The precision and persistence of the nocturnal, surface locomotor activity rhythm of the sand-beach amphipod Talorchestia deshayesi is described. The rhythm is expressed as a circadian activity period with no evidence of a circa-tidal component associated with the time of high tide. The rhythm is light-sensitive and entrainment occurs in response to changes in the time of an experimentally simulated dusk transition. Locomotor activity is initiated at the end of the dusk transition with cessation always occurring prior to dawn. The point of activity initiation is taken to be the position of a synchronizing cue controlling entrainment. We documented spatial and temporal patterns of urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and periwinkles (Littorina littorea) in three habitats: a persistent Laminaria longicruris and L. digitata bed; an urchin dominated barrens, and the edge of the kelp bed that formed a boundary between the two. Urchins were rare in the kelp and, when present, always large and well hidden, a pattern we interpret as a response to crab and lobster predation. Urchins were abundant in the barrens, and, in the summer when predaceous fish were active during the day, foraged only at nigh. We observed the formation of a dense urchin feeding front along the kelp bed edge, and these urchins remained exposed and feeding even during the summer. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that aggregations are an effective defense against some predators, and that the presence of crabs increases the tendency of large urchins to aggregate. We hypothesize that healthy Laminaria spp. beds persist because kelp bed associated predators keep urchins at low densities and in hiding. A reduction in predation pressure permits urchin densities to increase to the point where they form aggregations, which provide better defense than hiding. These aggregations then graze destructively on Laminaria spp., forming barrens. These barrens seem to be a new, stable configuration of the system. 相似文献

Surface water samples were collected from 55 sites in the Great Lakes Basin and analyzed for the presence of perchlorate using HPLC/MS/MS with an isotopically enriched internal standard. Sites included areas impacted by heavy industry, urbanization, agriculture and atmospheric deposition. Perchlorate was detected at several of the sites at concentrations close to the method detection limit (0.2 microg/l). Despite these low concentrations, its presence was confirmed by sample concentration and determination of the isotopic ratio of perchlorate. The presence of perchlorate at two of the sites was related to a fireworks display which had occurred prior to sampling. The other detections of perchlorate were in rivers/creeks draining watersheds which had high density livestock and crop farming activity. We suspect the two are related. To our knowledge, these are the first reported concentrations of perchlorate in Canadian surface waters. 相似文献

This paper describes a pilot scale treatment plant that has been designed and built for the thermal inactivation in pig slurry of two viruses that infect pigs--African swine fever virus (ASFV) and swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV). The plant treats pig slurry continuously at a rate of up to 100 litres/hour and functions by heating the slurry, maintaining at least 99.99% of the slurry at the required temperature for a minimum period of 5 minutes, and then recovering the heat to raise the temperature of the incoming slurry. Results obtained indicated that SVDV was inactivated in pig slurry to below detectable levels with an alkaline pH (pH 7.5 to 8, as is usually the case) at a temperature of between 50 and 55 degrees C. In acidified slurry (pH 6.4), inactivation occurred between 55 and 60 degrees C. The difference in inactivation temperatures was probably due to the presence of free ammonia in the unacidified slurry. We studied how the growth, reproduction, and survival of a common intertidal rockweed (Fucus distichus) varied across its tidal elevation at 14 sites around San Juan Island, Washington, USA in spring–summer and fall-winter seasons.
We also measured a suite of environmental factors including temperature, light, emersion time, slope, fetch, and herbivory.
To interpret the response of Fucus we included measurements of phlorotannins and carbon storage compounds (mannitol, laminarin). Growth and reproduction exhibited
parallel patterns across tidal zones and sites. Tidal zone was a significant source of variation for many Fucus response variables, whereas variation between sites was high but not generally a significant factor explaining Fucus growth and physiology. Unexpectedly, the tidal zone in which Fucus achieved its highest growth and reproduction switched between seasons. High zone thalli grew and reproduced better than Mid
zone thalli in fall but not in spring. This result can be explained by different combinations of factors influencing Fucus in each season. In spring, longer emersion times due to daytime low tides resulted in lower growth rates higher on the shore,
likely due to carbon limitation. In fall during nighttime low tides, emersion and carbon limitation stresses were minimal.
Overall, fall growth was lower than spring growth, but low fall light was not responsible. Instead, warmer average fall temperatures
in the High zone apparently favored growth and reproduction relative to the Mid zone. In contrast, Mid zone thalli were subjected
to more intense herbivory and hydrodynamic stress associated with wave exposure and steep substrata during the fall. At least
for some seaweeds, living in the presumably more stressful high zone can actually confer higher integrated performance. 相似文献

Efforts to tackle the current biodiversity crisis need to be as efficient and effective as possible given chronic underfunding. To inform decision-makers of the most effective conservation actions, it is important to identify biases and gaps in the conservation literature to prioritize future evidence generation. We used the Conservation Evidence database to assess the state of the global literature that tests conservation actions for amphibians and birds. For the studies in the database, we investigated their spatial and taxonomic extent and distribution across biomes, effectiveness metrics, and study designs. Studies were heavily concentrated in Western Europe and North America for birds and particularly for amphibians, and temperate forest and grassland biomes were highly represented relative to their percentage of land coverage. Studies that used the most reliable study designs—before-after control-impact and randomized controlled trials—were the most geographically restricted and scarce in the evidence base. There were negative spatial relationships between the numbers of studies and the numbers of threatened and data-deficient species worldwide. Taxonomic biases and gaps were apparent for amphibians and birds—some entire orders were absent from the evidence base—whereas others were poorly represented relative to the proportion of threatened species they contained. Metrics used to evaluate effectiveness of conservation actions were often inconsistent between studies, potentially making them less directly comparable and evidence synthesis more difficult. Testing conservation actions on threatened species outside Western Europe, North America, and Australasia should be prioritized. Standardizing metrics and improving the rigor of study designs used to test conservation actions would also improve the quality of the evidence base for synthesis and decision-making. 相似文献

Time-lapse videography of limpets mounted with light-emitting diodes was used to monitor the movements of a population of the non-homing Cellana grata on a vertical gully wall in Hong Kong. Animals were monitored for >7 days to examine spatial and temporal variation in their behaviour as the tides transited from a semi-diurnal to an almost diurnal pattern. Movement was synchronised with the tides, irrespective of the day–night cycles. Limpets rested low on the shore and were stimulated to move by the rising tide. Individuals moved up shore with the flooding tide, maintaining themselves in the awash zone, and then down shore on the ebbing tide, until they reached a resting height when the tide then fell beneath them, exhibiting ‘zonal shuttling’. A tight coupling of limpet position to tide height persisted through the changing tidal pattern, and almost all animals displayed the same organisation of activity over all tides. Initiation of activity and maximum height reached were probably controlled by the tides, but the cessation of activity may have been controlled by an internal clock. The pattern observed is consistent with the threat of attack from aquatic predators coupled with the need to minimise physical stresses while exposed. It is also consistent with the avoidance of grazing lower on the shore where interspecific competition may be more intense. Limpets showed two peaks of activity per tide, corresponding to when the rate of change of tide height was the greatest, except when tides became much reduced during the transit to a diurnal pattern. Movement was triphasic: an initial rapid phase, followed by a slower phase in the high shore and then a rapid phase before the limpets stopped moving. This structure is common in limpets and in this case is likely to be a consequence of animals maintaining themselves within the awash zone. Tide height appears to determine foraging activity, but with modifications in the behaviour in response to factors operating at more local temporal and spatial scales. 相似文献

To assess the potential for treated wastewater irrigation to impact levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and salinity
in irrigated soils, levels of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, and environmental covariates were measured in a treated wastewater holding pond (irrigation source water), water leaving
the irrigation system, and in irrigated soils over 2 years in a municipal parkland in Arizona. Higher E. coli levels were measured in the pond in winter (56 CFU 100 mL−1) than in summer (17 CFU 100 mL−1); however, in the irrigation system, levels of FIB decreased from summer (26 CFU 100 mL−1) to winter (4 CFU 100 mL−1), possibly related to low winter water use and corresponding death of residual bacteria within the system. For over 2 years,
no increase in FIB was found in irrigated soils, though highest E. coli levels (700 CFU g−1 soil) were measured in deeper (20–25 cm) soils during summer. Measurements of water inputs vs. potential evapotranspiration
indicate that irrigation levels may have been sufficient to generate bacterial percolation to deeper soil layers during summer.
No overall increase in soil salinity resulting from treated wastewater irrigation was detected, but distinct seasonal peaks
as high as 4 ds m−1 occurred during both summers. The peaks significantly declined in winter when surface ET abated and more favorable water
balances could be maintained. Monitoring of seasonal shifts in irrigation water quality and/or factors correlated with increases
and decreases in FIB will aid in identification of any public health or environmental risks that could arise from the use
of treated wastewater for irrigation. 相似文献
