One of the most practical approaches for establishing a successful microbial fuel cell (MFC) is to fasten the oxidation rate of the substrate by the microorganisms to get quick paced electron transfer between microbes and electrode. A genetically modified Escherichiacoli, overexpressing α-amylase, is constructed and applied as biocatalyst in MFC using starch as substrate. The results are compared with nonrecombinant, native E.coli. The results show better performance for the MFC containing the recombinant strain demonstrated by higher power density (PD), lower resistance, and significant electrochemical activity. Maximum PD has been recorded as 279.04 mW m?2 compared to 120.33 Mw m?2 for the MFC operated with nonrecombinant E.coli. The impedance results also suggest the effectiveness of the recombinant strain by lowering the internal resistance by more than half order as compared to the nonrecombinant one. These results affirm that the engineered strain can be used as a superior biocatalyst in contrast to the native strain and by using the technique of genetic alteration; gene of interest can be inserted based on the substrate to be treated. So, this work gives a useful insight for accomplishing successful MFC operation with the use of bacterial stains engineered at the molecular level. 相似文献

A new mathematical model has been developed that expresses the toxicities (EC50 values) of a wide variety of ionic liquids (ILs) towards the freshwater flea Daphnia magna by means of a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR). The data were analyzed using summed contributions from the cations, their alkyl substituents and anions. The model employed multiple linear regression analysis with polynomial model using the MATLAB software. The model predicted IL toxicities with R2 = 0.974 and standard error of estimate of 0.028. This model affords a practical, cost-effective and convenient alternative to experimental ecotoxicological assessment of many ILs. 相似文献

At its beginning, the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) did not include measures to guide farmers in preserving
ecosystems. At the same time, the social context on the 1960s and 1970s did not encourage environmental care to become a priority.
Since the 1980s, new social concern expressed alarm over ecology, recognizing that agriculture can pollute. These social changes
moved the CAP to add measures that linked agriculture and environment. In order to study if the EU decision-makers have designed
a CAP which responds to a new ethic that incorporates environmental care and social demands, two questions rise: whether the
social image of agriculture as a polluting activity has changed; and whether farming performs the environmental functions
demanded by society. To answer the previous questions, we have reviewed the environmental aspects added to the CAP, then a
poll has been conducted and cluster method and classification tree models have been used to group respondents according to
their opinions. The results show that the society ascribes great relevance to the environment for the future sustainability

ABSTRACTCadmium (Cd) is a toxic-heavy metal that induces a wide range of behavioural, biochemical and physiological effects in aquatic organisms. Oxidative damage has been proposed as a possible mechanism involved in cadmium toxicity. The current study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Spirulina as feed additive (1?mg/L) against the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) 0.5?mg/L in freshwater mussel Unio ravoisieri. At the end of the exposed period of 4 days, digestive gland antioxidant status Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Glutathione-S-transferase and damage markers such as Malondialdehyde and Protein carbonyl were determined. Associations between biomarkers were assessed by a multivariate analysis technique, principal component analysis (PCA). The results of this study revealed that digestive gland antioxidant status showed a significant decrease when mussels were exposed to Cd. Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and Glutathione-S-transferase activities in the Cd?+?SP group were significantly higher than the Cd group (p 0.05). Tissue levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl in the Cd?+?SP group were significantly lower than the Cd group (P?0.05). Our results show that the pretreatment with Spirulina protects the mussel from Cadmium-induced tissue damage by its antioxidant properties. 相似文献
