Fecal deposits by grazing animals on pasturelands have the potential to leach nutrients to runoff during rainfall events. Unlike croplands, grazing systems such as pasturelands or rangelands have little opportunity to ameliorate nutrient runoff through in-field or edge-of-field management practices. Thus, we investigated the amounts and concentrations of nutrients in overland flow from simulated grazing lands. Two grazing management scenarios were simulated: continuous grazing represented by two sparsely vegetated (SV) plots and rotational grazing represented by two densely vegetated (DV) plots. In addition, there were two control plots. The plots were treated with standard cowpats and rainfall was simulated until overland flow at the edge of the plots reached steady-state. Higher runoff was observed from DV plots (9.97 mm) than SV plots (7.05 mm), but the average total suspended solids concentration in runoff from SV plots was approximately 17 times the concentration observed in runoff from the DV plots. The average total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were highest in plots simulating continuous grazing (5.91 mg L(-1)). In both DV and SV plots at least 83% of the TP was found to be in the dissolved form. The average total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN) and total nitrogen concentrations observed in runoff samples from SV plots were 1.25 and 1.46 mg L(-1), respectively. Organic nitrogen comprised 95% of the TKN observed in runoff samples from SV plots. The SV plots have relatively higher loads for those nutrients in the particle associated form compared to DV plots, whereas DV plots had higher loads for those nutrients in the dissolved form. Grazing lands without any additional manure applications were found to release nutrients in high levels and vegetation did not show any effect on removing dissolved nutrients from runoff. These results are useful to inform selection of appropriate management practices to reduce nutrient transport to surface waters in watersheds dominated by grazed lands.  相似文献

Communities along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, USA such as Port Richmond, are subject to traffic associated with goods movement to and from port facilities and local industry. Air pollution associated with this traffic poses an environmental health concern in this and other urban areas. Our study measures black carbon (BC) in Port Richmond and examines its relationship to expected sources such as truck traffic. We used a participatory sampling method to conduct 1-min measurements over 8-hour periods at 14 homes, a school and park, during a 4-week period in June 2012. Measurements over 9 sampling days had a 30-min average BC concentration of 1.2 μg m?3, and a maximum of 12 μg m?3. Statistical analyses showed some effect of traffic, but greater association between BC concentrations and weather and time of day. BC concentrations varied more by location than by day, and distance to traffic arterials and interstate freeway was a predictor of this variance. While our dataset is limited by number and variety of observations, major findings indicate that BC concentration varies more by location than by day, there is a decrease in median BC concentration with increased distance from an interstate highway, and an expected effect of diesel traffic on average daily BC concentrations. Our findings are an important step towards understanding patterns and determinants of BC concentration in communities colocated with major ports. Our study also demonstrates that participatory methods in air pollution monitoring can help increase awareness of local air pollution levels.  相似文献

Abstract: This study examines the effects of the short-lived insecticide carbaryl, a neurotoxin, on amphibian communities experiencing natural stresses of competition and predation. Tadpoles of three species (  Woodhouse's toad [ Bufo woodhousii ], gray treefrog [ Hyla versicolor ], and green frog [ Rana clamitans ]), representing a commonly encountered assemblage in Missouri, were reared in outdoor polyethylene pond mesocosms. We determined the effects of initial tadpole density ( low or high), predation (newts [  Notophthalmus viridescens ] absent or present), chemical exposure (0, 3.5, or 7.0 mg /L carbaryl), and their interactions on body mass, larval period, and survival to metamorphosis. Green frogs in high-density ponds did not reach metamorphosis, but metamorphs in low-density ponds and tadpoles in high-density ponds were not significantly affected by treatments or their interaction. Carbaryl reduced survival to metamorphosis in toads and treefrogs and increased mass at metamorphosis in treefrogs. Effects of carbaryl varied with predator environment and initial larval density. Interactions of carbaryl with predator and with density may result in an indirect effect of carbaryl causing increased food resources through the elimination of zooplankton populations that may compete for similar resources. Our results indicate that differences in biotic conditions influenced the potency of carbaryl and that even low concentrations induce changes that may alter community dynamics in ways not predicted from single-factor, laboratory-based studies.  相似文献

Physical changes that occur on the surface of fired shots due to firing and impact with soil may increase the dissolution of muniton metals. Increased metal dissolution could potentially increase metal transport and leaching, affecting metal concentrations in surface and groundwater. This research describes the relationship between the surface changes on fired tungsten-nickel-iron (94% W:2% Ni:4% Fe) composite shots and metals leaching from those shots. Tungsten composite shot was fired into, and aged in, three soil types (Silty Sand, Sandy Clay, and Silt) in mesoscale rainfall lysimeters to simulate live-fire conditions and subsequent interactions between the metals of the composite and soil. Leachate, runoff, and soil samples were collected from the lysimeters and analyzed for metal content. The shots were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate surface changes. SEM results indicated that a soil’s particle size distribution initially affected the amount of metal that was sheared from the surface of the fired W-composite shots. Shearing was greatest in soils with larger soil particles (sand and gravel); shearing was least in soils composed of small soil particles (fines). Increased metallic shearing from the shot’s surface was associated with increased W dissolution, compared to controls, following a simulated 1 year soil aging.  相似文献

Two surface soils contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) collected from Superfund sites in the New England region of the United States, Fletcher Paints and Merrimack Industrial Metals, were evaluated for field treatment at the bench level using catalyzed H2O2 propagations (CHP—modified Fenton’s reagent). The two soils were first evaluated for the potential for in situ treatment based on two criteria: (1) temperature (<40 °C after CHP reagent addition), and (2) hydrogen peroxide longevity (>24 h). In situ CHP remediation was more applicable to the Fletcher soil, while the Merrimack soil was better suited to ex situ treatment based on temperature increases and hydrogen peroxide lifetimes. Using the highest hydrogen peroxide concentrations appropriate for in situ treatment in each soil, PCB destruction was 94% in the Fletcher soil but only 48% in the Merrimack soil. However, 98% PCB destruction was achieved in the Merrimack soil using conditions more applicable to ex situ treatment (higher hydrogen peroxide concentrations with temperatures >40 °C). Analysis of degradation products by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy showed no detectable chlorinated degradation products, suggesting that the products of PCB oxidation were rapidly dechlorinated and degraded. The results of this research document that the two PCB-contaminated soils studied can be effectively treated using aggressive CHP conditions, and that such a detailed bench study provides important information before implementing field treatment.  相似文献

Abstract: Nonpoint source pollution (NPS) studies, such as total maximum daily loads development, often require quantification of flow in small first‐order and second‐order streams. Frequently, stream‐gaging techniques are implemented in flows that are below the manufacturer’s recommended minimum velocity. A comparative analysis of the accuracy of current technologies used in NPS pollution stream‐gaging applications and their applicability in low‐flow conditions was conducted. Nine stream‐gaging methods were evaluated for their field and laboratory performance and control structures were used as the statistical control. Analysis of the field investigation data indicated that Marsh McBirney current meter and the One‐orange method were the most accurate in the field while the results of the laboratory experiments found that the Starflow acoustic Doppler and Valeport Braystoke current meter performed best among the 10 methods. Overall, the Marsh McBirney and Valeport Braystoke current meters exhibited the best performance for both field and laboratory situations.  相似文献

Simple high-throughput procedures were developed for the direct analysis of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in human and bovine milk and human urine matrices. Samples were extracted with an acidified aqueous solution on a high-speed shaker. Stable isotope labeled internal standards were added with the extraction solvent to ensure accurate tracking and quantitation. An additional cleanup procedure using partitioning with methylene chloride was required for milk matrices to minimize the presence of matrix components that can impact the longevity of the analytical column. Both analytes were analyzed directly, without derivatization, by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry using two separate precursor-to-product transitions that ensure and confirm the accuracy of the measured results. Method performance was evaluated during validation through a series of assessments that included linearity, accuracy, precision, selectivity, ionization effects and carryover. Limits of quantitation (LOQ) were determined to be 0.1 and 10 µg/L (ppb) for urine and milk, respectively, for both glyphosate and AMPA. Mean recoveries for all matrices were within 89–107% at three separate fortification levels including the LOQ. Precision for replicates was ≤7.4% relative standard deviation (RSD) for milk and ≤11.4% RSD for urine across all fortification levels. All human and bovine milk samples used for selectivity and ionization effects assessments were free of any detectable levels of glyphosate and AMPA. Some of the human urine samples contained trace levels of glyphosate and AMPA, which were background subtracted for accuracy assessments. Ionization effects testing showed no significant biases from the matrix. A successful independent external validation was conducted using the more complicated milk matrices to demonstrate method transferability.  相似文献

Development policy increasingly focuses on building capacities to respond to change (adaptation), and to drive change (innovation). Few studies, however, focus specifically on the social and gender differentiation of capacities to adapt and innovate. We address this gap using a qualitative study in three communities in Solomon Islands; a developing country, where rural livelihoods and well-being are tightly tied to agriculture and fisheries. We find the five dimensions of capacity to adapt and to innovate (i.e. assets, flexibility, learning, social organisation, agency) to be mutually dependant. For example, limits to education, physical mobility and agency meant that women and youth, particularly, felt it was difficult to establish relations with external agencies to access technical support or new information important for innovating or adapting. Willingness to bear risk and to challenge social norms hindered both women’s and men’s capacity to innovate, albeit to differing degrees. Our findings are of value to those aspiring for equitable improvements to well-being within dynamic and diverse social–ecological systems.  相似文献

This study was conducted to derive receptor-specific outdoor exposure concentrations of total suspended particulate (TSP) and respirable (dae ≤ 10 µm) air manganese (air-Mn) for East Liverpool and Marietta (Ohio) in the absence of facility emissions data, but where long-term air measurements were available. Our “site-surface area emissions method” used U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) AERMOD (AMS/EPA Regulatory Model) dispersion model and air measurement data to estimate concentrations for residential receptor sites in the two communities. Modeled concentrations were used to create ratios between receptor points and calibrated using measured data from local air monitoring stations. Estimated outdoor air-Mn concentrations were derived for individual study subjects in both towns. The mean estimated long-term air-Mn exposure levels for total suspended particulate were 0.35 μg/m3 (geometric mean [GM]) and 0.88 μg/m3 (arithmetic mean [AM]) in East Liverpool (range: 0.014–6.32 μg/m3) and 0.17 μg/m3 (GM) and 0.21 μg/m3 (AM) in Marietta (range: 0.03–1.61 μg/m3). Modeled results compared well with averaged ambient air measurements from local air monitoring stations. Exposure to respirable Mn particulate matter (PM10; PM <10 μm) was higher in Marietta residents.

Implications: Few available studies evaluate long-term health outcomes from inhalational manganese (Mn) exposure in residential populations, due in part to challenges in measuring individual exposures. Local long-term air measurements provide the means to calibrate models used in estimating long-term exposures. Furthermore, this combination of modeling and ambient air sampling can be used to derive receptor-specific exposure estimates even in the absence of source emissions data for use in human health outcome studies.  相似文献
