In the Summer 2004 issue of Remediation, the authors presented a study of the influence of buffering behavior in contaminated Andisol soil. This article, Part II, expands on this research by presenting the results of laboratory tests conducted to study the movement of heavy metals in contaminated Andisol soil during the first stage of an electrochemical remediation process. The analysis was performed on the soil after treatment and also on the washing solutions collected during the first four hours. In order to analyze the effectiveness of fast and simple techniques for monitoring the electroremediation process, computer‐aided modeling of speciation in the soil solution was performed in connection with the remediation treatment. The results show that the metals moved mainly as positive species in the soil and later occurred as insoluble forms relative to the pH value in the washing solution from the cathode chamber. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The chemical and material composition of MSWI bottom ash depends on the particle size; this suggests that the mechanisms and kinetics of natural weathering are also a function of particle size. This paper reports the effects of short-term natural weathering on the leaching of heavy metals (mainly Pb, Cu and Zn) from MSWI bottom ash. Initial concentrations of heavy metals were higher for the smallest particle size fractions, but these levels fell dramatically during the first 50 days of weathering before levelling off. The main differences between size fractions were in the pH and the solubility of calcium and aluminium. For the initial stages of weathering and small size fractions, portlandite solubility seemed to control the pH. In contrast, for fractions bigger than 6 mm, the formation of ettringite was the reaction controlling the pH and the solubility of sulphates, aluminium and calcium.  相似文献

In this study a combined anaerobic/aerobic full-scale treatment plant designed for the treatment of the source-separated organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was monitored over a period of one year. During this period, full information was collected about the waste input material, the biogas production, the main rejects and the compost characteristics. The plant includes mechanical pre-treatment, dry thermophilic anaerobic digestion, tunnel composting system and a curing phase to produce compost. To perform the monitoring of the entire plant and the individual steps, traditional chemical methods were used but they present important limitations in determining the critical points and the efficiency of the stabilization of the organic matter. Respiration indices (dynamic and cumulative) allowed for the quantitative calculation of the efficiency of each treatment unit. The mass balance was calculated and expressed in terms of Mgy(-1) of wet (total) matter, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Results show that during the pre-treatment step about 32% of the initial wet matter is rejected without any treatment. This also reduces the biodegradability of the organic matter that continues to the treatment process. About 50% of the initial nitrogen and 86.4% of the initial phosphorus are found in the final compost. The final compost also achieves a high level of stabilization with a dynamic respiration index of 0.3±0.1g O(2) per kg of total solids per hour, which implies a reduction of 93% from that of the raw OFMSW, without considering the losses of biodegradable organic matter in the refuse (32% of the total input). The anaerobic digestion process is the main contributor to this stabilization.  相似文献

A study of the effect of the organic loading rate (OLR) on the anaerobic acidogenic fermentation of two-phase olive mill solid residue (OMSR) derived from fruits with a low ripening index was carried out in a laboratory-scale completely stirred tank reactor at mesophilic temperature (35 degrees C). Eight experimental runs were carried out at OLRs of 3.2, 5.6, 7.4, 9.6, 11.0, 12.9, 14.0 and 15.1g T-COD/ld, which were equivalent to hydraulic retention times of 50.0, 28.8, 21.8, 16.9, 14.7, 12.4, 11.5 and 10.7d, respectively. The experimental results obtained demonstrated that the optimum value of OLR for the acidogenic fermentation process was 12.9 g T-COD/ld, for which a maximum production of acetic acid was achieved. It was found that inhibition of the process occurred at OLRs higher than 12.9 g T-COD/ld. This was characterized by a significant decrease in the acetic acid concentration in the effluent and an increase in the concentration of other volatile acids that may affect the methanogenic step. The process inhibition was also characterized by the plateau in the curves of the effluent substrate concentration versus the OLR applied. It was found that a first-order kinetics satisfactorily described the influence of non-acetic acid soluble organic matter concentration (S-COD( *)) on the rate of soluble organic matter conversion to acetic acid (R(S-COD)( *)), and the influence of acetic acid concentration (AcH) on the rate of acetic acid production (R(AcH)), while a potential equation type adequately described the influence of acetic acid concentration on the volumetric hydrogen production (R(ACH) ). The kinetic constant for soluble organic matter removal was 0.145 d(-1), while the constant for acetic acid formation was found to be 0.075 d(-1).  相似文献

In this work, the degradation of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in agricultural soil amended with sewage sludge is reported. The compounds analysed were: linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) with a 10-13 carbon alkylic chain, and nonylphenolic compounds (NPE), including nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol ethoxylates with one and two ethoxy groups (NP1EO and NP2EO). The degradation studies were carried out under winter (12.7°C) and summer (22.4°C) conditions in Andalusia region. The concentration of LAS was reduced to 2% of the initial concentration 100 day after sludge-application to the soil. The half-life time measured for LAS homologues were ranged between 4 and 14days at 12.7°C and between 4 and 7 days at 22.4°C. With regard to NPE compounds, after 8 and 4days from the beginning of the experiment at 12.7 and 22.4°C, respectively, their concentration levels were increased to 6.5 and 13.5mg/kgdm (dry matter) as consequence of the degradation of nonylphenol polyethoxylates. These concentration levels were reduced to 5% after 63 and 70 days for 12.7°C and 22.4°C, respectively. The half-life times measured for NPEs were from 8 to 16 days at 12.7°C and from 8 to 18 days at 22.4°C. Environmental risk assessment revealed that for LAS homologues no environment risk could be expected after 7 and 8 days of sludge application to the soil for 22.4 and 12.7°C, respectively; however, potential toxic effects could be observed for the nonylphenolic compounds during the first 56 days after sludge application to the soil.  相似文献

The effect of lignosulfonate on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), PHBV, was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The PHBV/lignosulfonate samples were prepared by melt mixing in an internal mixer. SEM showed that PHBV/lignosulfonate samples present a cracked surface that is more intense in mixtures with high lignosulfonate proportions. According to DSC, melting and glass transition temperatures of the PHBV matrix decrease with lignosulfonate addition. The same effect was observed for melting enthalpies (ΔHm), which indicates a decrease of crystallinity. TGA showed that thermal stability of PHBV/lignosulfonate samples was shifted to lower temperatures, which indicates the existence of an interaction between the thermal decomposition processes of PHBV and lignosulfonate.  相似文献

Landfill gas (LFG) emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are an important environmental concern in Brazil due to the existence of several uncontrolled disposal sites. A program of laboratory and field tests was conducted to investigate gas generation in and emission from an Experimental Cell with a 36,659-ton capacity in Recife/PE - Brazil. This investigation involved waste characterisation, gas production and emission monitoring, and geotechnical and biological evaluations and was performed using three types of final cover layers. The results obtained in this study showed that waste decomposes 4-5 times faster in a tropical wet climate than predicted by traditional first-order models using default parameters. This fact must be included when considering the techniques and economics of projects developed in tropical climate countries. The design of the final cover layer and its geotechnical and biological behaviour proved to have an important role in minimising gas emissions to the atmosphere. Capillary and methanotrophic final cover layers presented lower CH4 flux rates than the conventional layer.  相似文献
