Intertidal mudflats are important nursery grounds for juveniles of many fish species. However, they are being used increasingly to farm bivalve molluscs, which produce large amounts of organic “fluff”, overlying the mud. Fish such as sole, Solea solea, hide in this fluff from potential predators, but the energy consumed by respiring the fluff may be high due to its biorheological properties. We developed an ichthyoviscometer. It incorporates a freshly killed fish as a viscometer, and we developed it to measure the rheological properties of fluids and suspensions, including fluff, at scales encompassing those in gill ventilation. We have shown that the rheological behaviour of fluff is close to that of a gel with a yield stress strongly dependent on particulate organic matter concentration ([POM]). This has allowed us to model fluff flow through the gill channels in living sole as a function of fish size and [POM], showing that in a 26-g sole, fluff would halve flow at a [POM] value of 3.2 g l−1, and stop it at 3.4. 相似文献

Heavy metal pollution is a global issue due to health risks associated with metal contamination. Although many metals are essential for life, they can be harmful to man, animal, plant and microorganisms at toxic levels. Occurrence of heavy metals in soil is mainly attributed to natural weathering of metal-rich parent material and anthropogenic activities such as industrial, mining, agricultural activities. Here we review the effect of soil microbes on the biosorption and bioavailability of heavy metals; the mechanisms of heavy metals sequestration by plant and microbes; and the effects of pollution on soil microbial diversity and activities. The major points are: anthropogenic activities constitute the major source of heavy metals in the environment. Soil chemistry is the major determinant of metal solubility, movement and availability in the soil. High levels of heavy metals in living tissues cause severe organ impairment, neurological disorders and eventual death. Elevated levels of heavy metals in soils decrease microbial population, diversity and activities. Nonetheless, certain soil microbes tolerate and use heavy metals in their systems; as such they are used for bioremediation of polluted soils. Soil microbes can be used for remediation of contaminated soils either directly or by making heavy metals bioavailable in the rhizosphere of plants. Such plants can accumulate 100 mg g?1 Cd and As; 1000 mg g?1 Co, Cu, Cr, Ni and 10,000 mg g?1 Pb, Mn and Ni; and translocate metals to harvestable parts. Microbial activity changes soil physical properties such as soil structure and biochemical properties such as pH, soil redox state, soil enzymes that influence the solubility and bioavailability of heavy metals. The concept of ecological dose (ED50) and lethal concentration (LC50) was developed in response to the need to easily quantify the influence of pollutants on microbial-mediated ecological processes in various ecosystems. 相似文献

Ecologists wish to understand the role of traits of species in determining where each species occurs in the environment. For this, they wish to detect associations between species traits and environmental variables from three data tables, species count data from sites with associated environmental data and species trait data from data bases. These three tables leave a missing part, the fourth-corner. The fourth-corner correlations between quantitative traits and environmental variables, heuristically proposed 20 years ago, fill this corner. Generalized linear (mixed) models have been proposed more recently as a model-based alternative. This paper shows that the squared fourth-corner correlation times the total count is precisely the score test statistic for testing the linear-by-linear interaction in a Poisson log-linear model that also contains species and sites as main effects. For multiple traits and environmental variables, the score test statistic is proportional to the total inertia of a doubly constrained correspondence analysis. When the count data are over-dispersed compared to the Poisson or when there are other deviations from the model such as unobserved traits or environmental variables that interact with the observed ones, the score test statistic does not have the usual chi-square distribution. For these types of deviations, row- and column-based permutation methods (and their sequential combination) are proposed to control the type I error without undue loss of power (unless no deviation is present), as illustrated in a small simulation study. The role of different types of detached macrophytes in the food and habitat choice of a surf-zone inhabiting amphipod 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Allorchestes
compressa is the dominant macroinvertebrate species in wrack accumulations on surf zones of south-western Australia. These amphipods
were provided with a choice of macrophyte material representing brown and red algae and seagrass in a series of preference
experiments in the laboratory and field. Feeding experiments showed that A. compressa exhibited a strong preference for particular types of macrophytes (P < 0.01). Amphipods primarily consumed brown algae, with 69–98% of the biomass of Ecklonia radiata and 64% of the biomass of Sargassum sp. lost over the experiments. This study has shown that the amphipod A. compressa exhibits a clear preference for brown algae over red algae and seagrass as food. In terms of habitat preference, tank experiments
using a series of pair-wise comparisons showed that, in the absence of fish predators, A. compressa selected seagrass as its preferred habitat over the other types of wrack (P < 0.001). When satiated or starved, between 68 and 83 and 79 and 98% of amphipods were found in Amphibolis and Posidonia, respectively. In contrast, field-cage experiments revealed that A. compressa preferred either mixed wrack, brown algae or red algae over seagrass as a habitat (P < 0.01). The contrasts between results from the laboratory and field suggest that other factors such as the presence of predators,
water flow and light could influence habitat choice in the surf zone. This study shows that allochthonous material transported
to surf zones from other habitats therefore play different roles in driving secondary production in this shoreline habitat. 相似文献

Two methods were used to assess the grazing impact of roving herbivorous fishes across a coral reef depth gradient within
Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef. The first technique employed was a method traditionally used to quantify
herbivory on coral reefs via the (indirect) inference of herbivore impact from biomass estimates and reported feeding rates.
The second method (one of a range of direct approaches) used remote underwater video cameras to film the daily feeding activity
of roving herbivores in the absence of divers. Both techniques recorded similar patterns and relative levels of herbivore
biomass across five reef zones at the study site. Indirect estimates of the grazing impact across the reef depth gradient
of the three predominant species of herbivore broadly coincided with levels quantified directly by remote underwater video,
indicating that, to a large extent, presence does correspond to function. However, the video data suggested that, for individual
species in particular reef zones, the absolute level of impact may be less than that inferred from presence. In the case of
the parrotfish Scarus rivulatus, the video recordings suggested that, at the reef crest, an average of 52% (±18 SE) of each m2 area of reef would be grazed each month, compared with an area of 109% (±41 SE) suggested by inferring grazing activity from
presence alone. Potential biases associated with remote video recorders may explain some of the discrepancy between values.
Overall, the results suggest that, for some fish groups, the indirect method of inferring function from presence can provide
a good indication of relative levels of herbivore impact across a coral reef.

Charles Darwin aided his private decision making by an explicit deliberation, famously deciding whether or not to marry by
creating a list of points in a table with two columns: “Marry” and “Not Marry”. One hundred seventy-two years after Darwin’s
wedding, we reconsider whether this process of choice, under which individuals assign values to their options and compare
their relative merits at the time of choosing (the tug-of-war model), applies to our experimental animal, the European Starling,
Sturnus vulgaris. We contrast this with the sequential choice model that postulates that decision-makers make no comparison between options
at the time of choice. According to the latter, behaviour in simultaneous choices reflects adaptations to contexts with sequential
encounters, in which the choice is whether to take an opportunity or let it pass. We postulate that, in sequential encounters,
the decision-maker assigns (by learning) a subjective value to each option, reflecting its payoff relative to background opportunities.
This value is expressed as latency and/or probability to accept each opportunity as opposed to keep searching. In simultaneous
encounters, choice occurs through each option being processed independently, by a race between the mechanisms that generate
option-specific latencies. We describe these alternative models and review data supporting the predictions of the sequential

This study described the use of clay impregnated by KI in gas phase elemental mercury (Hgo) removal in flue gas. The effects of KI loading, temperature, O2, SO2 and H2O on Hgo removal were investigated using a fixed bed reactor. The Hgo removal efficiency of KI-clay with 3% KI loading could maintain at a high level (approximately 80 %) after 3 h. The KI-clay demonstrated to be a potential adsorbent for Hgo removal when compared with activated carbon based adsorbent. O2 was found to be an important factor in improving the Hgo removal. O2 was demonstrated to assist the transfer of KI to I2 on the surface of KI-clay, which could react with Hgo directly. NO and SO2 could slightly improve Hgo removal, while H2O inhibited it greatly. The results indicated that after adsorption, most of the mercury escaped from the surface again. Some of the mercury may have been oxidized as it left the surface. The results demonstrated that the chemical reaction primarily occurred between KI and mercury on the surface of the KI-clay. 相似文献

Corallium rubrum is the most famous and precious coral due to the intense characteristic red colour of its skeleton. We have determined the
presence of carotenoids in natural samples of C. rubrum from Marseille, Riou, and investigated their chemical composition. Analysis was performed both on soft tissues and hard tissues
including spicules and skeleton. Since hard tissues are made of a mineral fraction and an organic fraction obtained after
demineralization, extraction was performed both with and without demineralization by EDTA. The extracts were analyzed by complementary
methods of TLC, HPLC/DAD and HPLC/MS. The components were separated by RP-18 chromatography column using acetonitrile/methanol
for HPLC/DAD and acetonitrile/water gradient for HPLC/MS analysis. Our results give the first evidence of the presence of
canthaxanthin, 4,4′-diketo-β-carotene, as the major carotenoid in all samples. Spicules exhibited higher content in carotenoids
than skeleton. Demineralization treatment improved the efficiency of carotenoid extraction by an average factor of 5 and showed
that organic matrix contains canthaxanthin. 相似文献

The investigation of animal habitat selection aims at the detection of selective usage of habitat types and the identification
of covariates influencing their selection. The results not only allow for a better understanding of the habitat selection
process but are also intended to help improve the conservation of animals. Usually, habitat selection by larger animals is
assessed by radio-tracking or visual observation studies, where the chosen habitat is determined for some animals at a set
of specific points in time. Hence the resulting data often have the following structure: a categorical variable indicating
the habitat type selected by an animal at a specific point in time is repeatedly observed and will be explained by covariates.
These may either describe properties of the habitat types currently available and/or properties of the animal. In this paper,
we present a general approach to the analysis of such data in a categorical regression setup. The proposed model generalizes
and improves upon several of the approaches previously discussed in the literature. In particular, it accounts for changing
habitat availability due to the movement of animals within the observation area. It incorporates both habitat- and animal-specific
covariates, and includes individual-specific random effects to account for correlations introduced by the repeated measurements
on single animals. Furthermore, the assumption that the effects are linear can be dropped by including the effects in nonparametric
manner based on a penalized spline approach. The methodology is implemented in a freely available software package. We demonstrate
the general applicability and the potential of the proposed approach in two case studies: The analysis of a songbird community
in South-America and a study on brown bears in Central Europe. 相似文献

During early development in fish, phospholipase A2 (EC 3.1.1.4) regulates membrane lipid modifications, which relates to changes in environmental conditions and provision of
fatty acids required for metabolic energy substrates and prostaglandin biosynthesis. A method to analyze phospholipase A2 in rat tissues has been modified to measure its activity in embryonic Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.). Egg and embryo samples were collected during the 1994 spawning season. Enzyme activity was undetectable at fertilization
but in 10-d embryos was 230 pmol mg−1 h−1 (at 20 °C) and increased by ∼120% at hatch (17-d). Significant alterations in the fatty acid composition of important phospholipids,
phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), were also observed. The content of some critical polyunsaturated
fatty acids, and the ratio of unsaturated/saturated fatty acids, declined significantly over development. Acyl-chain restructuring
mediated through the activity of phospholipase A2, coupled with other observed lipid changes (significant increases in the PC/PE ratio and cholesterol content), would produce
a decreased fluidity of membranes during embryonic development, coinciding with the predicted upward movement of larvae in
the water column. Arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) removed from PE could serve as a precursor for biosynthesis of 2-series prostaglandins, and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) from PC is a likely source for other prostaglandin types. Despite removal of polyunsaturated fatty acids, there was an
overall increase in lipid and fatty acid concentration, which can be attributed to amino acid catabolism during early developmental
stages.
