The Crangon crangon (L.) population of the Solway Firth displays a mean incidence of shell disease of 13.2%, which is some 1.5 times more than any other crustacean species in this area. The condition is characterized by superficial pitting and cracking of the carapace leading to the formation of blackened erosions which are commoner in larger individuals and, in all, are lost at the moult. Visually identical damage appears within 4-5 days of mechanical abrasion of the exoskeleton, but is inhibited if the abraded animals are maintained in an antibiotic medium.

Disease incidence fluctuates throughout the year with minima in March and August and maxima during the winter months. Apparently the activity of the local commercial shrimp fishery is the primary cause of the high incidence of shell disease amongst these shrimp. Mechanical damage to the exoskeleton, incurred as a result of abrasion by fishing instruments, facilitates penetration of the epicuticle by chitinoclastic bacteria which then induce chitinolysis of the underlying calcified exoskeletal layers. The condition does not seem to cause a significant mortality of the shrimp population nor does it affect the value of the commercial catch.  相似文献

For natural water bodies there are many models of biochemical oxidation of organic pollutants, from simple to complicated ones. For the artificial conditions of waste water treatment plants there are numerous models of oxidation processes too. The authors believe that a better understanding of these processes in nature would be gained if the oxidation processes in more simple artificial conditions were understood.An attempt has been made to explain the variety of types of models of waste treatment in an activated sludge system or a biofilm reactor by the diffusion mechanism of oxidation of single substrates on the one hand, and by superposition of the kinetics of oxidation of single substrates in measurements of the dynamics of oxidation of a complex pollutant on the other hand.The conditions in which zero- and first-order models are valid in the oxidation of single substrates are derived. Respective formulae for rate constants are given. Monod's model is valid in a broader range of substrate concentration variations. An approximate formula for the half-saturation constant is proposed. Satisfactory agreement with experimental data for glucose and ammonia substrates is shown.The formal character of models being used at present is claimed for multicomponent substrates. The accuracy of the calculation is largely governed by the number of model coefficients. Similar results obtained by Monod's and Grau's models, often used in practice, are emphasized.  相似文献

At Loch Fleet, and in other liming studies in similar environments, catchment liming is successful if an adequate amount of lime is added to hydrological source areas. Geochemical modelling demonstrates that the relatively late acidification of L. Fleet is consistent with the ameliorating effect of an alkaline groundwater input: the presence of this input implies that had the Loch not been limed in 1985 it would have recovered to conditions suitable for fish in about 20 years, given current commitments to sulphur emission reductions. Lakes without similar alkaline groundwater are not likely to recover as quickly. the different consequences of liming and emission reduction as methods of restoring acid waters are reviewed and contrasted. Restoration of waters by liming may result in some undesirable effects on the terrestrial catchment: these are discussed but it is concluded that catchment liming, used with discrimination, can be an acceptable management tool.  相似文献

Citrulline, one of the forms in which fixed nitrogen is assimilated in free-living blue-green algae and additionally in the blue-green algae/cycad symbiosis in Macrozamia, is similarly assimilated in the nitrogen fixing root nodules of Alnus glutinosa. By investigating the localisation of ornithine carbamoyl transferase in both cases it has been shown that in these symbiotic systems the ornithine carbamoyl transferase is only active in host tissue. This suggests that the host exerts an influence on the assimilation of fixed nitrogen in the microsymbiont resulting in the blocking of the enzyme trans-carbamylase with the subsequent excretion of the fixed nitrogen as ammonia to the host for further assimilation. This is discussed in the light of work on nitrogen metabolism in other symbiotic relationships involving nitrogen fixing organisms, where the effect of altering the habitat of the micro-organism has in fact resulted in a change in its metabolism.  相似文献

A model has been developed which predicts the numbers of immature and adult workers, males and queens, in a Paravespula vulgaris colony throughout a season. This model colony is based on the rate of egg lay of the queen which is approximated by a skewed normal frequency curve. Larval and pupal numbers are predicted by applying mean developmental times to the eggs produced. For workers, adult numbers are produced by modifying pupal numbers by adult longevity, while adult males and queens are obtained directly from their respective pupal numbers. Data generated by the model compare favourably with published observations.Changes in the larva : worker ratio through the season affecting adult longevity and immature stage developmental times are discussed. The total number of adults produced per worker (Ro) varies throughout the season following a skewed normal frequency distribution. Adult queens and males accounted for only 15% of the total seasonal egg production.This model could easily be adapted to deal with population changes in colonies of other eusocial wasps.  相似文献

We introduce an empirical method of estimating the number of species in a community based on a random sample. The numbers of sampled individuals of different species are modeled as a multinomial random vector, with cell probabilities estimated by the relative abundances of species in the sample and, for hypothetical species missing from the sample, by linear extrapolation from the abundance of the rarest observed species. Inference is then based on likelihoods derived from the multinomial distribution, conditioning on a range of possible values of the true richness in the community.
