Community and park planners have made improvements to the built environment in order to positively influence health outcomes. An important component of improving the built environment includes engaging community members in the planning process. Yet, attempts to include community members have not always been successful, as the case of Latinos living in the U.S. demonstrates (e.g. Rowel, Sheikhattari, Barber, and Evans-Holland. 2012. “Introduction of a Guide to Enhance Risk Communication among Low-income and Minority Populations: A Grassroots Community Engagement Approach.” Health Promotion Practice 13 (1): 124–132; Schulz 2006). The limited engagement among Latinos has been explained by their low-income and ethnic status, which prioritises employment and family matters, respectively. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to examine community engagement among Latinos of Mexican descent. Specifically, the research objective for the study was to identify the specific strategies and tactics utilised by a grassroots nonprofit organisation to engage Latino residents to advocate for more equitable green space in their neighbourhood. In addressing the research question, the study utilised a case-study approach focused on Chicago’s Little Village neighbourhood. Data were collected via individual interviews and the information was gathered through historical and archival documents, websites, and participant observations during community meetings. Findings revealed that community organizing, democratic leadership, and an anti-racist stance were instrumental in engaging residents.  相似文献

Phylogeography studies add insights into the geographic and evolutionary processes that underline the genetic divergence of populations. This work examines the geographic genetic structure of the Patagonian blennie, Eleginops maclovinus, a notothenioid (Perciformes) endemic to South American temperate and sub-Antarctic waters, using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequences. We found 58 haplotypes in the analysis of 261 individual sequences of 833 base pairs in length. Among-population variance was very low (1.62%) and many haplotypes were shared between several populations across the species geographic range. Genetic differentiation was not consistent with a simple model of isolation by distance, possibly suggesting a lack of equilibrium between gene flow and local genetic drift. The analysis of mismatch distributions, neutrality tests, and the Bayesian Skyline Plot showed a pattern consistent with a recent population expansion event that may have taken place during the Middle Pleistocene.  相似文献

Diet items and habitat constitute some of the environmental resources that may be used differently by individuals within a population. Long-term fidelity by individuals to particular resources exemplifies individual specialization, a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly recognized across a wide range of species. Less is understood about the consequences of such specialization. Here, we investigate the effects of differential foraging ground use on reproductive output in 183 loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nesting at Wassaw Island, Georgia (31.89°N, 80.97°W), between 2004 and 2011 with resulting possible fitness effects. Stable isotope analysis was used to assign the adult female loggerheads to one of three foraging areas in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Our data indicate that foraging area preference influences the size, fecundity, and breeding periodicity of adult female loggerhead turtles. We also found that the proportion of turtles originating from each foraging area varied significantly among the years examined. The change in the number of nesting females across the years of the study was not a result of uniform change from all foraging areas. We develop a novel approach to assess differential contributions of various foraging aggregations to changes in abundance of a sea turtle nesting aggregation using stable isotopes. Our approach can provide an improved understanding of the influences on the causes of increasing or decreasing population trends and allow more effective monitoring for these threatened species and other highly migratory species.  相似文献
