The Earth’s greatest living space is found in the bathypelagic zone of the oceans (depths >1,000 m), yet little research has
been dedicated to these ecosystems. The micronekton of the bathypelagic zone in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (EGOM) was investigated
with the goal of comparing its community structure with that of the well-studied mesopelagic micronekton. Herein is described
a portion of that community, specifically species belonging to the orders Lophogastrida, Mysida, and Decapoda. A total of
46 species were collected, most of which have broad zoogeographic distributions. Seventeen of the species had not previously
been collected above 1,000 m in the same location despite over 20 years of sampling. Compared to the mesopelagic zone, the
bathypelagic community showed increased contributions to abundance and estimated biomass from the Oplophoridae and Eucopiidae,
with a simultaneous decrease in the importance of the Dendrobranchiata. In addition, the bathypelagic zone was distinguished
by a relatively high percentage of individuals that brood their eggs (77% vs. 15% in the mesopelagic zone). The results are
interpreted as evidence that the bathypelagic zone contains a distinct pelagic community, with a biology and ecology fundamentally

Communal breeding through nest-sharing may benefit cooperating individuals indirectly, in increased inclusive fitness, or directly, when environmental constraints reduce the fitness of solitary breeders. Burying beetles provide extensive parental care and can breed either in pairs or in larger groups of unrelated males and females. Parentage of communally-reared broods is usually shared but is skewed in favor of the individuals of each sex that provide longer care. Females provide care longer than males, and two females are more likely to remain together in the brood chamber than two males are. Flies and other burying beetles are the major competitors for carcasses and this study suggests that it is competition with flies that promotes communal breeding inNicrophorus tomentosus On medium-size carcasses (35–40 g) the presence or absence of oviposition by flies had a significant effect on the size of the brood reared, and on large carcasses (55–60 g) the number of beetles present, two or four, had a significant effect on brood size. On both medium and large carcasses, pairs rearing broods on flyblown carcasses had fewer young than pairs on clean carcasses or foursomes on flyblown carcasses. There was a strong trend for an interaction effect between number of beetles and competition with flies (Table 1). Duration of parental care was not affected by competition with flies except for that of the first male to depart, which provided care longer on flyblown carcasses (Table 2). The final clean-up of residential lead abatement projects in federally-supported housing, as well as in other housing in a number of states, must meet surface dust lead clearance levels expressed as g of lead per square foot. These clearance levels were established because hand-to-mouth ingestion of lead-contaminated dust is recognised as a major pathway through which many children are exposed. A dilemma exists because many floors in housing undergoing abatement are carpeted and the established clearance levels are generally not recommended for use on carpets. These clearance levels are also used as 'action levels' to determine whether exposure reduction activities are needed. The US Environmental Protection Agency is currently in the process of issuing standards for hazardous levels of lead in interior dust and bare soil under Title X of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1992, The Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act of 1992. An effort to develop a potential surface dust lead clearance level for carpets was made using an existing vacuum dust collection method that has previously been shown to be a reliable indicator of childhood lead exposure. This method was designed for use on carpeted and non-carpeted surfaces. Using data from the Cincinnati Soil Lead Abatement Demonstration Project, the suggested floor-dust lead level where an estimated 95% of the population of children would be expected to have blood lead values below the national goal of 10 g dL–1, was more than an order of magnitude lower than the current floor-dust lead clearance level of 1080 g m–2 (100 g ft–2). Further comparisons of blood lead and carpet lead levels in other parts of the country should be performed before a risk-based lead loading clearance level is established. 相似文献

African wild dogs ( Lycaon pictus ) are endangered largely because their population-density is low under all conditions. Interspecific competition with larger carnivores may be a factor limiting wild dog density. The density of wild dogs on a 2600-km2 area of the Selous Game Reserve (Tanzania) was 0.04 adults/km2 . Spotted hyaena ( Crocuta crocuta ) density for the same area was estimated by audio playbacks as 0.32 hyaenas/km2 . Lion ( Panthera leo ) density, determined from the ratio of hyaenas to lions, was 0.11 lions/km2 . Across six ecosystems including Selous, there were strong negative correlations between wild dog and hyaena densities (r = −0.92; p = 0.01) and between wild dog and lion densities (r = −0.91; p = 0.03). Hyaenas out-numbered wild dogs by ratios ranging from 8:1 to 122:1. Ratios of lions to wild dogs ranged from 3:1 to 21:1. The diets of hyaenas and wild dogs overlap extensively; those of wild dogs and lions show less overlap. Where hyaenas are common and visibility is good, interference competition from hyaenas at wild dog kills is common and reduces wild dogs' feeding time. Where hyaena density is lower and visibility is poor, interference competition at wild dog kills is rare. Wild dogs are commonly killed by lions and occasionally by hyaenas. These data suggest that competition with spotted hyaenas may limit or exclude wild dogs when hyaena density is high. Competition with lions appears less intense, but direct predation by lions on wild dogs is important. Competition and predation by larger carnivores may be of broad importance to the conservation of wild dogs and other medium-sized carnivores. 相似文献

Simulation of the Effect of Spatial and Temporal Variation in Fire Regimes on the Population Viability of a Banksia Species 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Populations of plants that rely on seeds for recovery from disturbance by fire (obligate seeders) are sensitive to regimes of frequent fire. Obligate seeders are prominent in fire-prone heathlands of southern Australia and South Africa. Population extinction may occur if there are successive fires during a plant's juvenile period. Research on the population biology of obligate seeders has influenced the management of fire in these heath and shrublands, but work on the effects of the spatial variability of fires is lacking. We hypothesize that extinction maybe avoided under an adverse fire frequency if fires are patchy. We present a model that simulates the effects of spatial and temporal variations in fire regimes on the viability of a plant population in a grid landscape. Seedling establishment, maturation, senescence, and seed dispersal determine the presence or absence of plants in each cell. We used values typical of serotinous Banksia species to estimate probability of extinction in relation to fire frequency and size. We examined the sensitivity of predictions to dispersal, senescence, fire frequency, spatial burning pattern and size variance, and the size of the grid. Simulations 200 years in length indicated that extinction probability was lowest when mean fire frequency was intermediate and mean fire size was large. When fire frequency was high, extinction probability was high irrespective of fire size. Senescence was more important than high-frequency fire as a cause of extinction in cells. Interactions between dispersal, fire frequency, and size were complex, indicating that extinction is governed by intercell connectivity. The model indicates that fire patchiness cannot be assumed to ensure avoidance of extinction of populations. Conservation of populations is most likely when fire patchiness is relatively low—when the size of fires is moderate to large and when burned patches are contiguous. 相似文献

Summary Mother-calf whistle exchanges were recorded from temporarily captured free-ranging bottlenose dolphins from 1975 to 1989. This is part of a long-term research project studying social structure and behavior of a community of approximately 100 dolphins in waters near Sarasota, Florida. Analysis of whistle exchanges from 12 mothercalf pairs shows that signature whistles can remain stable for periods up to at least 12 years. We looked for effects of vocal learning on the development of the signature whistle by comparing whistles of calves to those of their mothers. Eight female calves produced whistles distinct from those of their mothers, while four male calves produced whistles similar to those of their mothers. Male calves appeared to produce a greater proportion of whistles other than the signature whistle (termed variants). We hypothesize that these sex differences in whistle vocalizations may reflect differences in the roles males and females play in the social structure of the community. 相似文献

Summary A new method to mark sperm transfer events between birds, using microspheres inserted into males' cloacae, was employed to assess the frequency of extra-pair copulation (EPC) in a population of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) in Ontario, Canada, during the summer of 1988. We inserted 25 males with microspheres; spheres from 8 (32%) of these males were found in extra-pair females, from which we infer that males pursue a mixed reproductive strategy of monogamy coupled with seeking EPCs. The cloacae of 10 of 41 (24.4%) females were found to contain microspheres from non-mates. EPCs occur more frequently between neighboring birds than between non-neighbors. Only two within-pair copulations were detected with this method, suggesting that it underestimates the occurrence of all copulations, extra-pair or within-pair. Copulation watches revealed that within-pair copulations occur very frequently. We propose that frequent pair copulations are used by males to ensure their paternity in their mate's offspring.

However, Marin (Firm incentives to promote technological change in pollution control: Comment, J. Environ. Econom. Management, 21, 297–300 (1991)) argues that we overstated the efficacy of auctioned permits: that we used an unrealistic assumption which might affect our findings; that auctions may misallocate permits and are administratively burdensome; and that innovation detection is difficult under this regime.
