Laboratory-scale studies were aimed at elucidating the physico-chemical aspects on the removal process of crystal violet (CV) from waters and solid substrates. The laponite clay (RD) and sand were chosen for the double aim at investigating them as CV adsorbents for water treatment and as substrates which mime the soil components. Sand is very effective in removing CV from waters. The cyclodextrins (CDs) were exploited as solubility-enhancement agents to remove CV from the solid substrates. They are powerful solvent media because they extract the CV from sand forming water-soluble CV/CD inclusion complexes and do not show affinity for sand. Optimum performance was shown by the modified CDs (i.e. hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and methyl-β-cyclodextrin). A linear correlation between the logarithm of the equilibrium constant for the CV/CD inclusion complexes formation (Kcpx) and the maximum amount of CV extracted from sand in the columns experiments at a flow rate of 1.5 ml min−1 was drawn. This relationship predicts that CDs with Kcpx < 180 M−1 are not suitable for CV removal from sand. The aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability as well as the aquatic toxicity of two fatty amine oxides and one fatty amido amine oxide were investigated. Aerobic biodegradation was evaluated using the CO(2) headspace test (ISO 14593) and biodegradation under anaerobic conditions was assessed employing a standardised batch test. The three amine oxide based surfactants tested were readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions but only the alkyl amido amine oxide was found to be easily biodegradable under anaerobic conditions. Toxicity to Photobacterium phosphoreum and Daphnia magna was evaluated. Bacteria (EC(50) from 0.11 to 11 mg l(-1)) proved to be more sensitive to the toxic effects of the amine oxide based surfactants than crustacea (IC(50) from 6.8 to 45 mg l(-1)). The effect of organic matter on the solid-phase extraction (SPE) efficiency for pesticides belonging to different chemical groups (urea-derivatives, carbamates and triazines) and having different polarities, was simultaneously studied for the first time in pure and simulated water samples. SPE was carried out in precolumns packed with C18 silica or styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer PLRP-S phases on-line coupled to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Retention factors in water (k'(W)) were estimated for 25 compounds and used for the calculation of the theoretical breakthrough volume (Vb(T)) in pure water. Experimental breakthrough volumes (Vb(E)) were first determined using purified and deionized water as the matrix for selected compounds having Vb(T) < 500 mL; then, the same water with an added humic acid sodium salt (HA) at 0.4-5.6 mg/L of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content, was used as the matrix for compounds having VbE < 500 mL in pure water. Several polar pesticides showed negative linear or logarithmic Vb(E) curves depending on HA content; their recoveries were also determined in environmental samples having low dissolved organic carbon values, between 0.5-6.4 mg/L. A similar behavior was observed for these compounds in simulated and natural water samples, where DOC concentration and the percolated volume (Vp) mainly determine the solute recoveries values. However, the variation of recoveries as a function of DOC content could be negative or null depending on the two examined conditions (Vp lower or larger than Vb(E) in pure water). The routes of five satellite-tracked loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), subjected to an experimental translocation away from their usual migratory routes, have been analysed in relation to the
concurrent oceanographic conditions. Remote sensing data on sea surface temperature and height anomalies, as well as trajectories
of surface drifters were used, to get simultaneous information on the currents encountered by the turtles during their long-range
oceanic movements. Turtles mostly turned out to move in the same direction as the main currents, and their routes were often
influenced by circulation features they encountered. A comparison between turtle ground speeds with that of drifters shows
that in several instances, the turtles did not drift passively with the currents but contributed actively to the overall movement.
Two turtles embarked on an oceanic crossing, probably induced by seasonal changes in surface temperatures, a crossing that

Hormone-mediated maternal effects play an important role in the formation of a differentiated phenotype. They have been shown
to influence a wide array of offspring traits, both early in life and in adulthood. One important offspring trait that is
under the influence of maternal androgens is the immune system. In birds, a growing number of studies show that yolk androgens
modulate immune function during the chick stage. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding long-term effects of prenatal
androgens on offspring immunity. In this study, we therefore investigated the influence of prenatal testosterone (T) on several
measures of immunity in fledgling and adult zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Cell-mediated immune response (towards phytohaemagglutinin, PHA) of fledglings hatching from control eggs was negatively
related to brood size, whereas there was no such association for fledglings hatching from eggs with experimentally elevated
T levels (T fledglings). Male control fledglings showed reduced mass gain compared to female control fledglings within 24 h
after the PHA injection. This pattern was reversed in T fledglings. Total antibody levels in fledglings were not affected
by egg treatment. Neither cell-mediated immunity nor total antibody levels in sexually mature zebra finches were influenced
by egg treatment. However, there was an immuno-enhancing effect of elevated egg T on both primary and secondary humoral immune
responses toward diphtheria and tetanus antigens in ca 5 and 7 month old zebra finches. In addition, the covariation between
different immune components differed between T and control offspring, suggesting that egg treatment may have altered the potential
trade-offs between different parts of the immune system. Our results suggest that prenatal androgens could be an important
