Summary The Dominican Republic and other Caribbean countries face serious challenges to their natural resource base. In recent years
the government of the Dominican Republic has taken major steps toward the development and implementation of a comprehensive
plan for national natural resources management. This plan is called Plan Sierra. An important component of this plan is the
outline of actions for carrying out an environmental education programme within the country. This demonstrates a commitment
to fulfill Recommendation No. 96 of the Stockholm Conference in a way that could become a model for other Latin American nations.

methods, environmental education methodology, resident outdoor programming, and natural resources development. He is also
involved in international research and development, especially in the Caribbean Basin.
Robert E. Roth is Chairman/Professor in the Division of Environmental Education, School of Natural Resources, The Ohio State
University. Dr Roth received a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management, a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Science Education,
a Master's degree in Conservation Education from The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. in Environmental Education from
The University of Wisconsin. he came to OSU in 1969 and since that time has designed and institutionalized the only academic
unit in the US that offers both well developed undergraduate and graduate programmes in Environmental Communications, Education
and Interpretation and has published over 40 works in the field. He has been instrumental in implementing a growing international

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of reductions of reactive organic gases (ROG) and NOx emissions on short-term O3 and NO2 concentrations and annual average NO2 concentrations in the California South Coast Air Basin. Short-term air quality predictions were obtained by applying the Systems Applications Airshed Model to summer O3 and autumn NO2 episodes. Effects of emission controls on annual NO2 concentrations were estimated using CDM and a new parcel tracking model NOXTRAK. Results for the summer O3 episode indicate that ROG emission reduction in an effective means for reducing peak O3 concentrations. NOx emission reduction imposed in addition to ROG emission reductions are counterproductive in reducing peak O3 concentrations. The modeling results also suggest that attainment of the 1-h federal O3 standard requires ROG emission reductions on the order of 80% from 1987 levels. Results for the autumn NO2 episode indicate that NOx emission reductions approximating those recommended in a proposed Air Quality Management Plan (about 22%) will result in only small (about 5%) reductions in the peak NO2 concentrations. ROG emission reduction may be more effective than NOx emission reduction in reducing the peak NO2 concentration. For the episode studied, a reduction of 36% in ROG emissions is estimated to result in a reduction in peak NO2 concentrations commensurate with that required to attain the 1-h state NO2 standard. Model calculations also indicate that the federal NO2 standard may not be meet by 1987 at one or two stations, but may blosely approached. 相似文献

A study of 173 Western New York State obstetricians was undertaken to study referral patterns for second-trimester amniocentesis in 1974–1978. Referral patterns were analysed in relation to obstetrician age, religion, board certification, hospital affiliation and practice location. Forty-seven per cent of the obstetricians had never referred a patient for amniocentesis. Those referring were overall younger than those not referring and were significantly more often board certified. Obstetrician religion was significantly related to referral with fewer Catholic obstetricians referring. Hospital affiliation (teaching versus non-teaching) and obstetrician practice location (urban versus rural) were not important factors after controlling for religion and board certification. Obstetrician factors account for a small but important part of the variability in referral, and other factors, such as cost and access to laboratory and obstetric care need further investigation. 相似文献

In large samples of trees > or = 1 cm dbh (more than 1 million trees and 3000 species), in six lowland tropical forests on three continents, we assigned species with >30 individuals to one of six classes of stature at maturity (SAM). We then compared the proportional representation of understory trees (1-2 cm dbh) among these classes. The understory of the three Asian sites was predominantly composed of the saplings of large-canopy trees whereas the African and American sites were more richly stocked with trees of the smaller SAM classes. Differences in class representation were related to taxonomic families that were present exclusively in one continent or another. Families found in the Asian plots but not in the American plot (e.g., Dipterocarpaceae, Fagaceae) were predominantly species of the largest SAM classes, whereas families exclusive to the American plots (e.g., Melastomataceae sensu stricto, Piperaceae, and Malvaceae [Bombacacoidea]) were predominantly species of small classes. The African plot was similar to Asia in the absence of those American families rich in understory species, while similar to America in lacking the Asian families rich in canopy species. The numerous understory species of Africa were chiefly derived from families shared with Asia and/or America. The ratio of saplings (1-2 cm dbh) to conspecific canopy trees (>40 cm dbh) was lower in American plots than in the Asian plots. Possible explanations for these differences include phenology, moisture and soil fertility regimes, phyletic constraints, and the role of early successional plants in forest development. These results demonstrate that tropical forests that appear similar in tree number, basal area, and the family taxonomy of canopy trees nonetheless differ in ecological structure in ways that may impact the ecology of pollinators, dispersers, and herbivores and might reflect fundamental differences in canopy tree regeneration. 相似文献

In this paper, we review those data which have recently become available for brominated flame retardants (particularly the brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)) in samples from the European environment. Environmental compartments studied comprise the atmosphere, sediments and soils, sewage sludges, and a variety of biological samples and food chains. This is currently a very active research area, and we cite over 70 studies reported in the literature during 2003-04. Findings include that the input of BDEs (especially BDE209) to the Baltic Sea by atmospheric deposition now exceeds that of PCBs by a factor of almost 40 times. Sewage sludge samples from both industrial and background locations show concentrations of BDEs, HBCD and tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A) that are of a similar order, indicating that the major source is from diffuse leaching from products into wastewater streams from users, households and industries generally. Point-sources from industries using BFRs (e.g. the textile industry) also generate local hot-spots. Sediment core studies identified the presence of two of the three PBDE formulations. The penta-mix formulation was clearly present from the beginning of the 1970s, but the deca-mix only appeared in the late 1970s. BDE183, BDE209 and HBCD were detected in peregrine falcons from Sweden and other birds feeding on terrestrial food chains. BDEs are found widely distributed in fish, including those from high mountain lakes in Europe, as a consequence of long-range atmospheric transport and deposition. A temporal trend study in archived freeze-dried mussels from the Seine estuary, France, indicated an exponential increase in BDE concentrations during the period 1982-1993, which levelled off in 1999 and 2001 and then began to decline after 2002. HBCD was detected in liver and blubber samples from harbour seals and harbour porpoises from the Wadden and North Seas, though very few animals yielded positive values for TBBP-A. There are difficulties in comparing data on summation operatorBDE from studies in which different suites of BDE congeners have been determined, and we suggest a common suite which will allow the study of all three commercial PBDE formulations. 相似文献
