The aim of this study was to analyze the total antioxidant capacity (TOSC), generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the different body regions of the estuarine polychaeta Laeonereis acuta (Nereididae) sampled at non-polluted (NOPOL) and polluted (POL) sites from Lagoa dos Patos (Southern Brazil). Organisms collected at POL during summer showed similar (p>0.05) TOSC values along the body, but worms collected at NOPOL presented higher (p<0.05) TOSC values in the posterior (P) region in respect of anterior (A) region and middle (M) region. TOSC in the P region at NOPOL was higher (p<0.05) compared with the same body region of worms at POL. In summer, ROS concentration was higher in A and M regions of worms at POL in respect of the organisms at NOPOL. During winter all the regions showed higher ROS in worms sampled at POL. It was registered absence of season influence on LPO content, but in the P region at NOPOL in summer there were lower LPO levels compared with the others regions (p<0.05). In vitro assays showed that P region, despite a higher basal ROS, presented a higher competence to cope with pro-oxidants compared with A and M regions (p<0.05), corroborating the field results. A lower proteic sulfhydril content was observed in P in respect of the other regions (p<0.05) supporting the idea of a highest oxidant condition in this region. The results indicate that worms collected at the POL site are confronted to higher ROS concentrations, affecting its antioxidant capacity, a result that depends of body regions.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to determine the dissipation of fenoxycarb and pyriproxyfen in fresh and canned peaches in order to know the levels of residues that can reach consumers in real circumstances. Two field dissipation studies were carried out, one of them at the pre-harvest interval (PHI) with good agricultural practice (GAP) and the other one in a situation of critical agricultural practice (CAP). Two canning dissipation studies were carried out for samples from both agricultural situations in an industrial pilot plant and the dissipation was determined in each relevant step. An analytical methodology was used including acetone-dichloromethane extraction, purification and analysis by liquid chromatography and diode array detection (LC-DAD) with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.05 mg/kg. It was validated under SANCO/10232/2006 Guidelines. These pesticides complied with the official maximum residue limits (MRLs) in peaches at the PHI with good agricultural practices. In hypothetical situation of a second application at the PHI, fenoxycarb and pyriproxyfen residues were above the MRLs in peaches. The canning study reduced the residues to no detectable levels in the cans for consumers.  相似文献

The spatial strategies and activity patterns of two populations of Pachygrapsus marmoratus (Fabricius), from Italy and Portugal, were studied in the field. The Mediterranean site was a non-tidal splash zone about 30 cm wide, while the Atlantic site was a 30 m wide intertidal belt. Almost all P. marmoratus of both populations were active on the emerged rocks, rarely entering the sea. The Mediterranean crabs actively fed on the algal turf throughout the 24 h, while in Portugal active crabs were more numerous at night. In the Italian population, all crabs were packed together, although large males had larger activity areas than females and smaller males. In Portugal, the large males were more concentrated in the sublittoral fringe, while both small males and females were confined to the eulittoral and littoral fringe. The Italian P. marmoratus performed feeding loops within areas smaller than 9 m2. Although most Portuguese crabs showed the same spatial strategy, some of them performed feeding migrations to the sublittoral fringe, covering distances of up to 20 m. Environmental factors (e.g. temperature), physical factors (e.g. refuge availability) and biotic factors (e.g. competitors and predators) of the different shores probably determine the behavioural plasticity of␣P.␣marmoratus. This study advances the limited research on work alignment and work engagement by investigating how perceived alignment of job tasks and organizational strategic priorities (strategic alignment) influences work engagement. Measures of job control and work social support were also included to enable comparisons between strategic alignment and other well‐established job resources. A total of 1011 employees of an Australian state police service responded to three electronic, self‐report surveys. A reciprocal model was assessed over three waves of data, with varying time lags: 18 (Time 1 to Time 2), 12 (Time 2 to Time 3), and 30 months (Time 1 to Time 3). Longitudinal, reciprocal relationships were observed for work engagement and job control, strategic alignment, and colleague support. Work engagement also predicted supervisor support over time (reverse effect). This study demonstrated that, in addition to job resources, perceived alignment of job tasks and organizational priorities plays an important role in maintaining high levels of work engagement over time. Understanding trophic interactions is critical for elucidating ecological roles of marine predators. We used behavioural observations and stable isotope mixing models to investigate the feeding ecology of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in the lagoon of Mayotte (East Africa). We identified prey during 77 % of 54 observed feeding events, observed in both rainy (61 % of events) and dry (39 %) seasons. Caranx melampygus and Gnathanodon speciosus were involved in 67 % of these events, with Tylosurus crocodilus (20 %) and Mugil cephalus (13 %) also consumed. Mixing models, based on δ13C and δ15N values of skin and blubber (n = 30 samples for both tissues), suggest that behavioural observations are representative of general feeding patterns. Indeed, C. melampygus and T. crocodilus (G. speciosus could not be included in models) were estimated to contribute most to dolphin diets, with mean estimated contributions of 44.6 % (±18.9) and 48.1 % (±19.1) for skin and 73.7 % (±14.9) and 16.9 % (±12.4) for blubber, respectively. Our results highlight the value of two independent methods (stable isotopes and behavioural observations) to assess prey preferences of free-ranging dolphins.  相似文献

Conspicuousness of courtship signals in animals likely evolved to maximize mate attraction while minimizing predator detection. It is assumed, though largely unknown, that environmental and luminosity conditions affect the detectability of ornaments and motor displays and could thus strongly influence behavior. We combined visual models and behavioral observations to test whether the multimodal display of the blue-black grassquit (Volatinia jacarina) is influenced by environmental conditions, predicting that males should display more often in moments with high sunlight incidence upon their bodies. By displaying in such a context-dependent fashion, males would be able to maximize conspicuousness of their iridescent blue-black plumage and avoid displaying continuously, since the latter would involve higher energetic investment. We recorded the rates of both complete displays (leap with singing) as well as incomplete ones (singing while perched) for males during repeated 30-min focal observations in varying environmental situations in the field. We found that when bathed directly in sunlight, males increased their rates of displays, tending to exhibit more complete rather than incomplete displays in this condition and suggesting a potential trade-off between display types. Our results suggest that animals may adjust the timing and precise location of signal activity to improve the efficiency or likelihood of detection of some signal elements.  相似文献

Escalating production and subsequent incorporation of engineered nanomaterials in consumer products increases the likelihood of nanomaterials being discarded in landfills. Although direct measurement of particle disposal has not yet occurred, life cycle assessments suggest that over 50% of nanomaterials produced will eventually reside in landfills. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate how organics (humic acid: 20-800 mg/L), ionic strength (100-400 mM NaCl), and pH (6-8) typical of mature leachates influence carbon nanotube surface charge, relative stability, and mobility through representative solid waste environments. Results from the batch experiments suggest that the presence of high molecular weight organics, such as humic acid, acts to stabilize carbon nanotubes present in leachate, even at high ionic strengths (>100 mM NaCl). These results also suggest that in mature landfill leachate, as long as humic acid is present, ionic strength (when represented as NaCl) will be a dominant factor influencing nanomaterial stability. Column experiment results indicate the carbon nanotubes may be mobile through solid waste, suggesting particle placement within landfills needs to be examined more closely.  相似文献

Biodegradable polymers are considered a feasible option to minimize the environment impacts of high disposal of solid waste. Nevertheless, environmental safety of these materials is a few explored issue. In this context, this study evaluated ecotoxicological effects in soil of the biodegradable materials poly(lactic acid)-PLA, poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate)-PBAT and their blends compatibilized with a chain extender. The tool used for this analysis was the bioassay with Allium cepa as test organism. Although the Ibirité reservoir (an urban tropical eutrophic reservoir) has been the recipient of the discharge of a large volume of raw urban sewage, the key cause of ecosystem degradation has been historically solely attributed to the discharge of effluents from an oil refinery. This fact motivated an investigation to unravel the compositions of contaminants in the sediments to evaluate their distributions, possible sources, and potential impacts on sediment–water quality. The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons and of metals and metalloids were, in general, significantly lower than some selected polluted sites used for comparison. Calculated distribution indexes showed that the hydrocarbon sources were petrogenic, pyrogenic, and biogenic. Only a few PAHs exceeded the threshold effects level (TEL) guideline. Industrial activities are the presumed sources of metals and metalloids except for copper, which is from copper sulfate used as algaecide in the reservoir. The bioavailable concentrations of some metal and metalloid exceeded the TEL–PEL guidelines. The acid volatile sulfide concentration was greater than that of the simultaneously extracted metals in the clayey–silty reservoir sediments, whereas the opposite result was observed for the sandy sediments of the tributaries. The sediment interstitial water toxic units were >1 for metals, thus indicating that metals are potentially toxic to the benthos. Considering the data set generated in this study, it can be concluded that the degradation of Ibirité reservoir and its tributaries cannot be solely attributed to the input of hydrocarbons, but predominantly to the discharge of raw urban sewage and effluents from other industrial sources.  相似文献
