Settleable particulate matter (SPM) is an atmospheric pollutant harmful to human health and the environment in high concentrations. Despite this fact, no up‐to‐date information on SPM levels exists for the capital of Chile, Santiago (7 million inhabitants). To address this knowledge gap, SPM sedimentation rates, including soluble and insoluble components, were measured at three different urban sites from July to November of 2016. We compare the measurements with ambient and meteorological information, as well as urban typology settings. Our results indicate SPM deposition rates between 2.5 and 3.9 g/(m2·30 days). Only one site exceeded the national limit of 4.5 g/(m2·30 days), but we found an increasing trend in all three sites. SPM and its insoluble sedimentation rates increased during warm and dry months and presented significant correlations with meteorological parameters. The highest sedimentation rates were measured at the location with the least permeable surfaces and the lowest green spaces, while the lowest sedimentation rates were found in the sites with abundant green spaces and permeable soil. No significant differences were detected in the soluble components. Our results suggest that SPM levels in Santiago are close to the national limit and may increase with climate change and urban expansion. 相似文献

We evaluated the effect of conspecific abundance and habitat quality of leks on the territorial behaviour of males in an exploded lekking species, the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax). The hypothesis that males more intensely defend territories with higher conspecific abundance and better habitat quality was evaluated experimentally analysing the agonistic response of experimental males to male decoys placed on their displaying areas. Decoy experiments showed that the intensity of display territory defence by little bustard males is density dependent. The time experimental males took to return to their display sites after decoy placement decreased with abundance of both males and females. The strength of their final response was positively associated to local male and female abundance in the vicinity of their display sites. Habitat quality also influenced males’ display territory defence since the intensity of male response increased with the degree of natural vegetation cover. Habitat quality was particularly relevant in explaining variation of experimental males’ snort call rate, which decreased with the degree in plough cover and increased with the number of fields in the lekking area. Snort call rate decreased with the level of male aggregation and was lowest in males exhibiting the strongest aggressive response to decoys. These results add new evidence for the density dependence of species’ breeding territorial behaviour, supporting density-dependent models of lek formation and reinforcing the role of resources defence in exploded lek mating systems. 相似文献

This paper presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing three forms of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) disposal: mechanical recycling, chemical recycling and composting. The LCA data was taken from lab scale experiments for composting and hydrolysis steps. Polymerization data in chemical recycling was obtained from computer simulation. Mechanical recycling data from lab scale were combined with the data from a plastics commercial mechanical recycling plant. The analysis considered two different product systems based on the input of the recycled PLA in the product system. Considering the categories: climate change, human toxicity and fossil depletion, the LCA showed that mechanical recycling presented the lowest environmental impact, followed by chemical recycling and composting. Eucalanus inermis is an abundant species in the eastern tropical and subtropical South Pacific, including the oceanic and coastal waters off Chile and Peru. Its annual life cycle was studied through a time-series sampling (weekly intervals) during 2002, at a fixed coastal station at an upwelling site (Mejillones Bay, 23°S) off northern Chile. The more-or-less continuous occurrence and abundance of naupliar and copepodid stages indicated that the species reproduces during most of the year, with two peaks: one during the austral spring and the other during the summer. Thereafter, an abrupt decline in the population was observed during winter. The abundances of E. inermis copepodids and nauplii were positively correlated with sea surface temperature, suggesting temperature-dependent development and growth during the spring–summer period. Three cohorts could be distinguished during one annual cycle, with generation times >30 days. The estimate of mean weight-specific daily growth (0.12 day–1) is lower than that of other species in the area, but it is consistent with a slower development rate. The distribution of this copepod is associated with the equatorial subsurface waters characterized by low-oxygen content (<0.5 ml l–1). The ascent of this water mass to the near-surface during coastal upwelling in the spring–summer period and the presence of E. inermis adults favor their reproduction and the development of cohorts in the food-rich upwelling environment. The wintertime disappearance of E. inermis from shallow waters is, thus, interpreted as a movement to deep waters (>200 m depth), probably in a lethargic mode, within the oxygen minimum zone in the adjacent oceanic area.Communicated by P.W. The performance of different commercially available catalysts (supported Pd, Pt, Rh, bimetallic Pd-Pt, and Cr-Cu-Ti oxide catalyst) for the oxidation of methane, alone and in presence of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide is studied in this work. Catalysts performance was evaluated both in terms of activity and resistance to poisoning. The main conclusions are that supported Pd and Rh, present the highest activities for methane oxidation, both alone and in presence of ammonia, whereas they are severely poisoned in presence of H2S. Pt and Cr-Cu-Ti are less active but more sulphur resistant, but their activity is lower than the residual activity of sulphur-deactivated Pd and Rh catalysts. The Pd-Pt catalyst exhibits low activity and it is quickly deactivated in presence of hydrogen sulphide. 相似文献

Abstract: The silvery gibbon ( Hylobates moloch ), endemic to the island of Java, relies on closed-canopy, lowland evergreen forest for its survival. Because Java has lost over 91% of its original forest, silvery gibbons currently occupy small, isolated forest fragments and are threatened with extinction. To contribute to a comprehensive conservation strategy for this species, we analyzed the mtDNA control region of 31 silvery gibbons representing most remaining populations. Our results suggest the presence of at least two genetically differentiated lineages: a "western" lineage, represented by the largest remaining natural population in Gunung Halimun National Park and a "central" lineage, consisting of smaller, more isolated populations in and around the Gunung Masigit/Simpang/Tilu complex, Gunung Gede/Pangrango, and Gunung Slamet. These two lineages, at a minimum, represent different management units that should, except in the most dire circumstances, be managed separately. 相似文献

While climate change adaptation policy has tended to focus on planned adaptation interventions, in many vulnerable communities, adaptation will consist of autonomous, “unplanned” actions by individuals who are responding to multiple simultaneous sources of change. Their actions are likely not only to affect their own future vulnerability, but, through changes in livelihoods and resource use, the vulnerability of their community and resource base. In this paper, we document the autonomous changes to livelihood strategies adopted by smallholder coffee farmers in four Mesoamerican countries (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica). Our aim is to gain insight into the process of autonomous adaptation by proxy: through an assessment of how farmers explain their choices in relation to distinct stressors; and an understanding of the set of choices available to farmers. We find that climatic stress is a feature in decision making, but not the dominant driver. Nevertheless, the farmers in our sample are evidently flexible, adaptive, and experimental in relation to changing circumstances. Whether their autonomous responses to diverse stressors will result in a reduction in risk over time may well depend on the extent to which policy, agricultural research, and rural investments build on the inherent logic of these strategies. 相似文献

This paper describes a novel methodology for evaluating the extent to which petrol stations affect their surroundings. The method is based on the fact that the ratio of the concentrations of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in the air of the petrol stations and their surroundings (basically determined by vapor emissions from unburned gasoline) differs from the ratio found in urban air, which is mainly influenced by traffic emissions. Bearing this in mind, the spatial limit of influence of petrol stations in any direction would be the first point, moving away from the station, where the ratio becomes equal to the urban background ratio. Application of the methodology involves multipoint measuring campaigns of the air at the studied petrol station and built-up area in general and processing the data with software capable of providing isoconcentration contours. The procedure should help local authorities in terms of land management, so that a “belt” can be established around petrol stations where housing or vulnerable populations and activities such as those in schools, hospitals and community centers should be restricted. 相似文献

High concentration of fine airborne particulates is considered one of the major environmental pollutants in Santiago, the Chilean Capital city, which in 1997 was declared a PM10 saturated zone. To date there is no control of the amounts of fine and coarse aerosols concentrations and the source and chemical characterizations of the PM2.5 particulates in the carbonaceous fractions are not well known even though this fraction could be represented almost the 50% in mass of the PM2.5.In this work, we present for the first time determinations of primary organic aerosol (POA) and secondary organic aerosol composition (SOA) fractions of the total mass of PM2.5 particulates collected in the urban atmosphere of Santiago City. Our purpose is to know the anthropogenic contributions to the formation of SOA. To accomplish this we used the elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) determinations developed by automatic monitoring stations installed in the city during the period 2002–2005, with a particular analysis of the summer time occurred in February 2004. Based on the EC tracer method, we have estimated the POA and SOA fraction and our data permit us to estimate the SOA reaching up to 20% of total organic aerosol matter, in good agreement to other measurements observed in large cities of Europe and U.S.A. 相似文献
