The photocatalytic inactivation (PCI) of Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive) was performed using polyoxometalate (POM) as a homogeneous photocatalyst and compared with that of heterogeneous TiO2 photocatalyst. Aqueous suspensions of the microorganisms (107–108 cfu ml−1) and POM (or TiO2) were irradiated with black light lamps. The POM-PCI was faster than (or comparable to) TiO2-PCI under the experimental conditions employed in this study. The relative efficiency of POM-PCI was species-dependent. Among three POMs (H3PW12O40, H3PMo12O40, and H4SiW12O40) tested in this study, the inactivation of E. coli was fastest with H4SiW12O40 while that of B. subtilis was the most efficient with H3PW12O40. Although the biocidal action of TiO2 photocatalyst has been commonly ascribed to the role of photogenerated reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxides, the cell death mechanism with POM seems to be different from TiO2-PCI. While TiO2 caused the cell membrane disruption, POM did not induce the cell lysis. When methanol was added to the POM solution, not only the PCI of E. coli was enhanced (contrary to the case of TiO2-PCI) but also the dark inactivation was observed. This was ascribed to the in situ production of formaldehyde from the oxidation of methanol. The interesting biocidal property of POM photocatalyst might be utilized as a potential disinfectant technology.  相似文献

This paper examines how air pollution control policies will affect the welfare of the different races in Southern California. The paper adopts the concept of the Net Welfare Impact (NWI) function to measure how air quality improvements affect the welfare (monetary and non-monetary) of individual households. The core finding is that many of the benefits of air quality improvement are enjoyed by minorities, especially Latinos (and African-Americans and Asians to a lesser extent), whose household incomes tend to be lower and family size larger than the regional average, and who are more likely to live in the neighbourhoods that are currently polluted. Thus, because minorities have suffered more from dirty air, they are the major beneficiaries from implementation of clean air policies. This is the result of the Federal clean air mandate that dictates uniform standards for all metropolitan areas.  相似文献

Two semicontinuous elemental and organic carbon analyzers along with daily integrated samplers, which were used for laboratory elemental and organic carbon analysis, were operated to measure PM2.5 organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) for the entire year of 2002 at the St. Louis Midwest Supersite. The annual-average denuded OC and EC concentrations were 3.88 and 0.7 microg/m3, respectively. A comparison of the 24-hr average denuded and undenuded OC measurements showed a positive bias for the undenuded OC measurement that was best represented by a positive intercept of 0.34 +/- 0.1 microg/m3 and a slope of 1.06 +/- 0.02, with an R2 of 0.91. The full year of daily EC and OC measurements was used to demonstrate that a one-in-six-day sampling strategy at this site accurately represents the annual average concentrations. Although fine particle OC concentrations did not correlate with day of the week, EC concentrations showed a significant weekly pattern, with the highest concentration during the middle of the workweek and the lowest concentration on Sundays. Hourly EC and OC measurements yielded average diurnal patterns for the EC to OC ratio that peaked during morning rush hour traffic on weekdays but not on weekends.  相似文献

This study analyzed the concentrations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) in maternal and umbilical cord sera at delivery from the general population in Korea. Seventy samples were analyzed with ion-pairing and LC/MS/MS. PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS were detected in both maternal and umbilical cord sera. There was a high correlation of PFC concentrations between maternal and cord serum samples, implying transplacental transport. Ranking of transplacental transfer efficiency was PFOA > PFHxS > PFOS. Student’s t-tests revealed that concentrations of maternal PFOA were related with decreases in birth weight, birth length and ponderal index, suggesting a possible impact on fetal growth. With multiple logistic regression models, maternal PFOS concentration showed a significant inverse association with ponderal index (OR = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.05–0.90). Umbilical cord PFHxS concentration showed a significant inverse association with birth weight (OR = 0.26; 95% CI, 0.08–0.85) or a marginally significant inverse association with birth length (OR = 0.33; 95% CI, 0.09–1.17). This is the first report demonstrating an inverse association of birth outcomes with PFHxS exposure. Concentrations of maternal PFOA were decreased with parity, implying that delivery is one of the major routes for PFOA elimination in women. This study demonstrated prenatal exposure of PFCs through placental transfer which could result in possible developmental effects in the population sampled. Our results may provide data basis to conduct a larger scale investigation into developmental effects of PFCs in the future and contribute to understanding levels of PFC contaminations from a variety of populations in the globe.  相似文献

Multi-year hourly measurements of PM2.5 elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) from a site in the South Bronx, New York were used to examine diurnal, day of week and seasonal patterns. The hourly carbon measurements also provided temporally resolved information on sporadic EC spikes observed predominantly in winter. Furthermore, hourly EC and OC data were used to provide information on secondary organic aerosol formation. Average monthly EC concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 μg m?3 with peak hourly values of several μg m?3 typically observed from November to March. Mean EC concentrations were lower on weekends (approximately 27% lower on Saturday and 38% lower on Sunday) than on weekdays (Monday to Friday). The weekday/weekend difference was more pronounced during summer months and less noticeable during winter. Throughout the year EC exhibited a similar diurnal pattern to NOx showing a pronounced peak during the morning commute period (7–10 AM EST). These patterns suggest that EC was impacted by local mobile emissions and in addition by emissions from space heating sources during winter months. Although EC was highly correlated with black carbon (BC) there was a pronounced seasonal BC/EC gradient with summer BC concentrations approximately a factor of 2 higher than EC. Average monthly OC concentrations ranged from 1.0 to 4.1 μg m?3 with maximum hourly concentrations of 7–11 μg m?3 predominantly in summer or winter months. OC concentrations generally correlated with PM2.5 total mass and aerosol sulfate and with NOx during winter months. OC showed no particular day of week pattern. The OC diurnal pattern was typically different than EC except in winter when OC tracked EC and NOx indicating local primary emissions contributed significantly to OC during winter at the urban location. On average secondary organic aerosol was estimated to account for 40–50% of OC during winter and up to 63–73% during summer months.  相似文献

Commercial activated carbon is a highly effective absorbent that can be used to remove micropollutants from water. As a result, the demand for activated carbon is increasing. In this study, we investigated the optimum manufacturing conditions for producing activated carbon from ligneous wastes generated from food processing. Jujube seeds and walnut shells were selected as raw materials. Carbonization and steam activation were performed in a fixed-bed laboratory electric furnace. To obtain the highest iodine number, the optimum conditions for producing activated carbon from jujube seeds and walnut shells were 2 hr and 1.5 hr (carbonization at 700°C) followed by 1 hr and 0.5 hr (activation at 1000°C), respectively. The surface area and iodine number of activated carbon made from jujube seeds and walnut shells were 1,477 and 1,184 m2/g and 1,450 and 1,200 mg/g, respectively. A pore-distribution analysis revealed that most pores had a pore diameter within or around 30–40 Å, and adsorption capacity for surfactants was about 2 times larger than the commercial activated carbon, indicating that waste-based activated carbon can be used as alternative.

Implications:Wastes discharged from agricultural and food industries results in a serious environmental problem. A method is proposed to convert food-processing wastes such as jujube seeds and walnut shells into high-grade granular activated carbon. Especially, the performance of jujube seeds as activated carbon is worthy of close attention. There is little research about the application of jujube seeds. Also, when compared to two commercial carbons (Samchully and Calgon samples), the results show that it is possible to produce high-quality carbon, particularly from jujube seed, using a one-stage, 1,000°C, steam pyrolysis. The preparation of activated carbon from food-processing wastes could increase economic return and reduce pollution.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to explore the reductive bioremediation potential of a perchlorate-enriched facultative anaerobic consortium. Rapid perchlorate reduction and bacterial growth were observed up to 1.84 g l(-1) of perchlorate, but not at 3.82 g l(-1) due to the toxicity. The specific growth rate of the mixed consortium was 0.1 h(-1). The consortium co-reduced perchlorate and nitrate with acetate as e- donor and carbon source. The presence of nitrate slowed down the perchlorate reduction rate. The other e- acceptors utilized include oxygen, chlorate, Cr(VI), and selenate. Over 95% of the 16 mg l(-1) of added Cr(VI) was reduced within 24 h of incubation with a high-density perchlorate-grown consortium. However, the consortium failed to couple growth with reduction of nitrite, sulfate, thiosulfate, and sulfite. During the search for autotrophic perchlorate reduction, many consortia from very diverse natural sources could not use sulfur compounds such as thiosulfate as e- donor.  相似文献

In this research, a risk assessment was undertaken in order to develop the remediation and management strategy of a contaminated gunnery site, where a nearby flood controlling reservoir is under construction. Six chemicals, including explosives and heavy metals, posing potential risk to environmental and human health, were targeted in this study. A site-specific conceptual site model was constructed, based on effective, reasonable exposure pathways, to avoid any overestimation of the risk. Also, conservative default values were adapted to prevent underestimation of the risk when site-specific values were not available. The risks posed by the six contaminants were calculated using the API’s Decision Support System for Exposure and Risk Assessment, with several assumptions. In the crater-formed-area (Ac), the non-carcinogenic risks (i.e., HI values) of tri-nitro-toluene (TNT) and Cd were slightly larger than 1, but for RDX (Royal Demolition Explosives) was over 50. The total non-carcinogenic risk of the whole gunnery range was calculated to be 62.5, which was a significantly high value. The carcinogenicity of Cd was estimated to be about 10−3, while that for Pb was about 5 × 10−4, which greatly exceeded the generally acceptable carcinogenic risk level of 10−4–10−6. It was concluded from the risk assessment that there is an immediate need for remediation of both carcinogens and non-carcinogens before construction of the reservoir. However, for a more accurate risk assessment, further specific estimations of the changes in environmental conditions due to the construction of the reservoir will be required; and more over, the effects of the pollutants to the ecosystem will also need to be evaluated.  相似文献
