furthermore, laboratory investigations led to study the behaviour of LAS in sediment. The environmental samples used for this purpose were collected from a pond (named étang de Bolmon) located in the French Mediterranean coast. Our results were in agreement with an aerobic biodegradation process of LAS that occurred only with high values of sediment redox potential and needed the samples to be vigorously shaken to ensure adequate mixing and suspension of particulate material. In a stagnant sediment or under anaerobic conditions, LAS is not degraded. p‐Sulfophenylacetic acid and p‐sulfocinnamic acid were evidenced as predominant metabolites and were found not to be persistent. 相似文献

Spatio-temporal variability in settlement and recruitment, high mortality during the first life-history stages, and selection
may determine the genetic structure of cohorts of long-lived marine invertebrates at small scales. We conducted a spatial
and temporal analysis of the common Mediterranean Sea urchin Paracentrotus
lividus to determine the genetic structure of cohorts at different scales. In Tossa de Mar (NW Mediterranean), recruitment was followed
over 5 consecutive springs (2006–2010). In spring 2008, recruits and two-year-old individuals were collected at 6 locations
along East and South Iberian coasts separated from 200 to over 1,100 km. All cohorts presented a high genetic diversity based
on a fragment of mtCOI. Our results showed a marked genetic homogeneity in the temporal monitoring and a low degree of spatial
structure in 2006. In 2008, coupled with an abnormality in the usual circulation patterns in the area, the genetic structure
of the southern populations studied changed markedly, with arrival of many private haplotypes. This fact highlights the importance
of point events in renewing the genetic makeup of populations, which can only be detected through analysis of the cohort structure

The optimal design of multicontaminant industrial water networks according to several objectives is carried out in this paper. The general formulation of the water allocation problem (WAP) is given as a set of nonlinear equations with binary variables representing the presence of interconnections in the network. For optimization purposes, three antagonist objectives are considered: F(1), the freshwater flow-rate at the network entrance, F(2), the water flow-rate at inlet of regeneration units, and F(3), the number of interconnections in the network. The multiobjective problem is solved via a lexicographic strategy, where a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) procedure is used at each step. The approach is illustrated by a numerical example taken from the literature involving five processes, one regeneration unit and three contaminants. The set of potential network solutions is provided in the form of a Pareto front. Finally, the strategy for choosing the best network solution among those given by Pareto fronts is presented. This Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problem is tackled by means of two approaches: a classical TOPSIS analysis is first implemented and then an innovative strategy based on the global equivalent cost (GEC) in freshwater that turns out to be more efficient for choosing a good network according to a practical point of view. 相似文献

This paper describes part of a programme of work undertaken at the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) to investigate the behaviour of selected water-reactive chemicals. Following an accidental release, such substances react exothermically with any water present, generating acidic vapours. The STAWaRS (Source Term Assessment of Water Reactive Substances) software was developed for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by ESR Technology to model this complex process. The aims of the study described here were to provide experimental validation of the heats of hydrolysis used within STAWaRS, and to perform sensitivity studies on selected STAWaRS input parameters.The heat of hydrolysis of acetyl chloride was measured and showed good correlation with the value used within STAWaRS. Some of the variables that influence the severity of acetyl chloride spills are examined, with reference to predictions made by the STAWaRS model. The heats of hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride previously measured at HSL are also discussed, and the effect of adopting these experimentally derived values for modelling spills is shown for a hypothetical land use planning case. This study demonstrates the importance of using experimentally validated values for STAWaRS input parameters. 相似文献
