Before waste-water-relevant organic materials are to be found in large quantities, their specific behavior in sewage treatment plants must be known. With the aid of the OECD simulation test #303 A, an estimation of their elimination in biological clarification stages can be made. In this work, an economical and continuous testing system is presented, which consists of a polyester flies bound to an activated biosludge with a high inoculum density, allowing one to measure no only the elimination of individual substances, but also the specific degree of mineralization. The toxicity of the activated biosludge and the nitrifying substances can also be examined. With the described testing procedure, it is possible to determine the rate of degradation within only a few hours. Finally, it can also be seen that it is possible to reliably and continuously determine the rate of anaerobic, biological degradability through the use of such a modified testing procedure. 相似文献
Female ornaments in species with conventional sex roles often indicate individual quality, but the evolutionary forces maintaining
them are less clear. Sexual competition for breeding opportunities may represent an important role for female signals, especially
in polygynous species, but there is little experimental evidence for this. The wing patch size (WPS) of female collared flycatchers
indicates age and body condition and predicts social mating patterns. We challenged nest-building females with decoy females
of varying WPS and found that the aggressive response of residents increased with decoy WPS, suggesting a role for this female
ornament in territorial competition. Our results explain why female WPS predicts territorial distances when mated to a polygynous
male and indicate that the role of WPS in female competitive interactions is similar to that in males of the same population. 相似文献
Due to their high phenotypic plasticity, the expression of secondary sexual characteristics is particularly sensitive to stress.
Here, we investigated the expression of two conspicuous visual signals in great tits (Parus major) in a metal pollution gradient. In three study sites with marked differences in metal contamination (mainly lead, cadmium,
copper and zinc), we compared melanin and carotenoid colouration of great tits. While carotenoid colouration (yellow breast)
was negatively related to metal pollution, the size of a melanin trait (breast stripe) was larger in the most polluted sites.
Environmental pollutants not only affect the expression of conspicuous signals but may even enhance, directly or indirectly,
a signal of male quality such as breast stripe. Our results also support the multiple messages hypothesis predicting that
different signals highlight different aspects of geno- and phenotypic condition of the bearer. 相似文献
Loggerhead turtles nesting in the Mediterranean Sea exhibit remarkable genetic structuring. This paper tests the hypothesis that young loggerhead turtles from different rookeries do not distribute homogeneously among the major Mediterranean foraging grounds, due to a complex pattern of surface currents. We extracted long fragments of mitochondrial DNA from 275 stranded or bycaught juvenile turtles from six foraging grounds (Catalano-Balearic Sea, Algerian basin, Tyrrhenian Sea, Adriatic Sea, northern Ionian Sea and southern Levantine Sea). We used a Bayesian mixed-stock analysis to estimate the contributions from rookeries in the Mediterranean, the North-west Atlantic and Cape Verde to the studied foraging grounds. Differences were found in the relative contribution of juvenile turtles of Atlantic and Mediterranean origin to each foraging ground. A decreasing proportion of Atlantic juveniles was detected along the main surface current entering the Mediterranean, with a high prevalence of turtles from eastern Florida in the Algerian basin and lower numbers elsewhere. In regard to the turtles of Mediterranean origin, juveniles from Libya prevailed in central and western Mediterranean foraging grounds other than the Algerian basin. Conversely, the Adriatic Sea was characterised by a large presence of individuals from western Greece, while the southern Levantine Sea was inhabited by a heterogeneous mix of turtles from the eastern Mediterranean rookeries (Turkey, Lebanon and Israel). Overall, the distribution of juveniles may be related to surface circulation patterns in the Mediterranean and suggests that fisheries might have differential effects on each population depending on the overlap degree between foraging and fishing grounds. 相似文献
Aerobic and anaerobic microbial key processes were quantified and compared to microbial numbers and morphological structure
in Mediterranean sponges. Direct counts on histological sections stained with DAPI showed that sponges with high microbial
abundances (HMA sponges) have a denser morphological structure with a reduced aquiferous system compared to low microbial
abundance (LMA) sponges. In Dysidea avara, the LMA sponge, rates of nitrification and denitrification were higher than in the HMA sponge Chondrosia reniformis, while anaerobic ammonium oxidation and sulfate reduction were below detection in both species. This study shows that LMA
sponges may host physiologically similar microbes with comparable or even higher metabolic rates than HMA sponges, and that
anaerobic processes such as denitrification can be found both in HMA and LMA sponges. A higher concentration of microorganisms
in the mesohyl of HMA compared to LMA sponges may indicate a stronger retention of and, hence, a possible benefit from associated

The complex songs of songbirds are thought to have evolved through sexual selection. Sexually selected signals must be associated
with costs in order to ensure their honesty as indicator of male quality. Costs may relate to the development of the neural
substrate underlying song learning, which develops already very early in life. Song may, therefore, serve as an indicator
of the early developmental history. This nutritional stress hypothesis has initially been confirmed for a variety of species,
but recent studies using zebra finches as a model species reported somewhat inconsistent effects, and the functional consequences
of changes in adult song phenotype remain unclear. We tested the nutritional stress hypothesis in canaries by manipulating
either the brood size or the food quality postfledging. The brood size manipulation had a significant effect on early development,
and low food quality postfledging led to a transient reduction in body mass. However, we did not find evidence that any of
the song traits measured reflected the early developmental conditions, which is in conflict with the nutritional stress hypothesis.
Canaries may be less vulnerable to nutritional stress or are able to compensate stressful conditions during early development.
However, if males compensated, this compensation may have come at a survival cost. Female mate choice decisions were independent
of the developmental history of a male. Instead, females preferred males singing longer song bouts, a trait that may contain

During the extreme dry year of 2006, abnormal salinity conditions in the Changjiang Estuary of the Yangtze River occurred
in partial coincidence with the second impoundment phase of the TGD (Three Gorges Dam). Analysis of discharge observations
in the upper reaches of the estuary and of salinity observations in the estuary as a whole reveals that in 2006 salinity was
over 100 mg/l during 275 days, over 250 mg/l during 75 days and over 400 mg/l during 48 days. It is well known that this is
due to extreme low discharges from the upper catchment area into the estuary. Moreover, large amounts of water consumed along
the lower reaches of the Yangtze River can also aggravate the low discharges that lead to stronger saltwater intrusion in
the estuary. Of the 75 days that salinity was over 250 mg/l, the low discharge was decreased further by 10 to 20% due to water
consumption. The additional impact of the impoundment phase of the TGD (lasting 37 days in autumn) was noticeable only during
7 days in 2006. During that period, the relative contributions of the TGD and the water consumption in the lower reaches of
the Yangtze River amounted to 70 and 30%, respectively. It may be concluded that the impact of the second impoundment phase
of the TGD on salinity intrusion in the estuary was modest, while the extreme drought of 2006 was the dominant cause. 相似文献
In the present study, a land suitability assessment was conducted in the basin of four Uruguayan coastal lagoons (Southwestern Atlantic) to analyze the productive development while minimizing eutrophication, biodiversity loss and conflicts among different land uses. Suitable land for agriculture, forest, livestock ranching, tourism and conservation sectors were initially established based on a multi-attribute model developed using a geographic information system. Experts were consulted to determine the requirements for each land use sector and the incompatibilities among land use types. The current and potential conflicts among incompatible land use sectors were analyzed by overlapping land suitability maps. We subsequently applied a multi-objective model where land (pixels) with similar suitability was clustered into "land suitability groups", using a two-phase cluster analysis and the Akaike Information Criterion. Finally, a linear programming optimization procedure was applied to allocate land use sectors into land suitable groups, maximizing total suitability and minimizing interference among sectors. Results indicated that current land use overlapped by 4.7?% with suitable land of other incompatible sectors. However, the suitable land of incompatible sectors overlapped in 20.3?% of the study area, indicating a high potential for the occurrence of future conflict. The highest competition was between agriculture and conservation, followed by forest and agriculture. We explored scenarios where livestock ranching and tourism intensified, and found that interference with conservation and agriculture notably increased. This methodology allowed us to analyze current and potential land use conflicts and to contribute to the strategic planning of the study area. 相似文献
We use GEOS-Chem chemical transport model simulations of sulfate–ammonium aerosol data from the NASA ARCTAS and NOAA ARCPAC aircraft campaigns in the North American Arctic in April 2008, together with longer-term data from surface sites, to better understand aerosol sources in the Arctic in winter–spring and the implications for aerosol acidity. Arctic pollution is dominated by transport from mid-latitudes, and we test the relevant ammonia and sulfur dioxide emission inventories in the model by comparison with wet deposition flux data over the source continents. We find that a complicated mix of natural and anthropogenic sources with different vertical signatures is responsible for sulfate concentrations in the Arctic. East Asian pollution influence is weak in winter but becomes important in spring through transport in the free troposphere. European influence is important at all altitudes but never dominant. West Asia (non-Arctic Russia and Kazakhstan) is the largest contributor to Arctic sulfate in surface air in winter, reflecting a southward extension of the Arctic front over that region. Ammonium in Arctic spring mostly originates from anthropogenic sources in East Asia and Europe, with added contribution from boreal fires, resulting in a more neutralized aerosol in the free troposphere than at the surface. The ARCTAS and ARCPAC data indicate a median aerosol neutralization fraction [NH4+]/(2[SO42?] + [NO3?]) of 0.5 mol mol?1 below 2 km and 0.7 mol mol?1 above. We find that East Asian and European aerosol transported to the Arctic is mostly neutralized, whereas West Asian and North American aerosol is highly acidic. Growth of sulfur emissions in West Asia may be responsible for the observed increase in aerosol acidity at Barrow over the past decade. As global sulfur emissions decline over the next decades, increasing aerosol neutralization in the Arctic is expected, potentially accelerating Arctic warming through indirect radiative forcing and feedbacks. 相似文献
Chemical emissions from research and development (R&D) activities are difficult to estimate because of the large number of chemicals used and the potential for continual changes in processes. In this case study, stack measurements taken from R&D facilities at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) were examined, including extreme worst-case emissions estimates and alternate analyses using a Monte Carlo method that takes into account the full distribution of sampling results. The objective of this study was to develop techniques to estimate emissions from stack measurement data that take into account a high degree of variability in the actual emissions. The results from these analyses were then compared to emissions estimated from chemical inventories. Results showed that downwind ambient air concentrations calculated from the stack measurement data were below acceptable source impact levels (ASILs) for almost all compounds, even under extreme worst-case analyses. However, for compounds with averaging periods of a year, the unrealistic but simplifying extreme worst-case analysis often resulted in calculated emissions that were above the lower level regulatory criteria used to determine modeling requirements or to define trivial releases. Compounds with 24-hr averaging periods were nearly all several orders of magnitude below all, including the trivial release, criteria. The alternate analysis supplied a more realistic basis of comparison and an ability to explore effects under different operational modes.
Implications:
Air emissions from research operations are difficult to estimate because of the changing nature of research processes and the small quantity and wide variety of chemicals used. Stack measurements can be used to verify compliance with applicable regulatory criteria. This study shows that while extreme worst-case assumptions can be used for a relatively simple initial comparison, methods that take into account the full range of measurement data are needed to provide a more realistic estimate of emissions for comparison to regulatory criteria, particularly those criteria that define trivial levels of environmental concern.相似文献
