Flow disturbances near tall forest edges are receiving significant attention in diverse disciplines including ecology, forest management, meteorology, and fluid mechanics. Current theories suggest that near a forest edge, when the flow originates from a forest into a large clearing, the flow retains its forest canopy turbulence structure at the exit point. Here, we propose that this framework is not sufficiently general for dense forested edges and suggest that the flow shares several attributes with backward-facing step (BFS) flow. Similar analogies, such as rotor-like circulations, have been proposed by a number of investigators, though the consequences of such circulations on the primary terms in the mean momentum balance at the forest clearing edge have rarely been studied in the field. Using an array of three triaxial sonic anemometers positioned to measure horizontal and vertical gradients of the velocity statistics near a forest edge, we show that the flow structure is more consistent with an intermittent recirculation pattern, rather than a continuous rotor, whose genesis resembles the BFS flow. We also show that the lateral velocity variance, v'2, is the moment that adjusts most slowly with downwind distance as the flow exits from the forest into the clearing. Surprisingly, the longitudinal and vertical velocity variances (u'2 and w'2) at the forest edge were comparable in magnitude to their respective values at the center of a large grass-covered forest clearing, suggesting rapid adjustment at the edge. Discussions on how the forest edge modifies the spectra and co-spectra of momentum fluxes, effective mixing length, and static pressure are also presented.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the lixiviation of metals from different mixtures of fly and bottom ashes that have been stabilized and solidified in clays used in the manufacture of bricks. The ashes used for this study were obtained from a Hoffmann-type brick furnace adapted for the incineration of municipal solid waste during the manufacturing of ceramic bricks. The ashes were stabilized in clay in different proportions of clay:ash mix (99:1, 95:5, 90:10, 80:20 and 60:40). Such mixes were used to manufacture bricks that were calcined at a temperature ranging from 50 to 1100 degrees C. The clay, ashes and manufactured bricks were characterized using X-ray diffraction, fluorescent X-ray, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy. In addition, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure lixiviation tests were performed according to the EPA 1311 method for the determination of heavy metals. The results showed an affinity between clay and ash, and also that the bricks manufactured with these mixtures present low lixiviation levels. The tests also showed the highest decrease in the concentration of arsenic, nickel, chromium, zinc and silver for 99:1 mixtures. The 95:5 mixture was found to be the most favourable for the stabilization (greater concentration decrease) of lead and cadmium. Selenium was the metal with the lowest concentration change whereas arsenic, nickel, chromium, zinc and cadmium showed the greatest concentration change in all mixtures, with the exception of cadmium in the mixture 99:1.  相似文献

Soil pollution with antimony is of increasing environmental concern worldwide. Measures for its control and to attenuate the risks posed to the ecosystem are required. In this study the application of several iron and aluminium oxides and oxyhydroxides as soil amendments was evaluated in order to assess their feasibility to stabilize Sb in mining polluted soils. Mine soils with different pollution levels were amended with either goethite, ferrihydrite or amorphous Al oxide at various ratios (0–10%). The effectiveness of such treatments was assessed by both batch and column leaching tests. The use of ferrihydrite or amorphous Al oxide proved to be highly effective to stabilize Sb. Immobilization levels of 100% were found when doses of 5% ferrihydrite or 10% amorphous Al oxide were applied, regardless of the soil Sb load. Column leaching studies also showed a high Sb leaching reduction (>75%) when soils were amended with 1% ferrihydrite or 5% amorphous Al oxide. Moreover, such treatments proved to simultaneously immobilize As and Pb in a great extent when soils were also polluted with such toxic elements.  相似文献

The manufacture of traditional ceramic products (ceramic tiles, roof tiles, and bricks) is often associated with the emission of F, Cl, and S compounds during the firing stage. According to the literature, fluorine emissions can be reduced by adding CaCO3 to the raw materials mixture used in fabricating these products. However, data available to the authors indicate that this procedure, which has been successfully applied in manufacturing structural ceramics (roof tiles and bricks), is ineffective in ceramic tile manufacture and modifies tile end properties. This paper examines the possibility of reducing such emissions by applying coatings of alkaline-earth carbonates on to the ceramic tile bottom surface to retain the acid compounds emitted during tile firing. The effectiveness of MgCO3, CaCO3, SrCO3, and BaCO3 coatings for retaining these acid emissions was studied, using the evolved gas analysis (EGA) technique with a TG-DSC-FTIR-QM instrument. The SrCO3 coating was found to provide the greatest retention, showing that SO2 and HCl were retained more efficiently than HF. The presence of fluorides, chlorides, and sulphates of Ca, Sr, and Ba was verified in the respective fired coatings, confirming the existence of chemical reactions between the emitted acid compounds and the coating materials at high temperature.  相似文献
