The influence of air humidity on the sampling efficiency of Amberlite XAD porous polymers and activated charcoal was studied by determining the recovery of various organics at 20% and 85% relative humidity. The sampling efficiency of XAD-7 was found to decrease with increasing relative humidity, while the sampling efficiency of XAD-2 and activated charcoal was relatively unaffected for the compounds studied. A common explanation for hunting in groups is that doing so yields a greater per capita caloric benefit than hunting solitarily.
This is logical for social carnivores, which rely exclusively on meat for energy, but arguably not for omnivores, which obtain
calories from either plant or animal matter. The common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, is one of the few true omnivores that regularly hunts in groups. Studies to date have yielded conflicting data regarding
the payoffs of group hunting in chimpanzees. Here, we interpret chimpanzee hunting patterns using a new approach. In contrast
to the classical assumption that hunting with others maximizes per capita caloric intake, we propose that group hunting is
favored because it maximizes an individual’s likelihood of obtaining important micronutrients that may be found in small quantities
of meat. We describe a mathematical model demonstrating that group hunting may evolve when individuals can obtain micronutrients
more frequently by hunting in groups than by hunting solitarily, provided that group size is below a certain threshold. Twenty
five years of data from Gombe National Park, Tanzania are consistent with this prediction. We propose that our ‘meat-scrap’
hypothesis is a unifying approach that may explain group hunting by chimpanzees and other social omnivores. 相似文献

How predators vary search patterns in response to prey predictability is poorly known. For example, marine invertebrates may
be predictable but of low energy value, while fish may be of higher energy value but unpredictable at large (pelagic schools)
or small (solitary benthics) spatial scales. We investigated the search patterns of the thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia), an Arctic seabird feeding on invertebrates, pelagic fish, or benthic fish. Foraging ranges at the Coats Island colony are
generally smaller (<240 min per trip) than at larger colonies, and many birds specialize in foraging tactics and diet. Underwater
search times for benthic fish were higher than for pelagic fish or invertebrates while above-water search times for pelagic
fish were higher than for benthic fish or invertebrates. There were few stops during trips. Total trip time, flying time,
number of flights, and number of dives were intercorrelated and increased with prey energy content, suggesting that longer
trips involved fewer prey encounters due to selection of higher-quality, but rarer, prey items. Flight times were not Lévy-distributed
and seabirds may have used area-restricted searches. The high degree of specialization, apparent absence of information center
effects, and reduced above-water searching times may be linked to the relatively small colony size and the resulting short
commuting distances to feeding areas, leading to greater prey predictability. We concluded that prey predictability over various

ABSTRACT: Multivariate analyses and correlations revealed strong relations between watershed and riparian‐corridor land cover, and reach‐scale habitat versus fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages in 38 warmwater streams in eastern Wisconsin. Watersheds were dominated by agricultural use, and ranged in size from 9 to 71 km2 Watershed land cover was summarized from satellite‐derived data for the area outside a 30‐m buffer. Riparian land cover was interpreted from digital orthophotos within 10‐, 10‐to 20‐, and 20‐to 30‐m buffers. Reach‐scale habitat, fish, and macroinvertebrates were collected in 1998 and biotic indices calculated. Correlations between land cover, habitat, and stream‐quality indicators revealed significant relations at the watershed, riparian‐corridor, and reach scales. At the watershed scale, fish diversity, intolerant fish and EPT species increased, and Hilsenhoff biotic index (HBI) decreased as percent forest increased. At the riparian‐corridor scale, EPT species decreased and HBI increased as riparian vegetation became more fragmented. For the reach, EPT species decreased with embeddedness. Multivariate analyses further indicated that riparian (percent agriculture, grassland, urban and forest, and fragmentation of vegetation), watershed (percent forest) and reach‐scale characteristics (embeddedness) were the most important variables influencing fish (IBI, density, diversity, number, and percent tolerant and insectivorous species) and macroinvertebrate (HBI and EPT) communities. 相似文献

Exact formulas for the probability of extinction or change in the conservation status of species are described for data based on frequency of sighting. These formulas generalize an expression previously described for the probability of extinction from (binary) sighting data. The formulas will be used in contexts where sightings are recorded as frequencies, such as when observations are aggregated in time. We argue that computing the probability of extinction or change in conservation status will be most useful for setting conservation priorities and in screening large data sets contained in museum and herbarium collections and in biological resource inventories. 相似文献

Summary Male blue-winged warblers (Vermivora pinus) sing two distinctly different song types (I and II). Type II songs from eastern New York and western Massachusetts, USA, are different (Fig. 1), and during playback experiments males respond stronger to local than to foreign songs (Fig. 2). Type I songs are more stereotyped geographically (Fig. 1), and males do not differentiate between local and foreign Type I songs (Fig. 3).
