The coastal marine environment of the Northwest Atlantic contains strong environmental gradients that create distinct marine
biogeographic provinces by limiting dispersal, recruitment, and survival. This region has also been subjected to numerous
Pleistocene glacial cycles, resulting in repeated extirpations and recolonizations in northern populations of marine organisms.
In this study, we examined patterns of genetic structure and historical demography in the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, an annual marine fish with high dispersal potential but with well-documented patterns of clinal phenotypic adaptation along
the environmental gradients of the Northwest Atlantic. Contrary to previous studies indicating genetic homogeneity that should
preclude regional adaptation, results demonstrate subtle but significant (F
ST = 0.07; P < 0.0001) genetic structure among three phylogeographic regions that partially correspond with biogeographic provinces, suggesting
regional limits to gene flow. Tests for non-equilibrium population dynamics and latitudinal patterns in genetic diversity
indicate northward population expansion from a single southern refugium following the last glacial maximum, suggesting that
phylogeographic and phenotypic patterns have relatively recent origins. The recovery of phylogeographic structure and the
partial correspondence of these regions to recognized biogeographic provinces suggest that the environmental gradients that
shape biogeographic patterns in the Northwest Atlantic may also limit gene flow in M. menidia, creating phylogeographic structure and contributing to the creation of latitudinal phenotypic clines in this species. 相似文献

Marine plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Although there has been a surge in global investment for implementing interventions to mitigate plastic pollution, there has been little attention given to the cost of these interventions. We developed a decision support framework to identify the economic, social, and ecological costs and benefits of plastic pollution interventions for different sectors and stakeholders. We calculated net cost as a function of six cost and benefit categories with the following equation: cost of implementing an intervention (direct, indirect, and nonmonetary costs) minus recovered costs and benefits (monetary and nonmonetary) produced by the interventions. We applied our framework to two quantitative case studies (a solid waste management plan and a trash interceptor) and four comparative case studies, evaluating the costs of beach cleanups and waste-to-energy plants in various contexts, to identify factors that influence the costs of plastic pollution interventions. The socioeconomic context of implementation, the spatial scale of implementation, and the time scale of evaluation all influence costs and the distribution of costs across stakeholders. Our framework provides an approach to estimate and compare the costs of a range of interventions across sociopolitical and economic contexts. 相似文献

We examined the relationship between maternal care and ant-tending in the treehopper species, Publilia modesta. Ant-tending increased the number of nymphs surviving to adulthood by approximately fivefold. Maternal care increased the number of nymphs surviving to adulthood by approximately 50% in the presence of ants. Maternal care had either no effect or the opposite effect in the absence of ants; when ants were not present survivorship was 30% lower in the presence of mothers. Maternal care increased the average number of ants tending nymph aggregations approximately threefold early in the summer; consequently, we suggest that the primary benefit of maternal care is to attract ants while nymphs are small and few in number. Because there was no benefit of maternal care in the absence of ants, we conclude that ant-tending provides an ecological context that favors maternal care in this treehopper species. 相似文献

Marine reserves can help in maintaining biodiversity and potentially be useful as a fishery management tool by removing human-mediated impacts. Intertidal, soft-sediment habitats can often support robust recreational and commercial shellfish harvests, especially for clams; however, there is limited research on the effects of reserves in these habitats. In San Juan County, Washington, several reserves prohibit recreational clam digging. We examined the effects of these reserves on infaunal community composition through comparison with non-reserve beaches during a 6-week period. Clam abundance, overall species richness and total polychaete family richness were greater on reserve beaches compared to non-reserve beaches. Additionally, an experiment within a reserve demonstrated negative impacts of digging on non-target infauna. These effects probably resulted from local disruption and disturbance of the sediment habitat and not from increased post-digging predation, which was controlled. ABSTRACT: A series of reforms in the water industry in Australia has created a demand from the industry and regulators for objective methodologies to evaluate incremental changes in the customer service standards. In this paper, the use of choice modeling for estimating implicit prices associated with urban water supply attributes is explored. Results from multinomial logit (MNL) and random parameters logit (RPL) models show that increases in annual water bills and the frequency of future interruptions were the most important attributes. Implicit price confidence intervals based on the best models suggest that people are willing to pay positive amounts to achieve a water supply that is less frequently interrupted. The provision of alternative water supplies during an interruption and notification of the interruption were found to be unimportant to respondents. Choice modeling proved to be a useful technique and provided the industry and regulators with additional information for standard setting. 相似文献

Almost 2000 cheilostomatid–cheilostomatid (bryozoan) interactions were recorded from 110 rocks from intertidal and infralittoral
zone locations at Kodiac Island in the Alaskan Boreal–Arctic. Intraspecific interactions were unusually rare; this may have
resulted from inhibition of con-specific settlement by adult colonies. In one species, rank did vary as a function of depth.
The proportion of determinate-species encounter-pairings (a pairing in which one competitor/species wins all encounters) and
tied outcomes (whereby neither competitor/species wins or loses but are involved in a “standoff” or mutual overgrowth) increased
from the upper midlittoral to the lower infralittoral. The assemblage of bryozoans formed a clear hierarchy, with a score
of 0.83 on Tanaka and Nandakumar's transitivity index. Overgrowth dominants did not monopolise the assemblage. The most abundant
species were mid- or lower-ranked competitors. The identity of the competitive species had a major influence on the outcome
of encounters. Zooidal height and colony growth morphology were important factors determining overall overgrowth rank. The
greatest number of interaction types was recorded on medium-sized (surface area >300 and <600 cm2) rocks, and the overall diversity of intertidal species was very high compared with studies conducted elsewhere. The high
interaction and species diversity recorded may both have resulted from intermediate levels of disturbance.

Since the appearance of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in the late 1980s, the virus has become endemic throughout the world, with only the countries of Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand historically free of PRRS virus. Biosecurity is maintained largely through restrictions on the importation of pigs and semen. The risk for a PRRSV outbreak via the legal importation of fresh/chilled/frozen pork from PRRSV-positive countries remains controversial. However, examination of the historical record shows that countries retained a PRRSV-negative status during the importation of more than 500,000 tons of fresh/chilled/frozen pork from PRRSV-positive trading partners. This review describes some of the unique properties of PRRSV, including the poor stability of the virus in the environment, the low probability for airborne transmission, and the inability to sustain infections in feral swine, which make PRRSV a poor candidate for disease introduction through the legal importation of pork. 相似文献
