Foramina parietalia permagna (FPP) is an extremely uncommon congenital defect, inherited as an autosomal dominant condition. Its characteristics are two symmetrical orifices in the parietal bones (not of fixed size) on both sides of the midline. This defect does not affect either the psychic or the physical development of the affected person. This paper describes the sonographic appearance of FPP in utero as an enlargement of the posterior fontanelle.  相似文献

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) were generated in bench-scale chlorination experiments using treated waters (prior to final chlorination) of the three major drinking water utilities of the Quebec City area. The purpose was to investigate the formation and occurrence of these chlorination by-products (CBPs) on a seasonal basis. Data for HAAs, THMs and other physico-chemical parameters were produced through a six-month sampling program with variable conditions of water quality, water temperature, applied chlorine dose and reaction time. In waters from the three utilities, chloroform (THM specie), dichloroacetic and trichloroacetic acid (HAA species) were the most prevalent compounds due to the low concentrations of bromide in the utilities' raw waters. Significant differences in CBP occurrence were noted between the three utilities' chlorinated waters, mainly due to the type of disinfectant applied to raw water. The use of pre-ozonation, as opposed to pre-chlorination (or direct chlorination) in one of the utilities appears to be the major factor contributing to that utility's potential for compliance with current THM and future HAA standards. Seasonal variations in THMs and HAAs were mainly associated with variations in organic precursors and to changes in water temperature (two parameters which vary widely on a seasonal basis in surface waters of southern Quebec), with CBP occurrence at its highest in spring. Statistical correlations between HAAs and THMs were moderate and only temperature appeared to affect the preponderance of one CBP or the other. Finally, a regression analysis was carried out aimed at associating each CBP to water quality and the experimental parameters. Thanks to their predictive ability, multivariate models seem to be the tools with the best potential for decision-making purposes.  相似文献

The main purpose of this research is to show the usefulness of the 230Th/232Th activity ratios as a chronological marker that can be helpful in the dating of sediment cores collected from an estuarine system located in the south west of Spain highly polluted by wastes from fertilizer plants. These wastes, being released for 30 years, and enriched in radionuclides from the uranium series including 210Pb, invalidate the application of the 210Pb dating technique in full extent to the sediment cores collected in this estuary. However, the evaluation and the interpretation of both 210Pb and 230Th/232Th profiles allows the determination of average sedimentation rates in different parts of the cores, contaminated and noncontaminated zone, that agree in the case analysed in this research. Through this approach, a confident chronology covering the last century, which is essential to analyse and reconstruct the historical evolution of other pollutants in this heavily contaminated system can be established.  相似文献

The growth, survival, digestive enzyme activity and biochemical composition ofPenaeus japonicus (Bate) larvae and postlarvae were measured under three feeding regimes. Larvae were reared through the protozoeal stages usingChaetoceros gracilis. From the first mysis stage, three feeding regimes were used; (A)C. gracilis plusArtemia sp. nauplii, (B)Artemia sp. nauplii alone or (C)C. gracilis alone. No significant difference was found in growth, survival, protein content or lipid content of postlarvae from the treatments receiving the single-feed type, despite the low protein (7%) and highly unsaturated fatty acid content of the alga. Growth of larvae receiving the mixed diet was significantly higher than in the other treatments. Trypsin activity was more strongly influenced than amylase activity by dietary treatment, and differences in the ratio of these enzymes between treatments suggest independent control of their secretion. Trypsin activity recorded in larvae feeding onC. gracilis was up to six time higher than in larvae feeding onArtemia sp. nauplii, apparently in response to the low protein content of the alga. Larvae receiving the mixed diet exhibited an intermediate level of trypsin activity; it is suggested that the ingestion of algae is necessary for optimal assimilation of the zooplankton component of the diet.  相似文献

Although our understanding of environmental risk assessment in temporary wetlands has been improved by the use of multi-species toxicity testing, we still know little of how landscape variables mediate the strength of, and recovery from, anthropogenic stress in such ecosystems. To bridge this research gap, we provide a theoretical framework of the response of temporary wetlands to anthropogenic disturbance along a habitat-isolation continuum based on island biogeography theory, landscape ecology and dispersal and colonization strategies of temporary wetland organisms.  相似文献

The recent interest in the conservation of the tropical forest is due, at least in part, to the potential economic and health benefits that can be exploited from several plants. This report shows the in vitro antioxidant activity of some fractions isolated from leaves of two Columbian Magnoliaceae, Talauma hernandezii G. Lozano-C and Dugandiodendron yarumalense Lozano. The activity was determined using the radical monocation 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS·+) and the stable free radical 2-2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), as part of general biological screening of these plants. The antioxidant capacity obtained from fractions was similar to those of α-tocopherol, tert-butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and ascorbic acid. The most active scavenger extract was the fraction 7 (TAA = 48.6 mmol Trolox/kg extract and IC50 ≤ 0.01 kg extract/mmol DPPH); and the least active was the fraction 1 (TAA = 11.23 mmol Trolox/kg extract and IC50 = 0.21 kg extract/mmol DPPH) all of them isolated from D. yarumalense. These results suggest that these plants can be attractive as source of antioxidant compounds with the ability to reduce radicals like ATBS and DPPH.  相似文献

An experiment under laboratory conditions was conducted to test the hypothesis that development and growth of copepodite stages in Calanus chilensis are temperature-dependent and not subject to food shortage in the upwelling area of the Humboldt Current, northern Chile. Field data obtained from June 1994 to May 1995 in Bahía Mejillones (23°S) were used to define four combinations of temperature and food under which copepodites were reared from Stage CIII to adulthood. The high temperature was 18.1 °C and the low temperature 13.1 °C, whereas the high food level was in the range of 6.8 to 24.8 μg l−1 chlorophyll a and the low level 1.0 to 6.8 μg l−1 chlorophyll a. As food a mixture of three unknown species of phytoflagellates and the diatom Navicula cryptocephala was used. This phytoplankton was initially obtained from the same sampling sites as copepods and kept in f/2 media at stable levels and composition throughout the experiment. The development rate (1/t), estimated from the time (t) elapsing between Stage CIV and adult, was significantly affected by both temperature and food, although low-food effects were much more remarkable. Low-food conditions also significantly reduced body length and “structural” (lipid-discounted) body mass at adulthood, while temperature only affected body length. The weight-specific growth rate was also affected by food and temperature, but again food effects were much more drastic. The results indicate that C. chilensis is a highly sensitive species to lack of food, and is possibly subject to food shortage during its annual cycle in the coastal upwelling area of northern Chile. Food limitation may help explain the seasonal pattern of adult size reported by previous studies in the area and the lack of consistence between the number of generations predictable from a temperature-dependent model and that observed in the field during the annual cycle. The biology, population dynamics, and production of Tylos europaeus were studied in two sandy beaches of the western coast of Portugal. At both sites, reproduction occurred seasonally, from April to July, with only one new cohort produced per year. Regarding population dynamics, cohort-splitting events were detected in males at the beginning of the reproduction period (April/May), resulting in two groups with distinct growth rates (fast-growing vs slow-growing males). Different biological characteristics were consequently detected in these two groups, namely regarding body size, lifespan, and contribution to the reproductive effort. Lifespan was estimated as approximately 3 years, for females and fast-growing males, and 4 years for slow-growing males. Cohort-splitting among males appeared as a possible strategy to cope with the highly male-biased sex ratios observed, which could lead to a strong male-male competition for mating. T. europaeus appeared as an annual species, with a univoltine life-cycle (one generation per year), and iteroparous females reproducing twice during their lifespan. Average growth production (P) was estimated at 0.082 g.m–2.yr–1 AFDW (ash-free dry weight) and the average annual biomass () (standing stock) at 0.052 g.m–2, resulting in a P/ ratio of 1.58. These results produced baseline information for the construction of a population-dynamics model and highlighted the potential of this species as an environmental quality-assessment bioindicator on sandy shores.Communicated by S.A. Steppe larks are rare species in Europe, and several reserves have been established in Spain to promote their conservation. Little is known, however, about the benefits these reserves provide for Iberian larks. At Las Amoladeras Bird Reserve predation of lark nests was high according to the Mayfield method: 68–99% of nests were preyed upon, primarily by red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes ) and feral dogs. A negative correlation between canid abundance and daily nest survival was detected, but there was no relationship between predator abundance and lark density. There was a positive correlation between canid track abundance and rabbit density. Evidence indicated that lark nest predation in the Iberian shrubsteppes was an example of incidental predation (Vickery et al. 1992), which nevertheless has caused serious conservation problems for the larks. Lark densities in some areas decreased 80% during the 3 years of our study. Incidental predation, which is determined by rabbit abundance, is a complicating factor for the conservation of these ground-nesting birds and should be taken into account in the management of reserves for steppe birds.  相似文献
