An experiment was conducted to determine the influence the time of brush-cutting can have on plant regrowth and attractiveness
to herbivores that browse in linear corridors. The influence of cutting time on leaf flush and senescence, shoot morphometry,
and biomass was measured for 3 consecutive years after initial brush-cutting. Results indicate that morphological and phenological
attributes of three woody deciduous plants were influenced by the timing of brush-cutting for up to 3 years after initial
cutting. Brush-cutting generally stimulated plants to produce larger than normal shoots and delay leaf senescence. The degree
to which plants were affected, however, varied with the timing of initial cutting and the species in question. Generally,
plants cut later in the year resprouted more vigorously and were taller in the third year after cutting but produced less
overall biomass than when cut earlier. In the years following brush-cutting, plants cut earlier flushed leaves earlier in
the spring but delayed leaf senescence in the fall when compared to uncut controls. Results of these trials suggest that brush-cutting
time influences plant response and several plant attributes known to influence plant attractiveness to moose and other herbivores.
We therefore recommend that roadside and railside vegetation management plans consider the influence of cutting time on plant
regrowth. Such considerations can ensure that brush is cut to reduce the attractiveness of plant regrowth in these linear
corridors, reduce the utilization of such brush by herbivores, and, as such, mitigate collision risk between motorists and

A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-carbon filtration system was developed by the Access Business Group, LLC, to reduce the indoor levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The HEPA filter removes the particle-bound PCDD/Fs, and the carbon filter removes the gaseous fraction. Because of the toxicity of PCDD/Fs, it is very difficult to handle them in the laboratory. In this study, mathematical modeling was performed to evaluate the performance of the HEPA-carbon filtration system for PCDD/Fs removal and to optimize its design and operation. The model was calibrated with experimental data conducted with toluene in a sealed room. Model simulations with four selected congeners demonstrated that it takes approximately 1 hr for the indoor air treatment system to reach the maximum removal efficiency and that the carbon air filter has a life time of 10(7) yr for dioxin removal. Given a zero emission from the HEPA filter, the overall removal efficiency is 78.7% for 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro dibenzo-p-dioxins, 89.8% for octa-chlorodibenzodioxin, 78% for tetra-chlorodibenzofuran, and 89.8% for octa-chlorodibenzofuran. The larger the mass emission from the HEPA filter, the lower the overall removal efficiency, and the larger the ratio of the filter flow rate (Q(f)) to the room flow rate (Q), the higher the overall removal efficiency. When the ratio of Q(f)/Q is 15, an overall removal efficiency of 90% can be reached for all four of the selected compounds. Specimens of the edible crab Cancer pagurus (L.) collected in the Skagerrak, Denmark, between June and August 1990 were examined in the laboratory. Impairment of respiratory function after pre-exposure (7 d) to sub-lethal concentrations of Cu and Zn (0.4 mg l-1) was only detectable during hypoxic exposure [PO2 (partial pressure of oxygen) =60 torr]. This was indicated by a decrease in the transfer factor (TO2), due principally to an increase in the PO2 differential across the gills. Cu and Zn exposure did not cause significant changes in ventilation or perfusion although there was some indication that cardiac output may increase in respiratory-impaired individuals. After 28 d exposure no difference was noted in the respiratory responses to hypoxia of treated and untreated crabs. It is concluded that respiratory impairment was due to an increase in the diffusion barrier thickness at the gills and that this was reversible even during continued exposure to trace metal contamination. 相似文献

Current projections estimating world population growth read in conjunction with corresponding projections of increased world energy consumption, point to electricity as the cleaner fuel of the future, especially because of its high efficiency and low levels of pollution. Due mostly to the fact that the electrical end-use devices are considerably more efficient than those using other forms of energy, most developed countries show decreasing curves of energy intensity as technologies become more sophisticated and shift over to increased reliance on electricity. It is therefore argued in this article that a gradual shift away from fossil fuels to electricity is a promising possibility to bring down global air pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases to acceptable levels. Examples are given of greater efficiency achieved by electrification. Overall gains in energy efficiency from the change over from fossil fuels to electricity, are possible even in situations where the electricity is generated by fossil fuel combustion, despite the loss of primary energy in the conversion process. The article also presents electricity generating projects designed for developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The generation of electricity from the combustion of renewable sources (biomass waste), fossil fuels, and other innovative methods are outlined. 相似文献

Since the adoption of ISO 14001, companies have examined the standard and considered certification. Although the framework is useful and enhancing environmental management systems is beneficial, the adoption of ISO 14001 alone will not provide maximum company benefits. Higher crop production normally demands higher nutrient application rates and consequently increased mineral nitrogen use. With food demand for 2030 estimated around 2800 mill. tonnes (t) yr-1, the corresponding mineral N consumption figure is 96 mill. t (78 mill. t yr-1 in 1995/1997). Global-level mineral N losses to the environment from mineral fertilizer use are currently 36 mill. t yr-1, worth USD 11,700 mill. and with adverse environmental impacts. However, innovative fertilizer-use efficiency (FUE) technologies enable increased production with a less than a proportionate increase in mineral-N use. Moreover, nitrogen-nutrient supplies can be augmented through improvements in agricultural production systems and in the exploitation of alternative sources such as biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). By 2030, with adequate policy, technology transfer, research and investment support, the on-farm adoption of BNF and FUE technologies could generate savings of 10 mill. t yr-1 of mineral N, worth USD 3300 mill. 相似文献

Proposals from the European Commission have raised the possibility that Member States may be able to subtract the concentrations of natural components of airborne particulate matter from measured concentrations when evaluating compliance with EU Limit Values. By applying the pragmatic mass closure model [Harrison et al., 2003. A pragmatic mass closure model for airborne particulate matter at urban background and roadside sites. Atmospheric Environment 37, 4927–4933] to chemical composition data for PM10, it has been possible to estimate the concentrations of natural sea salt, strongly bound water and secondary organic carbon (which is assumed wholly biogenic) to the measured mass of PM10. Because of the difficulty in distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic crustal dusts, the contribution of natural windblown dust and soil has not been accounted for. When the natural components are estimated for two urban and one rural site in the UK, the long-term mean PM10 concentration is reduced by between 5.2 and 7.3 μg m−3. The number of exceedences of the 50 μg m−3 24-h limit value falls dramatically from 54 to 21 (from a total of 291 days) at an urban street canyon site, 7 to 3 (n=292 days) at an urban background site and from 8 to 0 (n=241 days) at a rural site when using gravimetric PM10 concentrations. The calculations have also been performed using PM10 concentrations measured by TEOM increased by a factor of 1.3 as recommended by the European Commission as an interim means of estimating gravimetric equivalency, and the number of exceedences of the 24-h limit value fell from 92 to 47 (from a total of 291 days) at the urban street canyon site, from 11 to 3 (n=292 days) at the urban background site and from 6 to 3 (n=241) at the rural site. Clearly, therefore, application of this proposed measure would make a very major difference to the likelihood of compliance or otherwise with the 24-h limit value for PM10. 相似文献

Transmission electron microscopy study of the gills of Heteropneustes fossilis, exposed to 4 mg/liter of malathion (1/3 of LC50) for 24, 48, 72, and 96 h showed significant changes in its ultrastructures. Exposure to the pesticide after 24 h caused a slightly disarrayed condition in the double layered epithelial structure. Lymphatic spaces became more apparent, and a few chloride cells appeared which protruded toward the peripheral margin of the secondary lamellae. Chloride cells were exposed to the exterior by an apical pit. Pinocytosis was observed with marginal folds (MF) originating from the pillar and epithelial cells. Some vascular constrictions were also seen in the capillaries with erythrocytes. After 48 h exposure, the outer epithelial cells were stretched into a thin boundary wall and lymphatic spaces were engorged with plasma exudate. Chloride cells transversed the whole epithelium of the lamella and came into direct contact with lymphoid space and exterior to epithelial lining. Basement membrane of the capillaries became thicker. After 72 h a distorted lamellar epithelium ruptured in a few places allowing many spheroid bodies and some chloride cells come out. Marginal folds of pillar cells migrated into vascular spaces. Basement membrane of capillaries became thicker and blood channels were constricted causing vascular stasis. No erythrocytes were visible. Blood channels were filled with leukocytes and amoebocytes. After 96 h exposure to malathion narrowing of lymphatic spaces, proliferation of epithelial cells and development of pinocytotic vesicles from marginal folds of pillar cell flanges were observed. Only marginal blood channels maintained normal configuration. Vascular stasis due to thickening of the basal lamina were still evident in centrally located blood channels filled with leukocytes. Vascular stasis would likely cause a decrease in respiratory efficiency. This study has revealed that the gills of H. fossilis were affected by a sublethal dose of malathion. The ultrastructural damages to the gills were observed as early as at 24 h exposure, but the most severe damage occurred at 72 h exposure. However, signs of gill structure regeneration were seen in malathion-exposed fish after 96 h. 相似文献
