Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental pollutants that are mutagenic, carcinogenic, and toxic to living organisms. Here, the ability and effectiveness of selected bacteria isolated from an oil‐contaminated area in biodegrading PAHs were evaluated, and the optimal conditions conducive to bacterial PAH biodegradation were determined. Of six bacterial isolates identified based on their 16S rRNA sequences, Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum could subsist on and consume nearly all hydrocarbons according to the 2,6‐dichlorophenolindophenol assay. The efficacy of this isolate at PAH biodegradation was then empirically confirmed. After 30 days of incubation, P. alkanoclasticum degraded 90.8% of the 16 PAH compounds analyzed and fully degraded eight of them. The optimum P. alkanoclasticum growth conditions were 35°C, pH 7.5, and NaNO3 as the nitrogen source. Under these biostimulant conditions, P. alkanoclasticum degraded 91.4% of the total PAH concentration and completely decomposed seven PAHs after 15 days incubation. Hence, P. alkanoclasticum is an apt candidate for the biodegradation of PAHs and the bioremediation of sites contaminated by them. 相似文献

Ozonation of alpha endosulfan and the effects of some parameters such as pH, temperature and partial pressure on ozonation were investigated and the kinetic constants were calculated in this study. Alpha endosulfan solutions were ozonated in a lab-scale semi-batch reactor under variable experimental conditions. Increase in dissolved ozone concentration had a positive effect on oxidation rate. Alpha endosulfan could be removed up to 94% at pH 4 for an ozonation time of 60 minutes. The oxidation reaction was found to be of second order and of first order with respect to both ozone and alpha endosulfan. The temperature dependent reaction expression of alpha endosulfan was obtained as kd = (1.889 exp(- 2.21 x 10(-3)/T). It was concluded that, although the rate of reaction was lower than the rate of other pesticide oxidation reported in the literature. alpha endosulfan presented an obvious reaction to ozonation. 相似文献

Abstract: A principal contributor to soil erosion and nonpoint source pollution, agricultural activities have a major influence on the environmental quality of a watershed. Impact of agricultural activities on the quality of water resources can be minimized by implementing suitable agriculture land‐use types. Currently, land uses are designed (location, type, and operational schedule) based on field study results, and do not involve a science‐based approach to ensure their efficiency under particular regional, climatic, geological, and economical conditions. At present, there is a real need for new methodologies that can optimize the selection, design, and operation of agricultural land uses at the watershed scale by taking into account environmental, technical, and economical considerations, based on realistic simulations of watershed response. In this respect, the present study proposes a new approach, which integrates computational modeling of watershed processes, fluvial processes in the drainage network, and modern heuristic optimization techniques to design cost effective land‐use plans. The watershed model AnnAGNPS and the channel network model CCHE1D are linked together to simulate the sediment and pollutant transport processes. Based on the computational results, a multi‐objective function is set up to minimize soil losses, nutrient yields, and total associated costs, while the production profits from agriculture are maximized. The selected iterative optimization algorithm uses adaptive Tabu Search heuristic to flip (switching from one alternative to another) land‐change variables. USDA’s Goodwin Creek experimental watershed, located in Northern Mississippi, is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach. The results show that the optimized land‐use design with BMPs using an integrated approach at the watershed level can provide efficient and cost‐effective conservation of the environmental quality by taking into account both productivity and profitability. 相似文献

Atmospheric dustfall is an important aspect of urban dust studies. Vanadium is considered as the marker element of air pollution emitted from residual oil and coal combustion. In this study, vanadium levels of outdoor dust particles are determined. The studied area covers the six sites located in Adapazarí (Turkey), which represents an earthquake-hit environment. The mass deposition rate was calculated for each sampling plate over the 30-days collection periods. The deposition rates for the six places in Adapazarí ranged from 20.5 to 84.9 μg/cm2/day. The arithmetic mean deposition rate for all places was 45.3 μg/cm2/day. Total dust deposition and vanadium loadings typically increased in magnitude according to the area order: Kampus > Serdivan > Çark C. > Ozanlar > Erenler > Ye?iltepe and Kampus > Serdivan > Çark C. > Ozanlar > Erenler > Ye?iltepe, respectively. The results suggested that vanadium may be useful for assessing the level of environmental pollution. 相似文献

The denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation is an ecologically important process for reducing the potential methane emission into the atmosphere. The responsible bacterium for this process was Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera belonging to the bacterial phylum of NC10. In this study, a new pair of primers targeting all the five groups of NC10 bacteria was designed to amplify NC10 bacteria from different environmental niches. The results showed that the group A was the dominant NC10 phylum bacteria from the sludges and food waste digestate while in paddy soil samples, group A and group B had nearly the same proportion. Our results also indicated that NC10 bacteria could exist in a high pH environment (pH 9.24) from the food waste treatment facility. The Pearson relationship analysis showed that the pH had a significant positive relationship with the NC10 bacterial diversity (p < 0.05). The redundancy analysis further revealed that the pH, volatile solid and nitrite nitrogen were the most important factors in shaping the NC10 bacterial structure (p = 0.01) based on the variation inflation factors selection and Monte Carlo test (999 times). Results of this study extended the existing molecular tools for studying the NC10 bacterial community structures and provided new information on the ecological distributions of NC10 bacteria. 相似文献

During the spring each year, the Eastern Mediterranean is affected by Khamaseen dust cyclones sourced from the North African Sahara. In order to characterize Khamaseen dust in Jordan, we collected dust from ten localities during the spring of 2006. The collected dust was analyzed for grain size, mineralogy, and chemical composition. The dust is predominantly aluminosilicates (clay minerals and feldspars), quartz and carbonates with minor amounts of phosphate. The particles are mostly subrounded to subangular and generally between 5 and 20 μm in size. The majority of the elements analyzed have a natural abundance and distribution. However, several elements such as As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Se and Zn have higher than natural abundances due to anthropogenic enrichment by various enrichment factors. The analyzed dust samples are chemically homogenous, indicating a similar provenance and good mixing by the Khamaseen winds. The rare earth elements patterns are similar to those of the upper continental crust composition and average shale. Total amount of dust deposited on Jordan during the spring of 2006 is around 0.3 million tons. 相似文献

Land use planning is an important element of the integrated watershed management approach. It not only influences the environmental processes such as soil and stream bed erosion, sediment and nutrient concentrations in streams, quality of surface and ground waters in a watershed, but also affects social and economic development in that region. Although its importance in achieving sustainable development has long been recognized, a land use planning methodology based on a systems approach involving realistic computational modeling and meta-heuristic optimization is still lacking in the current practice of integrated watershed management. The present study proposes a new approach which attempts to combine computational modeling of upland watershed processes, fluvial processes and modern heuristic optimization techniques to address the water-land use interrelationship in its full complexity. The best land use allocation is decided by a multi-objective function that minimizes sediment yields and nutrient concentrations as well as the total operation/implementation cost, while the water quality and the production benefits from agricultural exploitation are maximized. The proposed optimization strategy considers also the preferences of land owners. The runoff model AnnAGNPS (developed by USDA), and the channel network model CCHE1D (developed by NCCHE), are linked together to simulate sediment/pollutant transport process at watershed scale based on any assigned land use combination. The greedy randomized adaptive Tabu search heuristic is used to flip the land use options for finding an optimum combination of land use allocations. The approach is demonstrated by applying it to a demonstrative case study involving USDA Goodwin Creek experimental watershed located in northern Mississippi. The results show the improvement of the tradeoff between benefits and costs for the watershed, after implementing the proposed optimal land use planning. 相似文献

Today, as a result of erratic and unplanned urbanization, towns are rapidly becoming a mass of concrete and town-dwellers are suffocated by their busy and stressful professional lives. They feel a need for places where they can find breathing-space in their free time. Green areas within towns are important spaces where townspeople are able to carry out recreational activities. These places form a link between townspeople and nature. The importance of urban green areas is increasing with every passing day due to their social, psychological, ecological, physical and economic functions and their impact on the quality of towns. In this study it has been attempted to demonstrate the pressures of urban development on agricultural land by determining the changing land use situation over the years in the district of Akhisar. In this research, an aerial photograph from year 1939 and satellite images of the town from the years 2000 and 2007 were used. Land use changes in the region were determined spatially. As a result of this study, which aims to determine in which direction urbanization is progressing in the district, the importance of town planning emerges. This study will be informative for the local authorities in their future town planning projects. With its flat and almost flat fertile arable land, the district of Akhisar occupies an important position within the province of Manisa. From the point of view of olive production the region is one of Turkey's important centres. Fifty-five percent of the olive production in the province of Manisa is realized in Akhisar. However, the results of the present study show that while agricultural areas comprised 2.5805 km(2) in 1939, these had diminished to 1.5146 km(2) in the year 2000 and had diminished to 1.0762 km(2) in the year 2007 and residential area (dense) 0.449 km(2) occupied in 1939, in the year 2000 this had risen to 1.9472 and 2.3238 km(2) in the year 2007.
