Two representative samples of surficial marine sediments have been studied, one from the northern Baltic Proper and the other from the Gulf of Finland. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined by gas chromatography on a fused silica capillary column, and six polyaromatic hydrocarbons were determined by gas chromatography-mass fragmentography. Hydrocarbons were extracted with a benzene-methanol mixture and ultrasonic agitation. The aliphatic hydrocarbons were tentatively identified by their retention times. The polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were identified on the basis of their retention times and mass fragmentograms by direct comparison with those of standard compounds. The aliphatic hydrocarbon contents ranged from 0,1 to 2,6 μg/g dry matter. In both samples there was a clear maximum at n-C17 and also a clear odd-carbon predominance. The PAH contents ranged from 4 to 120 ng/g dry matter. The PAH concentration was about 58 per cent higher in the sample from the Gulf of Finland than in the sample from the Baltic Proper. 相似文献

Three sediment samples LP (pool where logs are stored), LF (brook through landfill area), KN (Kaskesniemi) which is in Lake Pyh?selk? downstream from the mill, were taken from an old sawmill area and one from the unpolluted Lake H?yti?inen. The arsenite concentration was measured by GFAAS and two arsenite biosensing bacterial strains Pseudomonas fluorescens OS8 (pTPT31) and Escherichia coli MC1061 (pTOO31). The toxicity of sediment and pore water samples was determined by using luminescent bacteria (Flash test) and, further, whole sediment toxicity was measured using 10 days growth test and 50 days emergency test with midges (Chironomus riparius). With the flash test a lowered EC50 value was found only in sediment LF (EC50=0.17 v/v%). The Flash test indicated that all sediment samples taken from the sawmill area were highly toxic to bacteria, whereas growth and the emergence of chironomids showed no effects in other samples than LF. The midges tolerate well the contaminated environment. In contrast, bioavailability of arsenite of sediment samples KN and LF was quite high determined using the biosensor-strains in a direct contact assay. The bioavailable fraction of sediment LP was 6-10% out of the total arsenite concentration obtained with GFAAS (0.46-0.77 microg g-1 dw). The results show that the choice of analysis method grossly affects the outcome without any of the method giving an incorrect result. The applicability of a low resolution (8 cm-1) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) gas analyser with an absorption path length of 3 m was evaluated for the on-line monitoring of organic solvent mixture emissions in a flexographic ink manufacturing plant. The on-line monitoring revealed that the highest variations of solvent concentrations, up to three decades, occurred in the exhaust air. The FTIR analyser with a dynamic range of four decades covers well the concentration ranges typically found in the exhaust air and in the workroom air of ink manufacturing plants. The average emission rate of solvent mixture based on a sampling period of two days was 1.8 kg h-1 consisting of mainly ethanol (70%), ethyl acetate (15%) and propan-2-ol (11%). The detection limits of the analyser for the solvent compounds ranged from 0.3 to 4.3 mg m-3 and the measurement uncertainty was less than 10% in the concentration range of 8-15,000 mg m-3. These characteristics make the apparatus appropriate for most industrial hygiene applications. An FTIR spectrophotometer, equipped with an multipoint sampling unit, facilitates rapid identification of solvent components, real-time display of concentration data relevant to workroom air and environment monitoring as well as process control. Furthermore, the on-line concentration information enabled a rapid selection of representative sampling locations. We have studied particulate matter (PM) concentrations,PM10 and PM2.5, measured in an urban air qualitymonitoring network in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area during1997–1999. The data includes PM10 concentrationsmeasured at five locations (two urban traffic, one suburbantraffic, one urban background and one regional backgroundsite) and PM2.5 concentrations measured at twolocations (urban traffic and urban background sites). Theconcentrations of PM10 show a clear diurnal variation,as well as a spatial variation within the area. Bycontrast, both the spatial and temporal variation of thePM2.5 concentrations was moderate. We have analysedthe evolution of urban PM concentrations in terms of therelevant meteorological parameters in the course of oneselected peak pollution episode during 21–31 March, 1998.The meteorological variables considered included wind speedand direction, ambient temperature, precipitation, relativehumidity, atmospheric pressure at the ground level,atmospheric stability and mixing height. The elevated PMconcentrations during the 1998 March episode were clearlyrelated to conditions of high atmospheric pressure,relatively low ambient temperatures and low wind speeds inpredominantly stable atmospheric conditions. Bioaerosols (microbes, dust and endotoxins) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined in the working air of a drum composting plant treating source-separated catering waste. Different composting activities at the Oulu drum composting plant take place in their own units separated by modular design and constructions. Important implication of this is that the control room is a relatively clean working environment and the risk of exposure to harmful factors is low. However, the number of viable airborne microbes was high both in the biowaste receiving hall and in the drum composting hall. The concentration (geometric average) of total microbes was 21.8 million pcs/m3 in the biowaste receiving hall, 13.9 million pcs/m3 in the drum composting hall, and just 1.4 million pcs/m3 in the control room. Endotoxin concentrations were high in the biowaste receiving hall and in the drum composting hall. The average (arithmetic) endotoxin concentration was over the threshold value of 200 EU/m3 in both measurement locations. In all working areas, the average (arithmetic) dust concentrations were in a low range of 0.6-0.7 mg/m3, being below the Finnish threshold value of 5 mg/m3. In the receiving hall and drum composting hall, the concentrations of airborne microbes and endotoxins may rise to levels hazardous to health during prolonged exposure. It is advisable to use a respirator mask (class P3) in these areas. Detected volatile organic compounds were typical compounds of composting plants: carboxylic acids and their esters, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and terpenes. Concentrations of VOCs were much lower than the Finnish threshold limit values (Finnish TLVs), many of the quantified compounds exceeded their threshold odour concentrations (TOCs). Primary health effects due VOCs were not presumable at these concentrations but unpleasant odours may cause secondary symptoms such as nausea and hypersensitivity reactions. This situation is typical of composting plants where the workers are exposed to dozens of VOCs simultaneously. The odour units (OU/m3) were measured using olfactometer. The numbers were 23,000 OU/m3 at the output end of the composting drum and 6300 OU/m3 in the exhaust pipe. Inside the composting hall, the number of odour units was 500 and 560 OU/m3. 相似文献

Conversion of dissolved P by ferric sulfate into a particulate form sparingly available to algae was studied in 15 ditches in Finland using stand-alone dispensers for ferric sulfate administration. Ferric sulfate typically converted 60–70 % of dissolved P into iron-associated form, a process which required 250–650 kg per kg dissolved P. Mean cost was 160 EUR per kg P converted (range 20–400 EUR kg?1). The costs were lowest at sites characterized by high dissolved P concentrations and small catchment area. At best, the treatment was efficient and cost-effective, but to limit the costs and the risks, ferric sulfate dispensers should only be installed in small critical source areas. 相似文献

Forty clones of Betula pendula and 6 clones of Betula pubescens, originating from southern and central Finland, were ranked in order of ozone sensitivity according to visible injuries, growth and leaf senescense under low ozone exposure. The plants were fumigated in natural climatic conditions using an open-air exposure system during two growing seasons. Control plants were grown under ambient air, and the elevated-ozone exposures were 1.6x the ambient in 1994 and 1.7x the ambient in 1995. The differences in ozone sensitivity among clones were large. Ozone tolerance was related to thicker leaves and higher stomatal density as compared to sensitive clones. Ultrastructural ozone-induced symptoms were found in chloroplasts of sensitive clones. Increased number of visibly injured leaves on fumigated plants was correlated with reduced leaf formation, foliage area, shoot dry wt and number of stomata, and increased yellowing of leaves. The results suggest that a considerable proportion of birch trees, showing high sensitivity to ozone, are at risk if ambient ozone exposures increase. 相似文献

A simple method for correcting for the loading effects of aethalometer data is presented. The formula BC(CORRECTED) = (1 + k x ATN) x BC(NONCORRECTED), where ATN is the attenuation and BC is black carbon, was used for correcting aethalometer data obtained from measurements at three different sites: a subway station in Helsinki, an urban background measurement station in Helsinki, and a rural station in Hyyti?l? in central Finland. The BC data were compared with simultaneously measured aerosol volume concentrations (V). After the correction algorithm, the BC-to-V ratio remained relatively stable between consequent filter spots, which can be regarded as indirect evidence that the correction algorithm works. The k value calculated from the outdoor sites had a clear seasonal cycle that could be explained by darker aerosol in winter than in summer. When the contribution of BC to the total aerosol volume was high, the k factor was high and vice versa. In winter, the k values at all wavelengths were very close to that obtained from the subway station data. In summer, the k value was wavelength dependent and often negative. When the k value is negative, the noncorrected BC concentrations overestimated the true concentrations. 相似文献

The impact of Pb contamination was tested to five hydrolytic (beta-glucosidase, beta-xylosidase, beta-cellobiosidase, alpha-glucosidase and sulphatase) and two ligninolytic (manganese peroxidase, MnP and laccase) enzyme activities in the humus layer in the forest soil. The ability of eight selected litter-degrading fungi to grow and produce extracellular enzymes in the heavily Pb (40 g Pb of kg ww soil(-1)) contaminated and non-contaminated soil in the non-sterile conditions was also studied. The Pb content in the test soil was close to that of the shooting range at H?lv?l? (37 g Pb of kg ww soil(-1)) in Southern Finland. The fungi were Agaricus bisporus, Agrocybe praecox, Gymnopus peronatus, Gymnopilus sapineus, Mycena galericulata, Gymnopilus luteofolius, Stropharia aeruginosa and Stropharia rugosoannulata. The Pb contamination (40 g Pb of kg ww soil(-1)) was deleterious to all five studied hydrolytic enzyme activities after five weeks of incubation. All five hydrolytic enzyme activities were significantly higher in the soil than in the extract of the soil indicating that a considerable part of enzymes were particle bound in the soils. Hydrolytic enzyme activities were higher in the non-contaminated soil than in the Pb contaminated soil. Fungal inocula increased the hydrolytic enzyme activities beta-cellobiosidase and beta-glucosidase in non-contaminated soils. All five hydrolytic enzyme activities were similar with fungi and without fungi in the Pb contaminated soil. This was in line that Pb contamination (40 g Pb of kg ww soil(-1)) depressed the growth of all fungi compared to those grown without Pb in the soil. Laccase and MnP activities were low in both Pb contaminated and non-contaminated soil cultures. MnP activities were higher in soil cultures containing Pb than without Pb. Our results showed that Pb in the shooting ranges decreased fungal growth and microbial functioning in the soil. 相似文献
