Floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play important roles in plant-pollinator interactions. We investigated the reproductive ecology and floral VOCs of Zygopetalinae orchids to understand the relationship between floral scents and pollinators. We performed focal observations, phenological censuses and breeding system experiments in eight species in southeast Brazil. Floral scents were collected and analysed using SPME/GC-MS. We performed multivariate analyses to group species according to affinities of their VOCs and define compounds associated to each plant. Dichaea cogniauxiana was pollinated by weevils which use their developing ovules, while D. pendula was pollinated by the same weevils and perfume-collecting male euglossine bees. The other species were deceit-pollinated by bees. Zygopetalum crinitum was pollinated by carpenter bees, while W. warreana, Z. mackayi and Z. maxillare were bumblebee-pollinated. The latter was also pollinated by Centris confusa. Breeding system varied widely with no association to any pollinator group. Most VOCs are common to other floral scents. Zygopetalum crinitum presented an exclusive blend of VOCs, mainly composed of benzenoids. The scents of Pabstia jugosa, Promenaea xanthina and the Zygopetalum spp. were similar. The bumblebee-pollinated species have flowering periods partially overlapped, thus neither phenology nor pollinators constitute hybridization barriers among these species. Euglossines are not the only pollinators of Zygopetalinae. Different VOCs, size and lifespan of flowers are associated with distinct pollinators. A distinctive VOC bouquet may determine specialisation in carpenter bees or male euglossines within bee-pollinated flowers. Finally, visitation of deceit-pollinated flowers by perfume-collecting euglossines allows us to hypothesise how pollination by this group of bees had evolved. 相似文献

Water requirements to supply human needs lead water stakeholders to store more water during surplus periods to fulfil the
demand during – not only – scarcity periods. At the reservoirs, mostly those in semi-arid regions, water level then fluctuates
extremely between rises and downward during one single year. Besides of water management implications, changes on physical,
chemical and biological dynamics of these drawdown and refilling are little known yet. This paper shows the results, throughout
a year, on solids, nutrients (N and P), chlorophyll-a, and sedimentation changes on the dynamics, when the former policy was applied in a reservoir from the semi-arid Northwestern
Mexico. Water level sinusoidal trend impinged changes on thermal stratification and mixing, modifying nutrient cycling and
primary producer responses. According to nitrogen and phosphorus concentration as well as chlorophyll-a, reservoir was mesotrophic, becoming hypertrophic during drawdown. Nutrient concentrations were high (1.22 ± 0.70 and 0.14 ± 0.12 mg
P l−1), increasing phosphorus and lowering N:P significantly throughout the study period, although no intensive agricultural, no
urban development, neither industrial activities take place in the watershed. This suggests nutrient recycling complex mechanisms,
including nutrient release from the sediment–water interface as the main nutrient pathway when shallowness, at the same time
as mineralization, increases. Outflows controlled nitrogen and phosphorus availability on the ecosystem while organic matter
depended on river inflows. As on other subtropical aquatic ecosystems, nitrogen limited primary productivity (Spearman correlation
R = 0.75) but chlorophyll-a seasonal pattern showed an irregular trend, prompting other no-nutrient related limitants. Shallowness induced a homogeneous
temporal pattern on water quality. This observed temporal variability was mainly explained statistically by changes on solids
(mineral and organic), chlorophyll-a and flows (62.3%). Annual sedimentation rates of total solids ranged from 11.73 to 16.29 kg m−2 year−1 with organic matter comprising around 30%. N:P ratio on sedimentation rates were as high as could be expected in a resuspension
dominated ecosystem, and spatially inverse related with N:P ratio on bottom sediments. Distance from river inlet into the
reservoir reveals a marked spatial heterogeneity on solid and nitrogen sedimentation, showing the system dependence on river
inflows and supporting resuspension as the main phosphorus pathway. Accretion rates (2.19 ± 0.40 cm year−1) were not related to hydrological variability but decreased with the distance to the river input. Total sediment accumulation
(9,895 tons km−2 year−1) denotes siltation as other serious environmental problem in reservoirs but possibly not related with operational procedures. 相似文献

Spanish workers have been among the most exposed to psychosocial risks across the European Union.CC.OO. and ISTAS decided to establish an action plan to empower workers’ health and safety representatives to have an influence on the psychosocial risk assessment processes leading to negotiations with employers over a more democratic, fair and healthier work organization.Most important outcomes included 3600 companies which have followed a participatory process culminating with the implementation of agreed upon at source preventive measures in 40% of cases.There exists some evidence that preventive actions have increased in Spain since CC.OO.’s workers’ health and safety representatives started systematically pushing for improvements in the psychosocial work environment, however the quality of such actions is less clear.Future priorities include: first, to overcome barriers related to the interaction with external agents, especially with professional and administrative bodies. Second, to increase collaboration with scientific institutions to ensure and improve quality of both risk assessment tools and preventive actions. Third, to evaluate at the source interventions at company level with special interest in looking at the involvement of worker representatives, managers and OH professionals and the impact of their involvement on the undertaking of effective preventive actions. Fourth, increasing interaction between ISTAS and CC.OO. in order to place demands for the improvement of psychosocial working conditions more centrally in collective bargaining. The aim of this work is the experimental determination of effective transport properties of porous media consisting of compacted pieces of cardboard and polyethylene (PE). The proposed method itself is more general and can be applied to many different materials and contexts. Three major transport properties were determined: porosity, tortuosity factor and permeability. Three parameters characterizing the media were varied over a wide range: the bulk density, the size of the elements entering the mix, and the proportion of cardboard and PE in the mix. The properties were measured by means of a specially designed experimental device based on miscible gas tracing. The porosity and tortuosity factor were simultaneously determined by parametric identification, based on the experimental sample output response to an inlet gas concentration step change compared to the results of a direct numerical model. Permeability was calculated in the standard way from the measurement of the pressure drop across the sample. The reproducibility of the measurements was very good. It was found that changing the material density of the medium significantly affects all three structural properties. When the bulk density is varied between 300 and 900 kg m(-3), the tortuosity factor varies in a range as large as 18-8 and the permeability decreases by a ratio of 2-3. The tortuosity factor shows unusual variation, characterized by a decrease when density is increased above 500 kg m(-3). The size of the elements does not significantly affect the structural properties of the medium in the range of parameters studied. 相似文献

A trade-off between growth and mortality rates characterizes tree species in closed canopy forests. This trade-off is maintained by inherent differences among species and spatial variation in light availability caused by canopy-opening disturbances. We evaluated conditions under which the trade-off is expressed and relationships with four key functional traits for 103 tree species from Barro Colorado Island, Panama. The trade-off is strongest for saplings for growth rates of the fastest growing individuals and mortality rates of the slowest growing individuals (r2 = 0.69), intermediate for saplings for average growth rates and overall mortality rates (r2 = 0.46), and much weaker for large trees (r2 < or = 0.10). This parallels likely levels of spatial variation in light availability, which is greatest for fast- vs. slow-growing saplings and least for large trees with foliage in the forest canopy. Inherent attributes of species contributing to the trade-off include abilities to disperse, acquire resources, grow rapidly, and tolerate shade and other stresses. There is growing interest in the possibility that functional traits might provide insight into such ecological differences and a growing consensus that seed mass (SM), leaf mass per area (LMA), wood density (WD), and maximum height (H(max)) are key traits among forest trees. Seed mass, LMA, WD, and H(max) are predicted to be small for light-demanding species with rapid growth and mortality and large for shade-tolerant species with slow growth and mortality. Six of these trait-demographic rate predictions were realized for saplings; however, with the exception of WD, the relationships were weak (r2 < 0.1 for three and r2 < 0.2 for five of the six remaining relationships). The four traits together explained 43-44% of interspecific variation in species positions on the growth-mortality trade-off; however, WD alone accounted for > 80% of the explained variation and, after WD was included, LMA and H(max) made insignificant contributions. Virtually the full range of values of SM, LMA, and H(max) occurred at all positions on the growth-mortality trade-off. Although WD provides a promising start, a successful trait-based ecology of tropical forest trees will require consideration of additional traits. 相似文献

Recent results from EU-sponsored projects have shed new light on the workings of the atmosphere in the Mediterranean Basin, where a large airmass becomes trapped and nearly stagnant over the sea during the summer. This work reviews the developments which have led to our present understanding of air pollution dynamics and associated meteorological processes in this region. In summer, the sea breezes combine with upslope winds to create recirculations along the coasts and within the western Mediterranean basin, with residence times in the order of days. Under strong insolation these recirculations become "large natural photo-chemical reactors" where most of the NOx emissions and other precursors are transformed into oxidants, acidic compounds, aerosols and ozone, which can exceed European Union directives for several months of the year. The objective of this paper is to evaluate available experimental evidence and complementary modelling results to help in the interpretation of observed ozone cycles and to anticipate possible scenarios for anthropogenic nitrogen deposition in the region. 相似文献
