For males of socially polygynous avian species like the spotless starling, there may exist a trade-off between investing in
paternal care and controlling several nests. To determine how the intensity of paternal care affects reproductive success
per brood sired or expressed as the total number of young raised in all nests controlled by the same male, it is necessary
to manipulate paternal care. Testosterone (T) has been shown to depress the tendency for males to care for their young, and
induces them to acquire more mates. The effects of paternal care on reproductive success were studied by treating certain
male starlings with exogenous T and others with the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (CA), and comparing the parental behavior
of T- and CA-males throughout the breeding season with that of controls. CA-males fed their chicks more during the first week
after hatching than T-males, with controls feeding at intermediate rates, both on a per nest basis and as total effort for
all nests controlled by the same male. Paternal feeding rates during the first week of chick life had a significant positive
effect on the number of fledged young. The hormone treatment significantly affected the number of chicks raised per nest,
CA-males having a higher breeding success per nest than T-males, and controls showing intermediate levels of success. There
was no significant effect of treatment on total reproductive success attained by males throughout the season. In the polygonous
spotless starling, the intensity of paternal care of young affects reproductive success per nest positively but not on a seasonal
basis.

Measuring progress toward international biodiversity targets requires robust information on the conservation status of species, which the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species provides. However, data and capacity are lacking for most hyperdiverse groups, such as invertebrates, plants, and fungi, particularly in megadiverse or high-endemism regions. Conservation policies and biodiversity strategies aimed at halting biodiversity loss by 2020 need to be adapted to tackle these information shortfalls after 2020. We devised an 8-point strategy to close existing data gaps by reviving explorative field research on the distribution, abundance, and ecology of species; linking taxonomic research more closely with conservation; improving global biodiversity databases by making the submission of spatially explicit data mandatory for scientific publications; developing a global spatial database on threats to biodiversity to facilitate IUCN Red List assessments; automating preassessments by integrating distribution data and spatial threat data; building capacity in taxonomy, ecology, and biodiversity monitoring in countries with high species richness or endemism; creating species monitoring programs for lesser-known taxa; and developing sufficient funding mechanisms to reduce reliance on voluntary efforts. Implementing these strategies in the post-2020 biodiversity framework will help to overcome the lack of capacity and data regarding the conservation status of biodiversity. The primary goal of the paper is to show the validity of investing capital in fertilizer–mining companies, both from a market return perspective for individual or institutional investors, or from a hedging standpoint for insurance companies and other economic actors exposed to inflation risk and high agricultural commodity prices. After providing some elements on the fertilizer market and describing the joint dynamics of corn, wheat and fertilizer prices over the last decade, we analyze an exhaustive sample of listed fertilizer producing companies over the years January 2004–December 2012. We show that their shares generated quite good returns over the whole period and extremely high ones during the years January 2004–December 2007, both in absolute terms and compared to their betas. We also exhibit that these returns display higher sensitivities to major agricultural indexes than to the World Bank Fertilizer Index, making the hedging argument quite compelling. 相似文献

Venom-injecting structures have arisen independently in unrelated arthropods including scorpions, spiders, centipedes, larval owlflies and antlions, and Hymenoptera (wasps, ants, and bees). Most arthropods use venom primarily as an offensive weapon to subdue prey, and only secondarily in defense against enemies. Venom is injected by biting with fangs or stinging with a specialized hypodermic structure used exclusively for the delivery of venom (usually modified terminal abdominal segments). A true sting apparatus, previously known only in scorpions and aculeate wasps, is now known in a third group. We here report the first known case of a cerambycid beetle using its antennae to inject a secretion that causes cutaneous and subcutaneous inflammation in humans. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the terminal antennal segment of Onychocerus albitarsis (Pascoe) has two pores opening into channels leading to the tip through which the secretion is delivered. This is a novel case of convergent evolution: The delivery system is almost identical to that found in the stinger of a deadly buthid scorpion. 相似文献

Adjusting for the operational environment in studies of performance measurement is very important, otherwise the analysis may lead to unrealistic scores, especially when its influence on costs is high, such as in the water utilities. In this paper, we study the influence of exogenous variables on the water utilities performance by applying conditional efficiency measures based on the order-m method and its probabilistic formulation. We use a sample of 66 water utilities operating between 2002 and 2008, representing about 70% of the Portuguese population. Our research suggests that inefficiency of Portuguese water utilities is substantial for some utilities: several exogenous variables might influence it considerably. For example, regulation has a positive influence on efficiency but when drinking water supply and wastewater services are provided by the same utility or when the wholesale and retail activities are provided together, the performance is lower. The effect of ownership is inconclusive and the variables residential customers, water source, peak factor, and density of customers have a mixed influence on performance which varies according to their scores. 相似文献

The management of small-scale freshwater fisheries in Amazon has been based usually on surveys of urban markets, while fisheries
of rural villages have gone unnoticed. We compared the fishing characteristics (catch, effort and selectivity) between an
urban market and five small villages in the Lower Tocantins River (Brazilian Amazon), downstream from a large reservoir. We
recorded 86 and 601 fish landings in the urban market and villages, respectively, using the same methodology. The urban fishers
showed higher catch per unit of effort, higher amount of ice (related to a higher fishing effort, as ice is used to store
fish catches) and larger crew size per fishing trip, but village fishers had a higher estimated annual fish production. Conversely,
urban and village fishers used similar fishing gear (gillnets) and the main fish species caught were the same. However, village
fishers showed more diverse strategies regarding gear, habitats and fish caught. Therefore, although it underestimated the
total amount of fish caught in the Lower Tocantins River region, the data from the urban market could be a reliable indicator
of main fish species exploited and fishing gear used by village fishers. Monitoring and management should consider the differences
