This study tests an alternative method to the traditional unhairing method used during the process of tanning the hides. The new method is based on the substitution of sodium sulfide by hydrogen peroxide as an unhairing agent in both hair recovery and recirculation of the floats employed in the process. The properties of the hides obtained using the two methods have been compared and the results indicate that those hides have similar physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties. However, the differences existing from an environmental point of view are significant. These include reductions of water consumption (approx 70%), chemical oxygen demand (approx 35%), toxicity (98%) and total kjendhal nitrogen (50%). Also, the risk associated with the production of hydrogen sulfide is eliminated, which implies a great improvement in terms of safety for the workers. Given the large amounts of water and chemical pollution discharged in the process, the reductions in absolute values represent a significant improvement. A financial assessment was carried out to demonstrate that the proposed new system is 16% more economic than the traditional one. 相似文献

Tanning processes performed in drums consume large amounts of water and chemicals, most of which end up in the wastewater. This study explores an alternative approach at an industrial scale to the traditional pickle-chrome tanning method. The new method replaces formic and sulphuric acids with sulphonic aromatic acid. Because it is done without float, there is a sizeable reduction in the amount of added salt and chrome salt as well as an increase in temperatures at the end of the tanning process. From an environmental perspective, the new method offers important advantages. For instance, there is no float addition in the tannage. Also, there are reductions of 94% and 99%, respectively, in the discharge of chlorides and chrome, as well as a 75% reduction in the residual float. Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) previously spiked with performance reference compounds were exposed in wastewater. After 6 days of exposure, 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified in SPMDs. Exchange rate constants and time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations of SPMD-available PAHs in water were calculated. The bias of using SPMDs to estimate an actual TWA concentration if the concentration in water fluctuates, as can be expected in wastewater, was studied with numerical simulations. The bias increased with the exchange rate constant. However, most exchange rate constants evaluated in SPMDs exposed in wastewater were small enough for SPMDs to estimate a TWA concentration of PAHs even when the water concentration varied. TWA-SPMD-available concentrations were always below total dissolved (operationally defined as 0.7 microm) concentrations, indicating that part of the dissolved PAHs was not available for sampling. In situ partitioning coefficients K(DOC) were computed and found to be slightly higher than data from the literature. The photochemical transformation of natural estrogenic steroid 17beta-estradiol (E2) and the synthetic oral contraceptive 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) has been studied in dilute non buffered aqueous solution (pH 5.5-6.0) upon monochromatic (254 nm) and polychromatic (lambda>290 nm) irradiation. Upon irradiation at 254 nm, the quantum yields of E2 and EE2 photolysis were similar and evaluated to be 0.067+/-0.007 and 0.062+/-0.007, respectively. Upon polychromatic excitation, and by using phenol as chemical actinometer, the photolysis efficiencies have been determined to be 0.07+/-0.01 and 0.08+/-0.01 for E2 and EE2, respectively. For both estrogens, photodegradation by-products were identified with GC/MS and LC/MS. In a first step, a model compound--5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthol (THN)--, which represents the photoactive phenolic group, was used to obtain basic photoproduct structural informations. A hydroponic screening method was used to identify high biomass crop plants with the ability to accumulate metals. Highest values of shoot accumulation were found in maize cv. Ranchero, rapeseed cv. Karat, and cardoon cv. Peralta for Pb (18 753 mg kg(-1)), Zn (10 916 mg kg(-1)), and Cd (242 mg kg(-1)), respectively. Subsequently, we tested the potential of these three cultivars for the phytoextraction of a metal spiked compost, finding out that, in cardoon and maize plants, increasing Zn and Cd concentrations led to lower values of root and shoot DW. By contrast, rapeseed shoot growth was not significantly affected by Cd concentration. Finally, a metal polluted soil was used to check these cultivars' phytoextraction capacity. Although the soil was phytotoxic enough to prevent the growth of cardoon and rapeseed plants, maize plants phytoextracted 3.7 mg Zn pot(-1). Monitoring PCDD/Fs, PCBs and metals in the ambient air of an industrial area of Catalonia, Spain 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In 2005 and 2006, the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Tl and V) were measured in air samples collected in an industrial area of Sant Adrià del Besòs (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) where a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) is placed, and in a background/control area. In general terms, concentrations of all environmental pollutants were higher at the industrial site. No significant seasonal/temporal variations were observed in any of the areas. No Pearson correlation was found between the PCDD/F concentrations and the environmental conditions of the two sampling periods considered. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed to get information on the relationship among samples, pollutants, and emission sources. The results indicate that the MSWI of S. Adrià de Besòs is not a significant emission source of the above compounds for the area under its direct influence. Moreover, a notable difference in the PCDD/F congener profiles was found between ambient air and stack gas emissions, indicating that the current levels of PCDD/Fs are more related to other potential emissions sources rather than to those from the MSWI. 相似文献

Various developmental stages (early larvae to adults) of Euphausia superba have been collected in different seasons in the Weddell Sea, the Lazarev Sea and off the Antarctic Peninsula to investigate
the role of lipids and fatty acids in the life cycle of the Antarctic krill. The total-lipid data for E. superba exhibited seasonal variations, with low lipid levels in late winter/early spring and the highest levels in autumn. Seasonal
changes were most pronounced in the immature and adult specimens, increasing from about 10% lipid of dry mass to more than
40%. The fatty-acid compositions of the younger stages were dominated by 20:5(n-3), 22:6(n-3) and 16:0. These are typical
phospholipid fatty acids, which are major biomembrane constituents. The phospholipid composition was similar in the older
stages. With increasing storage of triacylglycerols in the lipid-rich immature and adult stages, the fatty acids 14:0, 16:0
and 18:1(n-9) prevailed, comprising about 70% of total triacylglycerol fatty acids. The trophic-marker fatty acids 16:1(n-7)
and 18:4(n-3), indicating phytoplankton ingestion, were less abundant. They reflected, however, the dependence of the larvae
on phytoplankton as well as the seasonal changes in algal composition. The generally close linear relationships between fatty
acids and lipid suggest that the fatty-acid compositions of the collected specimens were largely independent of the respective
developmental stage, season and region. The linear fit indicates that triacylglycerol accumulation started at a level of about
5% of total lipid. Considering the various overwintering scenarios under discussion, the life cycle and reproductive strategies
of krill are discussed in the context of the lipid metabolism and fatty-acid composition of E. superba. Lipid production is effective enough to accumulate large energy reserves for the dark season, but E. superba does not exhibit the sophisticated biosynthetic pathways known from other Antarctic euphausiids and copepods. Although important,
lipid utilisation appears to be just one of several strategies of E. superba to thrive under the extreme Antarctic conditions, and this pronounced versatility may explain the success of this species
in the Southern Ocean.

Juvenile and adult marine organisms differ in their morphology, chemistry, physiology, behavior, and ecology. Because juvenile
algae are thinner, smaller, and have more delicate tissues than adults, they are often assumed to be more susceptible to grazers.
We examined within-species food preferences of four common generalist herbivores for juvenile and adult tissues of eight common
brown algae in two-choice laboratory food-preference experiments. Our results showed that juvenile algae did not tend to be
a preferred food of herbivores. Juvenile tissues were significantly preferred over adult tissues in only four of the 32 combinations
of algae and herbivores tested. In 12 experiments, adult tissues were preferred over juvenile tissues, and no choice occurred
in the remaining 16 experiments. When sea urchins exhibited a preference, it was always for adult tissues. The other three
herbivores, an isopod and two snails, were more variable in their choices, sometimes preferring juveniles, sometimes adults,
and sometimes having no preference. We measured nitrogen and phlorotannin concentrations in adult and juvenile seaweeds to
see whether these parameters were correlated with herbivore food preferences. Nitrogen levels were similar in juveniles and
adults of three algal species and were higher in juveniles of two. Phlorotannin levels were higher in juveniles of four species
and lower in juveniles of one. The other three species showed no differences in phlorotannin levels. Phlorotannin concentrations
decreased with increasing juvenile size in three species and increased with increasing size in one species. Neither nitrogen
nor phlorotannin concentrations explained overall herbivore food preferences for algae of different stages. Our results suggest
that preferences of certain grazers for juvenile algae are not as strong as previously assumed and are dependent on herbivore
species. Preferences between juveniles and adults are likely to be determined by a combination of morphological and chemical
features of the tissues and the unique responses of herbivore species to those features.

A distinct smell of dimethylsulfide (DMS) was noted at the edge of the intertidal mudflat of Marennes-Oléron Bay, at the
French Atlantic coast, where dense populations of the marine flatworm Convoluta roscoffensis Graff (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria) were present. DMS is the cleavage product of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). DMSP
was shown to be present in high amounts in sediment containing the flatworm as well as in axenic cultures of the symbiotic
alga Tetraselmis sp. that was isolated from the flatworm. In untreated sediment samples containing C. roscoffensis the concentration of DMS was as high as ∼55 μmol l−1 sediment, and in samples that were fixed with glutaraldehyde the concentration of DMS was even three orders of magnitude
higher (∼66 mmol l−1 sediment). This rapid cleavage of DMSP to DMS in fixed samples was unexpected. Pure DMSP was stable in glutaraldehyde, and
it was therefore concluded that a DMSP-lyase was responsible for cleavage in the field samples. The isolated symbiotic alga,
Tetraselmis sp., did not show DMSP-lyase activity, indicating that DMSP-lyase may have been present in the flatworm, although the role
of bacteria could not be excluded. The Chl a-specific DMSP content of C. roscoffensis (∼200 mmol g−1) was much higher than that of Tetraselmis sp. (∼30 mmol g−1). Possibly, DMSP was not only present in the symbiotic alga, but was also incorporated in the body tissue of the flatworm.
It remains unclear what the function of DMSP is in C. roscoffensis. In Tetraselmis sp., but not in C. roscoffensis, DMSP increased with increasing salinity. It was concluded that salinity probably does not play an important role in the
dynamics of DMSP and DMS in sediment containing C. roscoffensis.
