Obligate mutualists are predicted to benefit more from mutualism than facultative mutualists and harbor traits that help derive this extra benefit. I tested these predictions with a shrimp–goby mutualism. Individual shrimp (Alpheus floridanus) construct burrows that are shared with individual gobiid fishes that warn shrimp when emergence from burrows is unsafe. The benefit to gobies is refuge from predation. I compared predator avoidance performance of obligate (Nes longus) and facultative (Ctenogobius saepepallens) shrimp-associated gobies with access to a shell, a shrimp burrow, or no shelter. The two gobies performed similarly with shells and no shelter, but N. longus outperformed C. saepepallens with shrimp burrows. Thus, N. longus benefits more from mutualism than C. saepepallens. Also, N. longus has four behavioral traits that likely allow it to benefit from mutualism more than does C. saepepallens: (1) diving into the nearest shrimp burrow when confronted with predators, (2) long flight initiation distance, (3) long time-until-re-emergence after taking refuge, and (4) remaining close to shelter. The latter three likely come with a cost to foraging or mate acquisition as they limit searching range outside the burrow and detract from time spent outside burrows. Thus, N. longus likely harbors traits that allow it to deal with these costs. I discuss a framework for determining whether traits crucial to obligate association with shrimp (both for reaping benefits and dealing with costs) are pre-adaptations or are created through coevolution with shrimp. 相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis was used to examine the resources and position of macrobenthos in an estuarine seagrass food web in two sampling moments, during summer and winter. The contribution of each food source to the carbon requirements of consumers was estimated by a mixing model. The used carbon sources were largely seagrass associated, although seagrass tissues were utilized by only few species, and equally contributed to microphytobenthos and suspended particulate organic matter. Based on isotopic data, Lucinidae bivalves have an alternative trophic pathway via symbiosis with chemoautotrophic bacteria. Resource utilization inside and adjacent to seagrass beds did not differ significantly, implying that seagrass-associated inputs extend well beyond the borders of the vegetation patches. 相似文献

The life-history traits of long-lived benthic littoral invertebrates remain poorly understood. In this study, we analysed patterns of growth in three abundant sublittoral sponges from the western Mediterranean Sea, chosen for their close phylogenetic relatedness, sympatric distribution, and contrasting amounts of photosymbionts: high in Ircinia fasciculata, lower in I. variabilis, and absent in I. oros. Sponge area, perimeter, number of oscula, and epibiont abundance were quantified from in situ digital images taken monthly for 1.5 years and volumetric growth rates were calculated from empirical area–volume relationships. Volumetric growth rates were different among species and coherent with the photosymbiont abundance: high in I. fasciculata (40.03 ± 4.81 % year?1, mean ± SE), low in I. variabilis (5.65 ± 6.11 % year?1), and almost nil in I. oros (?0.04 ± 3.02 % year?1). Furthermore, a marked seasonality was observed in the first two species, with greater growth during the warm season. The high growth rates of I. fasciculata were likely fuelled by symbiont-derived photosynthates and required to compete in the well-lit, algal-dominated habitats this species prefers. In contrast, I. variabilis and I. oros tended to dwell in shaded habitats, where competition from slow-growing invertebrates is intense, and featured lower growth rates. The flattened morphology and lower circularity of I. variabilis indicates a capacity for adaptation to any space that is freed, while I. oros had less oscula and was more massive and circular, suggesting a strategy of passive occupation and minimisation of biological interactions. The results show that even congeneric species living sympatrically can achieve important biomass using different growth and substrate occupation strategies. 相似文献

This paper describes a σ-coordinate scalar transport model coupled with a Boussinesq-type hydrodynamic model. The Boussinesq model has the ability to calculate both three-dimensional velocity distributions and the water surface motion. To capture ‘dispersion’ processes in open channel flow, horizontal vorticity effects induced by a bottom shear stress are included in the Boussinesq model. Thus, a reasonable representation of vertical flow structure can be captured in shallow and wavy flow fields. To solve the coupled Boussinesq and scalar transport system, a finite-volume method, based on a Godunov-type scheme with the HLL Riemann solver, is employed. Basic advection and advection–diffusion numerical tests in a non-rectangular domain were carried out and the computed results show good agreement with analytic solutions. With quantitative comparisons of dispersion experiments in an open channel, it is verified that the proposed coupled model is appropriate for both near and far field scalar transport predictions. The fatty acid and alcohol composition of the pelagic amphipod, Themisto libellula, was monitored during the 5 first months of its life cycle (4–20 mm length) in an Arctic fjord, Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Fatty
acids of the three major lipid classes, polar lipids (PL), triacylglycerol (TAG), and wax esters (WE), were analyzed to highlight
ontogenic changes in their diet and metabolism. The PL composition of T. libellula did not show any strong variations along their growth except during the first month where an important increase of 20:5(n-3)
(EPA) and 22:6(n-3) (DHA) was observed. The TAG composition revealed a clear gradient corresponding to a diet shift from omnivorous
juveniles toward carnivorous sub-adults and adults. Indeed, fatty acid trophic markers of diatoms were dominant in the juveniles,
whereas 20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11), the Calanus sp. trophic markers, overwhelmed in the older stages. The WE composition highlighted the same general trend, however, differences
were found with the TAG and are discussed as a result of differences in turnover rates and assimilation pathways between the

We examined the cost of conserving species as climate changes. We used a Maxent species distribution model to predict the ranges from 2000 to 2080 of 74 plant species endemic to the forests of Madagascar under 3 climate scenarios. We set a conservation target of achieving 10,000 ha of forest cover for each species and calculated the cost of achieving this target under each scenario. We interviewed managers of projects to restore native forests and conducted a literature review to obtain the net present cost per hectare of management actions to maintain or establish forest cover. For each species, we added hectares of land from lowest to highest cost per additional year of forest cover until the conservation target was achieved throughout the time period. Climate change was predicted to reduce the size of species' ranges, the overlap between species' ranges and existing or planned protected areas, and the overlap between species' ranges and existing forest. As a result, climate change increased the cost of achieving the conservation target by necessitating successively more costly management actions: additional management within existing protected areas (US$0-60/ha); avoidance of forest degradation (i.e., loss of biomass) in community-managed areas ($160-576/ha); avoidance of deforestation in unprotected areas ($252-1069/ha); and establishment of forest on nonforested land within protected areas ($802-2710/ha), in community-managed areas ($962-3226/ha), and in unprotected areas ($1054-3719/ha). Our results suggest that although forest restoration may be required for the conservation of some species as climate changes, it is more cost-effective to maintain existing forest wherever possible. 相似文献

The life cycle of a product is generally characterized by the main following stages: raw materials acquisition, manufacturing, processing and formulation, distribution and transportation, use, re-use, maintenance, recycle and waste management. As regards the process, the following stages are usually distinguished: raw materials acquisition, process manufacture, use and dismantling at the end of the lifetime. Considering the life cycle concept in a risk analysis approach requires the adjustment of the classic risk analysis methodology. In order to build up this new methodology called LCRA (Life Cycle Risk Assessment), we relied on the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology, which allows the assessment of the potential environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a system. The nettle caterpillar, Darna pallivitta (Moore) (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae), is an invasive pest with established populations on three Hawai’ian islands. Indigenous
to Southeast Asia, D. pallivitta caterpillars cause defoliation of ornamental nursery stock and pose a human health hazard due to their urticating hairs that
can cause painful skin reactions. Identification of the pheromone component n-butyl (E)-7,9-decadienoate (E7,9-10:COOnBu) from D. pallivitta has made it possible to investigate the phenology and population dynamics using baited traps. Male captures in Jackson traps
baited with E7,9-10:COOnBu showed a vegetation preference for tall-grass fields and forest/grass interfaces over forest areas. Microlocation
preferences were also found for trap height, with over 65% of males being caught in traps suspended at 1 m, compared with
the traps at 3 and 5 m. Captures of male moths in traps baited with live females, and direct observations of female calling
behavior, showed peak activities 6–7 h after the onset of scotophase. This is a much later communication period than for D. bradleyi and D. trima and may provide a mechanism by which D. pallivitta maintains reproductive isolation in areas where all three species are present. Coastal and inland transects established in
eastern Hawai’i measured aspects of population fluctuations and radiation into new areas with relation to elevation and microclimate.
Population expansion was measured by comparing moth population means and 80% population boundaries over time. Both population
measures showed a higher expansion for the coastal transect. Differences in population expansion may be attributed in part
to temperature and elevation, while precipitation does not seem to have a strong effect. Both the behavioral and ecological
data collected can be used to optimize deployment of detection/control strategies and to predict population expansion/risk
assessment for establishing quarantine protocols for the nettle caterpillar. 相似文献
