We present a hitherto unknown prey perception strategy in bats: Myotis nattereri (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) is able to perceive prey by echolocation within a few centimeters of echo-cluttering vegetation,
by using frequency-modulated search signals of very large bandwidth (up to 135 kHz). We describe the species’ search behavior
and echolocation repertoire from the field and from experiments in a flight tent. In the field, bats varied signal parameters
in relation to their distance from vegetation and usually flew close to vegetation. In the flight tent, M. nattereri detected and localized prey by echolocation alone as close as 5 cm from vegetation. Apparently, the bats were able to tolerate
some overlap between prey and clutter echoes. Passive prey cues (vision, olfaction, prey-generated sounds) were not used in
prey perception. The bats selected prey by size. The animals performed aerial catches and produced approach sequences typical
for aerial hawking bats, but were able to do so within a few centimeters of the substrate. M. nattereri thus has access to silent, suspended prey very close to vegetation (e.g., spiders, and caterpillars on threads).

Social and mating system of cooperatively breeding laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
DNA fingerprinting was combined with field observations over four breeding seasons to investigate the social structure and
mating system of the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). Groups comprised a socially dominant pair and up to six helpers of either sex. Helpers were always recruited from young
hatched in the group. Territorial inheritance, which is a feature of other cooperative breeders and an oft-cited benefit of
philopatry, did not occur. Helpers only attained dominant status in an established group by dispersing into a vacant dominant
position in that group. However, helpers could also form new groups by excising a new territory, often through a ”budding”
process. The mating system was overwhelmingly monogamous. There were no cases of extra-group parentage in a sample of 140
nestlings; within groups of three or more birds, dominance predicted parentage almost perfectly (99.2% of 129 nestlings),
irrespective of whether helpers in the group were related to one or both dominant birds. This is contrary to predictions from
models of reproductive skew, possibly because they currently fail to incorporate the willingness of females to share reproduction
among males.

Male willow warblers have song repertoires which vary in complexity along several dimensions. We examined whether female choice,
as measured by date of pairing, was based on these song characteristics in 4 different years. Pairing date was negatively
correlated with song repertoire size in 1 year, and with song versatility in another year, but there was no consistent effect
of any song characteristic on pairing throughout the years or in the pooled sample. The variable that best explained how soon
a male pairs is male arrival date (only males that had settled territories before the first female arrived were considered
in the analysis). This correlation is consistently significant in all years. This is most parsimoniously interpreted as females
choosing some habitat characteristic in the same way that males do. A small percentage of males (8.3%) attracted and paired
with a second female. The likelihood of becoming polygynous was not explained by any measured song characteristic, but it
was related to arrival date: early males were more likely to pair with two females. Males with large repertoires fledged more
young in their primary nests, and there was a trend for the offspring of these males to have a greater probability of being
recruited into the population. In conclusion, the results show that in most years there is no sexual selection by female preference
on song characteristics, although the data on reproductive success is consistent with the idea of repertoire size being an
indicator of male quality.

In the meerkat (Suricata suricatta), a cooperative mongoose, pups follow potential feeders while the group is foraging and emit incessant calls when soliciting
food from them. In contrast to a ’stationary’ brood of chicks, in which nestlings are fed at a fixed location, meerkat pups
are ’mobile’ and become spread out. The question arises whether meerkat pups that experience different constraints to those
facing chicks have evolved similar begging strategies. This paper describes the vocalisations that meerkat pups emit in the
context of begging and investigates the influence of these calls on food allocation by older group members and on the behaviour
of littermates. Meerkat pups use two types of calls when soliciting food from a potential feeder. The most common is a ’repeat’
call, which pups emit continuously when following an older forager over several hours a day. In addition, when a potential
feeder finds a prey item, the pups next to it emit a bout of calls with increased calling rate, amplitude and fundamental
frequency, termed ’high-pitched’ calls. Observations, together with playback experiments, showed that more prey was allocated
to pups that called longer and more intensely. The pup closest to a feeder was almost always fed. The probability of emitting
high-pitched calls did not depend on the time since a pup had received food, and the change from repeat to high-pitched calls
occurred suddenly. The main function of the high-pitched call, therefore, does not appear to be to signal a pup’s hunger state.
More likely, the two calls, in the context of begging, may be an adaptation to energetic constraints in a mobile feeding system.
Pups, which are dispersed during foraging, may emit repeat calls over long periods to prevent potential feeders from eating
all the prey themselves. At the moment a potential feeder finds prey, pups may give the more intense high-pitched calls to
direct feeders to bring the food item to them and not to a littermate. Therefore, unlike the stationary feeding system where
chicks emit one type of begging call when the feeder approaches the nest, meerkats, with a mobile feeding system, have evolved
two discrete types of vocalisations in the context of begging.

Training Captive-Bred or Translocated Animals to Avoid Predators 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11

Abstract: Animal reintroductions and translocations are potentially important interventions to save species from extinction, but most are unsuccessful. Mortality due to predation is a principal cause of failure. Animals that have been isolated from predators, either throughout their lifetime or over evolutionary time, may no longer express appropriate antipredator behavior. For this reason, conservation biologists are beginning to include antipredator training in pre-release preparation procedures. We describe the evolutionary and ontogenetic circumstances under which antipredator behavior may degenerate or be lost, and we use principles from learning theory to predict which elements can be enhanced or recovered by training. The empirical literature demonstrates that training can improve antipredator skills, but the effectiveness of such interventions is influenced by a number of constraints. We predict that it will be easier to teach animals to cope with predators if they have experienced ontogenetic isolation than if they have undergone evolutionary isolation. Similarly, animals should learn more easily if they have been evolutionarily isolated from some rather than all predators. Training to a novel predator may be more successful if a species has effective responses to similar predators. In contrast, it may be difficult to teach proper avoidance behavior, or to introduce specialized predator-specific responses, if appropriate motor patterns are not already present. We conclude that pre-release training has the potential to enhance the expression of preexisting antipredator behavior. Potential training techniques involve classical conditioning procedures in which animals learn that model predators are predictors of aversive events. However, wildlife managers should be aware that problems, such as the emergence of inappropriate responses, may arise during such training. 相似文献

Demographic Forecasting in Koala Conservation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Abstract: The koala currently needs conservation intervention. There is clear evidence of decline in many populations, but the existence of other stable or expanding populations offers the possibility of a variety of creative solutions to their conservation problems. The 1998 National Koala Conservation Strategy emphasizes the need to obtain demographic information and to use this information to assess management options for koalas. We need accurate diagnoses of the status of koala populations and forecasts of their demographic future with and without particular management actions. In a qualitative fashion, this process has been undertaken many times on a local and national scale. Quantitative demographic forecasting tools are increasingly available, and koala management could benefit from their application both at the scale of individual populations and more broadly. There is already a considerable body of suitable data on the dispersal, effects of normal and catastrophic environmental variation on reproduction and survival, and on the effects of habitat change. Demographic forecasting, however, is hampered because the full suite of information is rarely available from a single population. In two Queensland populations, retrospective population viability analyses provided forecasts that were in agreement with observed population trends. Work is needed to determine whether data from one population can be applied to other populations. Models can then be developed to make projections at a multipopulation level on the basis of local population dynamics and dispersal. Certain koala populations, because of their long history of study, offer the opportunity to test demographic models retrospectively. These tests will not only aid in fine-tuning the models for koala biology and data but will also assist with the more general process of validating the models. 相似文献

The reproductive strategies of two gammaridean amphipod species, Gammarus wilkitzkii and Apherusa glacialis, that permanently inhabit the Arctic sea ice were investigated. G. wilkitzkii reaches sexual maturity at an age of 2 years and produces 128 ± 54 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. Mating takes place during fall and winter, and the development of the large eggs (0.60 to 0.80 mm diam.) lasts 6 to 7 months.
The sex ratio of G. wilkitzkii was dominated by males in a proportion of 1.5:1. In vivo studies showed that juveniles are released in batches from the brood
pouches of the females during April and May. A. glacialis reaches sexual maturity at the age of 1 year and produces 555 ± 151 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. The eggs are between 0.18 and 0.23 mm in diameter, and are the smallest known for gammaridean amphipods. Eggs are kept in
packages of two to eight in the brood pouches of females. The sex ratio of A. glacialis was dominated by females in a proportion of 3:1. The high fecundity of both amphipod species, the release of juveniles in
batches over a period of time, a high proportion of females (A. glacialis), and an elongated life-span with multiple spawnings (G. wilkitzkii) are discussed as possible adaptations to the specific and highly variable conditions under Arctic sea ice.

Effect of salinity on the feeding rate and parthenogenetic reproduction of asexual females of the cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin was studied. Short-term (10 h) grazing experiments were conducted using Isochrysis galbana as feed at 5, 17, 25 and 30 psu salinity. Gut pigment concentration showed a significantly higher rate of feeding at lower
salinities. Survival, growth, maturity attainment and neonate production of asexual females reared in the above four test
salinities indicated preference for lower salinities (5 and 17 psu). The mean size of adult females decreased from 909 to
593 μm, mean life span from 24 to 5 d, mean neonate production from 12 to 2 and mean size of neonates from 434 to 400 μm as
the salinity increased from 5 to 30 psu. Salinity variations also affected the size and age of primiparous females. Resting
egg formation and sexual reproduction did not occur at the tested salinities. The results indicate that D. celebensis is adapted to low saline, estuarine environments.

The pathway for the flow of salt-marsh grass production into marsh food-webs is still not well defined. We compared the abilities
of three marsh macroinvertebrates [salt marsh periwinkles, Littoraria irrorata (Say) (=Littorina irrorata), salt-marsh coffee-bean snails, Melampus bidentatus (Say); and a talitrid amphipod, Uhlorchestia spartinophila Bounsfield and Heard] to access standing-dead leaves of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora Loisel). The invertebrates were incubated with naturally-decaying leaves, and the rates of removal of organic matter and
living fungal biomass (ergosterol) were measured. The impact of invertebrate activity upon fungal growth rates was measured
as rates of fungal-membrane synthesis (incorporation of radioacetate into ergosterol). The removal rates of organic leaf biomass
per mg individual biomass were highest for amphipods (700 μg mg−1 d−1) and lowest for periwinkles (90 μg mg−1 d−1), but the relatively large biomass of the snails made their removal rates per individual greater than those of amphipods.
Net removal of ergosterol by all three invertebrates was >50% for yellow-brown (early-decay) leaf blades. For fully-brown
(advanced-decay) blades, >50% removal of ergosterol was found only for periwinkles; exposure to coffee-bean snails and amphipods
resulted in a net ergosterol reduction of ≤20%. The lower net reduction of living fungal biomass by coffee-bean snails and
amphipods may have been due to fungal-growth stimulation (2.3-fold stimulation in coffee-bean snails and 1.5-fold stimulation
in amphipods). Grazing by periwinkles did not stimulate fungal growth, possibly because of its high intensity. Grazing by
these three salt-marsh shredders may affect marsh-grass shoot-decay in different ways. Periwinkles may abbreviate the period
of fungal production, and incorporate the decaying material relatively quickly into snail biomass and fecal-pellet rain to
the sediments. Coffee-bean snails and amphipods may enhance and prolong fungal production, along with the formation of fecal-pellet
rain. All three invertebrates fed preferentially on leaf blades rather than leaf sheaths, and feeding rates of gastropods
were higher during the night than during the day.
