Lead has been mined in the Old Lead Belt region of southeastern Missouri, USA since the early 1700s. Mining operations ceased totally in 1972. Since no other major industries were associated with the region, an investigation was initiated to study the long-term environmental effects of lead mining activities on the water quality sediments and biota otarea receiving streams. The principal study area was Flat River Creek,. which drained the major mining operations of the region. The findings of this study indicated the water of the lower Flat River Creek below the mining elevation contained elevated levels of lead, zinc, calcium and magnesium. The sediments and biota of the same stream area were also found to contain significantly higher levels of lead and zinc as well as copper and cadmium. Algae, crayfish and minnows were all found to have concentrated these metals. The studies indicated that some type of abandonment plan must be developed for the control and treatment of heavy metal pollution for mining operations on a continuing basis. 相似文献

Trophic relationships are the determining factor of biological equilibrium, as existence and abundance of any population depend on the ratio nutrition-predation. This paper is the first of a series devoted to the study of the trophic position of euphausiid crustaceans in the equatorial and south-tropical Pacific Ocean; it defines the role of a pelagic group in its biotope, suggests methods in trophic studies, and shows that analytical research on limited subjects is a reliable way to reveal more general features applying to the whole pelagic world. Until now, the literature dealing with nutrition of euphausiids in most cases has provided only qualitative lists of items found in the stomachs; the drawbacks of this kind of investigation are that only a small part of the stomach content is recognizable in this way and, moreover, that the remains identified belong only to the food consumed which had the most resistant structures. In order to study the trophic levels of species, it has been necessary to take into account the whole stomach content, to establish if its origin was plant or animal or both. Binocular examination of the dissected stomachs made it possible to discriminate between phyto- and zooplankton. More than 5000 specimens have been examined in this way, each stomach being named V if more than 80% of its content is phytoplankton, A if this same percentage is animal food, VA if phyto- and zooplankton are of comparable importance; the trophic level of each species has been defined as the percentage Σ [A+(VA/2)], which measures the part of animal material among the total food. Although zooplankton appears on the whole to be more important than phytoplankton as food for tropical euphasiids, all the trophic levels are observed among the 16 species studied, from phytophagous to strictly carnivorous. 相似文献

The role of euphausiids in the food webs of the Intertropical Pacific Ocean is defined through analysis of their nutrition, vertical distributions and migrations, and their utilization by pelagic predators. It is suggested that the abundance of the group, the extensive vertical migrations of many species and the fact that feeding takes place mainly in subsurface layers, result in a leading role of euphausiids in energy transfer between different bathymetric levels. For night-time feeding predators, they represent a noticeable food source only in the 0 to 300 m water layer, as 97% of the euphausiid biomass concentrates in this layer at night. In the daytime, only the smaller specimens (chiefly genus Stylocheiron), accounting for 10 to 15% of the whole biomass of the group, remain available for epipelagic (0 to 400 m) predators, larger individuals dwelling deeper. Euphausiids account for 8 to 10% of the food ingested by micronektonic fishes, but the species are not the same for different categories of fishes. Migrating fishes caught by pelagic trawls, more or less connected with the deep scattering layer, feed on migrating species in subsurface layers at night as well as in deeper layers during the daytime, and on non-migrating species inhabiting shallower and intermediate layers. On the other hand, fishes which comprise the prey of large long-line tunas, which are not caught by trawls because they are fast swimmers, feed almost solely on species which remain above 400 m in the daytime. These results suggest a certain degree of independance between the trophic webs which concern, on the one hand, epipelagic ichthyofauna (including tuna), and, on the other hand, migrating and deep-living faunas. Migrating populations are able to feed at night upon subsurface organisms, a part of this resource being then transmitted during the day to the deep-living fauna; but the epipelagic ichthyofauna, with a feeding activity restricted to light hours, has few possibilities to benefit from the migrating or deepliving biomass. Therefore, energy transfers seem to be intense only from subsurface (0 to 400 m) to deeper layers. From a more general point of view, these investigations suggest that, in the pelagic system, vertical distributions and migrations, and feeding rhythms, are the main factors determining the structure of the food webs. 相似文献

Monitoring of cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS) carried out at Anglian Water’s Broadholme sewage treatment plant (STP) is described. The method deployed used headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) and the addition of isotopically labelled cVMS to correct for partitioning in samples containing high levels of particulate and dissolved organic carbon. The method was capable of measuring cVMS in raw sewage samples, with recoveries of 80%, 85% and 71% respectively, for D4, D5 and D6. The limit of quantification was 0.2 μg L−1 for all three substances. Recoveries close to 100% were observed for all cVMS spiked into treated effluent (LOQ = 0.01 μg L−1). Despite the volatile nature of cVMS and its ubiquitous presence in the ambient atmosphere, the methods deployed showed excellent recoveries, reproducibility and quantification limits. A distinct diurnal variation in cVMS concentration, probably linked with the use of personal care products was observed for raw sewage but not in treated sewage effluent. The estimated per capita consumption of D5 (∼2.7 mg cap−1 d−1) derived for the population served by this plant was significantly lower than that derived in the Environment Agency (UK) risk assessment (11.6 mg cap−1 d−1). The cVMS were highly removed during sewage treatment with efficiencies greater than 98%. The methods and findings of this pilot study can be used as the basis for future studies on the fate of cVMS substances in STPs. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments suggest that strong acids promote formation of enhanced levels of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and organic aerosols may contribute to the health impacts of fine PM. We report results from examining hourly speciated fine particle data for evidence of ambient aerosol acidity-catalyzed SOA formation, as indicated by larger increases in the concentrations of organic aerosol mass occurring on days and in locations where more acidic aerosol (lower NH4+/SO4= molar ratios) exists. Data sets from the southeastern U.S. were examined for which hourly acidity of PM2.5 aerosols could be estimated, and for which hourly organic carbon (OC) content had been measured simultaneously. Within-day organic aerosol changes during selected periods were statistically related to concurrent aerosol acidity levels estimated from nitrate-corrected ammonium-to-sulfate ratios. Data from the Look Rock, TN, TVA/IMPROVE site for mid-July to mid-August 2004 showed average compositions frequently as acidic as NH4HSO4, however, no apparent increases in OC levels with increasing aerosol acidity were observed, even when [OC] changes were compared with time-delayed aerosol acidity estimates. SEARCH network data (2003–2004) for rural Centreville, AL (CTR) and Yorkville, GA (YRK) sites were also examined. Warm-season acidity levels were higher at CTR than at YRK, and daytime levels exceeded those at night at both sites. At the YRK site no consistent positive correlations were found between changes in OC or TC levels and aerosol acidity, even with time lags up to 6 h. Aerosol acidity at this site, however, is relatively low due to nearby agricultural sources of NH3. In contrast, during selected periods from April to October 2004, at CTR, 6-h lagged OC changes were weakly correlated with daytime, nitrate-corrected NH4+/SO4= molar ratios, but distinguishing this apparent relationship from meteorological effects on measured OC levels is challenging. 相似文献

Reproductive and oxidative stress biomarkers have been recommended as tools to assess the health of aquatic organisms. Though validated in the laboratory, there are few studies that tie a change in gene expression to adverse reproductive or population outcomes in the field. This paper looked at 17 streams with varying degrees of urbanization to assess the use of biomarkers associated with reproduction or stress in predicting reproductive success of fathead minnows. In addition, the relationship between biomarkers and water quality measures in streams with varying degrees of urbanization was examined. Liver vitellogenin mRNA was correlated with reproduction within a period of 11 d prior to sampling irrespective of habitat, but its correlation with egg output declined at 12 d and beyond indicating its usefulness as a short-term biomarker but its limits as a biomarker of total reproductive output. Stress biomarkers such as glutathione S-transferase may be better correlated with factors affecting reproduction over a longer term. There was a significant correlation between GST mRNA and a variety of anthropogenic pollutants. There was also an inverse correlation between glutathione S-transferase and the amount of the watershed designated as wetland. Egg production over the 21-d was negatively correlated with the amount of urbanization and positively correlated to wetland habitats. This study supports the development of multiple biomarkers linking oxidative stress and other non-reproductive endpoints to changes in aquatic habitats will be useful for predicting the health of fish populations and identifying the environmental factors that may need mitigation for sustainable population management. 相似文献

Predicting ecosystem effects is of crucial importance in a world at threat from natural and human-mediated change. Here we propose an ecologically defensible representation of an ecosystem that facilitates predictive modelling. The representation has its roots in the early trophic and energetic theory of ecosystem dynamics and more recent functional ecology and network theory. Using the arable ecosystem of the UK as an example, we show that the representation allows simplification from the many interacting plant and invertebrate species, typically present in arable fields, to a more tractable number of trophic-functional types. Our compound hypothesis is that “trophic-functional types of plants and invertebrates can be used to explain the structure, diversity and dynamics of arable ecosystems”. The trophic-functional types act as containers for individuals, within an individual-based model, sharing similar trophic behaviour and traits of biomass transformation. Biomass, or energy, flows between the types and this allows the key ecological properties of individual abundance and body mass, at each trophic height, to be followed through simulations. Our preliminary simulation results suggest that the model shows great promise. The simulation output for simple ecosystems, populated with realistic parameter values, is consistent with current laboratory observations and provides exciting indications that it could reproduce field scale phenomena. The model also produces output that links the individual, population and community scales, and may be analysed and tested using community, network (food web) and population dynamic theory. We show that we can include management effects, as perturbations to parameter values, for modelling the effects of change and indicating management responses to change. This model will require robust analysis, testing and validation, and we discuss how we will achieve this in the future. 相似文献

such as birth rates, mortality rates, and sex ratios in zones of different boron content in drinking water. Results: After necessary adjustments, men living in municipalities with more than 0.30 mg/L of boron in drinking water had elevated
but not significant boron blood levels compared with those living in municipalities with boron water levels of less than 0.30 mg/L
(159.1 versus 123.0 ng/g; p > 0.05). The standardized birth ratio adjusted for the reference geographic zone and calendar time period was 1.07 and 1.28
in the low and high (>0.3 mg/L) boron content municipalities, respectively. The birth rate in municipalities with high boron
content in drinking water was higher than that of the reference geographic zone and of the French general population (p < 10-4). The standardized mortality ratio adjusted for the reference geographic zone and calendar time period was 0.94 and 0.92
in the low and high boron content municipalities, respectively. The mortality rate in municipalities with high boron content
in drinking water was less than that of the reference geographic zone and of the French general population (p < 10-3). No statistical difference was noted in the male–female sex ratios between the different municipality zones (p = 0.45). Conclusions: The results of this study do not support the idea of a deleterious effect of boron on human health, at the boron water level
contents found in this specific region. In fact, there is a tendency toward a beneficial effect with low-dose environmental
