Anaerobic digester failure due to entry of inhibitors or sudden changes in the feed substrate concentration may be encompassed beneficially by applying optimal control theory. An almost proportional relationship between the dilution rate and the methane production rate leads to a simple suboptimal control law with only minor loss in performance, after the occurrence of the above mentioned events.  相似文献

Five local ecological types based on vegetative communities and two landscape types based on groups of communities, were identified by integrating landform, soil, and vegetation components using multivariate techniques. Elevation and several topographic and soil variables were highly correlated with types of both scales. Landscape ecological types based only on landform and soil variables without vegetation did not correspond with types developed using vegetation. Models developed from these relationships could allow classification and mapping of extensive areas using geographic information systems.  相似文献

Soil ingestion is an important exposure pathway for contaminants that are not otherwise very mobile in the environment. Health of both humans and animals can be affected. This paper summarizes the literature and recommends models and probabilistic parameter values for risk assessment applications. Models of the pathway require estimates of the amounts of soil ingested, the concentration of contaminants relative to the original soil, and the bioavailability in the gut of the contaminants ingested with soil. Using a lead-contaminated sandbox as an example, the modelling recommendations suggest that a child typically may consume 50 mg d–1 of the sandbox soil, the soil ingested will have a tenfold higher lead concentration than the original soil, and the lead will be as bioavailable as if ingested as inorganic lead in water.The Canadian Government right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged.  相似文献

Methods derived from time-series analysis are proposed for processing monitoring data. The necessity for the use of these methods is demonstrated. In a case study time-series analysis was applied to assess the impact of the closure of the Grevelingen estuary (S. W. Odorous gases emitted from refuse wastes were scrubbed through activated carbon columns until odor breakthrough occured. Refuse air samples were collected at the influent and effluent ports of the columns for analysis on a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometric system and for odor determination by dynamic olfactometry. Chromatographic profiles of the gases emitted from refuse material were obtained and volatiles identified included carboxylic acids and some sulphur compounds. Organoleptic tests with a dynamic olfactometer revealed that the odor concentration of refuse air averaged about 50 sou m–3. The adsorption capacities of four commercial grades of activated carbon for refuse odor were evaluated and compared. Results indicated that chemically impregnated activated carbons that are commonly used for odor control at sewerage facilities were less cost effective than non-chemically impregnated carbons.  相似文献

A pot culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different treatments of distillery wastewater, i.e. raw, treated, diluted and raw distillery wastewater mixed with domestic waste stabilization pond effluent (1:1) on populations of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and nitrogen fixing bacteria. The results indicated that raw wastewater decreased the population of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes. The growth rates of Rhizobium and Azotobacter were also reduced after raw wastewater application. The toxic effect of raw wastewater was minimized when it was mixed with stabilization pond effluent (1:1), this was demonstrated by an increase in the populations of all the microorganisms studied. When a groundnut plant was irrigated with raw distillery wastewater, no fruits were produced and there was also less nodulation. This study indicates that raw distillery wastewater is very toxic to the soil microorganisms which are important in the soil ecosystem.  相似文献

Excessive nitrate-N in south-central Minnesota ditches and streams is related to land-use change, and may be contributing to the development of the zone of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. Intensive land-use (agricultural management) has progressively increased as subsurface drainage has improved crop productivity over the past 25 years. We have examined water at varying scales for delta18O and, nitrate-N concentrations. Additionally, analysis of annual peak flows, and channel geomorphic features provided a measure of hydrologic change. Laboratory and field results indicate that agricultural drainage has influenced riverine source waters, concentrations of nitrate-N, channel dimensions and hydrology in the Blue Earth River (BER) Basin. At the mouth of the BER shallow ground water comprises the largest source water component. The highest nitrate-N concentrations in the BER and tributaries typically occurred in May and June and ranged from 7-34 mg L(-1). Peak flows for the 1.01-2-yr recurrence intervals increased by 20-to-206% over the past 25 years. Geomorphic data suggest that small channels (ditches) were entrenched by design, whereas, natural that are disconnected from an accessible riparian corridor. Frequent access to a functioning riparian zone is important for denitrification.  相似文献
