Uses of wastewater drives significant economic activity, supports countless livelihoods particularly those for developing countries. While using wastewater, the challenge is to identify practical, affordable safeguards that do not threaten the health of users. In Yanbu Al-Sinaiyah, treated sewage effluent (TSE) is used for landscape purposes. In the present study, the odour problem caused by TSE in community area has been addressed. Samples were collected and analysed for total coliform, odour, trihalomethanes (THMs), total organic carbon (TOC) and other physicochemical parameters. Results show that in distribution network, residual chlorine was below the detection limit, turbidity, THMs, TOC and total coliform concentration was much higher than point source, and concentration of these parameters was further increased in problematic areas. It was also observed that areas with odourous problem were at the tail of irrigation network. This indicates that odour problem was due to less residual chlorine high turbidity, high rate of coliform and TOC. In odourous water samples, carbon disulphide and dimethyl sulphide were also identified by GC/MS, while in other areas where there was no odour, both these compounds were not detected. Odour problem was successfully resolved by improving sand filtration system to minimise turbidity the main cause of odour, increasing the residual chlorine at the treatment plant and regularly flushing the distribution network. 相似文献
We performed a systematic and meta-analysis study to find the association between cadmium (Cd) exposure and blood pressure (BP)/hypertension (HTN) in exposed general populations. We searched main databases for literature published between year 2000 and April 15, 2021. Quality assessment was performed with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. Heterogeneity between studies was determined by I-squared (I2) statistic. The random effects model was used to determine the association between blood and urine Cd levels with hypertension. The overall standard differences in mean for Cd level in hypertensive and control groups were 3.34, 1.79, and 8.09 based on samples from blood, urine, and hair, respectively. The overall standard differences in mean for Cd level in the low and high exposure groups were???0.795 and???1.036 based on blood and urinary samples, respectively. Our findings indicate a positive relationship between blood and hair Cd levels and hypertension. We also found that hair is the optimal biological sample to find the relationship between Cd exposure and hypertension for both genders. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

On August 1, 1987, a change in Alabama laws went into effect raising the speed limit on the rural interstates to 65 mph. Two accident data sets (one year before and one year after the law change) were compared to assess the impact of the 65 mph speed limit on severity and frequency of accidents. Although accident severity appeared to remain the same from before to after time periods, the frequency of accidents on the rural interstates increased significantly, by 18.88%. However, the significant increase on the rural interstates was accompanied by a nonsignificant decrease of 456 accidents in the entire state of Alabama. This confounding result made it difficult to isolate the cause of various significant changes, but the overall evidence is not favorable to the recent increases in driving speeds. 相似文献
An approach to rapid soil testing which involved the use of simple solvent extraction methods was developed. The analytes of interest were priority pollutants of low water solubility which could not be readily removed from the soil using water. Direct toxicity testing of the soil samples by Microtox showed a high background toxicity which prevented realistic toxicity data from being obtained for the contaminants present. A range of different extraction solutions was used in an attempt to extract the contaminants while eliminating the matrix effects of the soil. It was necessary that the solvents selected for extraction of the soil samples were not of significant toxicity, as this could potentially mask the toxic effects of any compounds extracted from the soil. The extraction efficiencies of solvent systems were evaluated using pentachlorophenol (PCP) as a model compound of known toxicity in the Microtox assay. A rapid and cost-effective method was developed in order to determine the amount of PCP recovered from the soil by the extraction solvents employed. This method consisted of a solid phase extraction (SPE) step followed by quantification using capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Recoveries were greater when a higher proportion of organic solvent (methanol) was used in the extraction process, and lowest when water was used. An extraction based on water could provide information on the potential for leaching of contaminants from the soil into nearby water bodies in an environmental setting. An organic solvent extraction method could indicate how much toxicity soil-dependent organisms might be exposed to through ingestion. Extraction based on 50% (v/v) methanol in water was considered to be the most suitable overall extraction solution for soil screening, given that this permitted extraction of the water-insoluble compound PCP at a level which was clearly toxic in the Microtox assay while also retaining the capability to extract water-soluble contaminants. 相似文献
