To investigate the role of magnetic compass orientation in oceanic migrating chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, an ultrasonic telemetry study was carried out in the western North Pacific off the coast of Kushiro, Hokkaido. Four salmon were fitted with a tag which generated an artificial magnetic field and modified the geomagnetic field around the head of the fish. Initially, the free-ranging salmon with stomach-implanted ultrasonic transmitters were tracked for a period of several hours before the magnetic field was altered for a period of 16 h. The generator produced an alternating magnetic field intensity of about 6 gauss, with polarity which reversed every 11.25 min. There was no observable effect on the horizontal and vertical movements of the salmon when the magnetic field was modified. However, it was noted that salmon slowed their swimming speed significantly before changing direction, regardless of whether the fish were swimming under the normal geomagnetic field or whether they were swimming under the modified field. This article presents approaches to maximize the mechanical performance of bacterial cellulose/poly(lactic acid) composites through chemical modification of the interface. This is achieved by both cross-linking the layered bacterial cellulose structure and by grafting maleic anhydride to the matrix material. Unmodified and glyoxalized bacterial cellulose (BC) networks have been embedded in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) resin and then in maleated resin using a compression molding method. The effect of these chemical modifications on the physical properties of these composites is reported. The tensile properties of the composites showed that Young??s moduli can be increased significantly when both BC networks and PLA were chemically modified. Interface consolidation between layers in BC networks has been achieved by glyoxalization. The effect of these modifications on both stress-transfer between the fibers and between the matrix and the fibers was quantified using Raman spectroscopy. Two competitive deformation mechanisms are identified; namely the mobility between BC layers, and between BC and PLA. The coupling strength of these interfaces could play a key role for optimization of these composites?? mechanical properties.  相似文献

Propolis is a natural resinous product collected by honeybees from certain plants. It has gained popularity as a food and alternative medicine. Poplar and Baccharis are well known as the source plants of European and Brazilian propolis, respectively. However, the propolis from Okinawa, Japan, contains some prenylflavonoids not seen in other regions such as Europe and Brazil, suggesting that the plant origin of Okinawan propolis is a particular plant that grows in Okinawa. To identify the plant origin of Okinawan propolis, we observed the behavior of honeybees as they collected material from plants and caulked it inside the hive. Honeybees scraped resinous material from the surface of plant fruits of Macaranga tanarius and brought it back to their hive to use it as propolis. We collected samples of the plant and propolis, and compared their constituents by high-performance liquid chromatography with a photo-diode array detector. We also compared their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical scavenging activity. The chemical constituents and biological activity of the ethanol extracts of the plant did not differ from those of propolis. This indicates directly that the plant origin of Okinawan propolis is M. tanarius. S. K. and J. N. contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

Open dumping sites in Surabaya and Palembang, Indonesia, have been studied to investigate emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs), as well as the resulting soil contamination that might be caused by open burning of municipal solid waste. The emission factors of the waste residue, accounting for the ratio of waste burned, have also been characterized. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in soil from Palembang were 61–310 pg-TEQ/g (dry weight) and 6.3–32 pg-TEQ/g, respectively. In Surabaya, very low levels of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs, ranging from 0.075 to 0.098 and 0.00032 to 0.095 pg-TEQ/g, respectively, were observed in soil for an open dumping site that included a top cover layer of soil above the compacted waste. The large difference in concentrations can be explained by the fact that open burning of waste is the source of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs. The emission factors for the residue for PCDD/Fs ranged from 27 to 140 pg-TEQ/g, and a sensitivity analysis found that the maximum emission factor to the residue could be 5600 pg-TEQ/g. Our results indicate that emissions of PCDD/Fs can be controlled by modifying the open dumping process to one that involves depositing soil layers on top of the compacted waste.  相似文献
