Diel trophic interactions between vertically-migrating zooplankton and their fish predators in an eelgrass community 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Diel changes in the composition of crustacean zooplankton and the diets of fish predators from an intertidal eelgrass flat were monitored concurrently. The zooplankton is characterized by two major components. The obligate zooplankters (holoplanktonic calanoid copepods and meroplanktonic decapod larvae) appear to exhibit vertical migration, being present in higher densities near the surface of the water column at night. The facultative zooplankton (amphipods and ostracods) are benthic during the day, but move up into the water column at night. Planktivorous midwaterdwelling fish consume calanoid copepods and decapod larvae during the day and cease feeding or switch their diet to amphipods at night. Benthic-dwelling fish consume some amphipods during both day and night. The factors important in prey selection by fish and the functional significance of vertical migration in both components of the zooplankton are discussed in the light of the changing patterns of fish predation.This paper is Publication No. 183 in the Ministry for Conservation of Victoria, Environmental Studies Series. 相似文献

The marine planktonic diatom Thalassiosira weisflogii was grown in turbidostat culture under both continuous and 12 hL: 12 hD illumination regimes in order to study the kinetics of adaptation to growth-irradiance levels. In both illumination regimes adaptation to a higher growth-irradiance level was accompanied by an increase in cell division rates and a decrease in chlorophyll a cell-1. The rates of adaptation for both processes, derived from first order kinetic analysis, equaled each other in each experiment. The results suggest that during the transition from low-to-high growth-irradiance levels chlorophyll a is diluted by cell division and is not actively degraded. Introduction of a light/dark cycle lowered the rate of adaptation. In transitions from high-to-low growth-irradiance levels there was a sharp drop in growth rates and a slow increase in chlorophyll a cell-1 under both continuous and intermittent illumination. In the 12 hL:12hD cycle there was a circadian rhythm in chlorophyll a cell-1, where cellular chlorophyll contents increased during the light cycle and decreased during the dark cycle. This circadian rhythm was distinctly different from light intensity adaptation. For kinetic analysis of light intensity adaptation in a 12 hL: 12 hD cycle, the circadian periodicity was separated from the light intensity response by subjecting the data to a Kaiser window optimization digital filter. Kinetic parameters for light-intensity adaptation were resolved from the filtered data. Predation by the medusa Aurelia aurita L. on early first-feeding stage larvae of the herring clupea harengus L. was studied in the laboratory. The medusae were captured in Loch Etive, Scotland. Herring larvae were reared from the extificially fertilized eggs of spawning Clyde herring caught in March, 1982. Swimming speeds, volume searched”, capture efficiency and predation rates increased as medusa size increased. Predation rates on fish larvae increased with prey density, but appeared to approach a maximum at high prey densities; in 1 h experiments, a maximum rate of predation of 6.64 larvae h-1 was estimated by fitting an Ivlev function. A model to predict predation rates was constructed from swimming speeds, sizes and densities of medusae and larvae, and capture efficiency. The rates of predation predicted from the model fell within the range of experimental data, but tended to underestimate rates and did not account for saturation of medusae. Swimming patterns of medusae changed after prey capture: (a) before capture, encounter rates were low and medusae were relatively less active; (b) after capture of 1 larva, encounter rates doubled, with the stimulated medusae exhibiting increased activity and an aftered “searching” path; and (c) after capture of many larvae, swimming speeds and encounter rates of medusae decreased. 相似文献

Ninety specimens of Mustelus were obtained from the fish market in Shimonoseki, Japan, during the period June, 1972 to May, 1973. Among these, two species, M. manazo Bleeker and M. griseus Pietschmann, were identified. M. manazo is a viviparous non-placental species, and M. griseus viviparous placental. In M. manazo, the upper labial fold — an important taxonomic criterion — is markedly longer than the lower fold, and in M. griseus, the lower labial fold is slightly longer than the upper. M. griseus and M. kanekonis display the same characteristics in respect to relative lengths of upper and lower labial folds and vertebral numbers, hence, M. kanekonis is considered to be a synonym of M. griseus. 相似文献

When shore crabs Carcinus maenas are transferred from 11 to 38 S at 11°C, new constant levels of hemolymph freezing points and of concentrations of Na, K, Ca, and Mg in the hemolymph are accomplished within 24h. From a decrease in serum protein and in serum free amino acids and an increase in the relative amounts of individual essential free amino acids in the body fluids of whole crabs, a participation of proteolytic activities and a transport of amino acids from hemolymph to cell is deduced; the stationary concentration of total intracellular free amino acids increases up to a nearly two-fold value, compared with the concentration in crabs remaining in diluted sea water. Also, the low molecular neutral sugars increase in whole crabs after high salinity stress, reaching values of more than two-fold initial concentrations within a period of 10 days. This increase is fully accounted for by a 6.7-fold increase in trehalose levels. The processes of increasing the concentrations of low molecular organic material seem to be slower than those of establishing new osmotic pressures in the hemolymph. The oxygen consumption decreases by 30 to 45% to new constant values within 8 to 12 h after the salinity change from 11 to 38, reflecting similar kinetics as the establishment of new osmotic pressures in the hemolymph. 相似文献

A rapid, automated procedure has been used for differentiation and quantitative determination of siderite, calcite and dolomite, based on the different rates of dissolution of the three carbonate species when reacted with excess 5 mol/litre HCl. The method employs manometric measurements of acid-liberated CO2 with a membrane differential-pressure transducer coupled to a stripchart recorder. Oxygen consumption rates of the deep-sea fish Sebastolobus altivelis were measured in situ on pelagic juveniles at mesopelagic depths (608 m) and on demersal adults at bathyal depths (1 300 m) in the Santa Catalina Basin in March 1982. Two pelagic juveniles were individually collected, and respiration was measured continuously for approximately 2 d with a slurp gun respirometer manipulated from the submersible “Alvin”. Oxygen consumption rates of these juveniles were highly variable and were 1.5 to 1.8 times higher during the night than during the day. Gut contents of the juveniles were mainly euphausiids (Euphausia pacifica and Nematoscelis difficilis). Four demersal adults were collected by “Alvin” and individually placed in fish-trap respirometers on the bottom where respiration was measured continuously for approximately 1 d. Weight-specific O2 consumption rates for adults decreased with increasing body weight and were consistent in magnitude throughout the incubation period. Population O2 consumption for demersal S. altivelis (calculated from abundance, size-frequency distribution, and O2 consumption regression equation) was 11.01 μl O2 m-2 h-1, which is two orders of magnitude less than the O2 consumption rate for the population of the most abundant epibenthic megafaunal species in the Santa Catalina Basin, the ophiuroid Ophiophthalmus normani. O. normani is a principal prey for adults of S. altivelis based on gutcontent analysis. Given the population O2 consumption rate as an estimate of food energy demand, the demersal population of S. altivelis would assimilate only 0.007% of the standing crop of O. normani per day. 相似文献

Standing crop values of Laminaria species sampled between 0 to 2 m depth in the sublittoral of Helgoland, a small rocky island in the southern North Sea, are similar to those reported by other workers from Norwegian or Scottish coasts. Below 2 m water depth, however, standing crop values are found to be reduced to a far greater extent with increasing depth than in the Norwegian or Scottish areas studied. Maximum standing crop values are not found in Laminaria digitata and L. saccharina growing just below the low water mark of spring tides, but in the upper L. hyperborea forest at 2 m depth. Population density and leaf area index (LAI) decrease with increasing depth (but not the average weight of individuals constituting the L. hyperborea forest). It is suggested that the depth at which LAI becomes 1 represents an important ecological threshold, since growth rates of L. hyperborea specimens appear to decrease at greater depths but not to increase above the threshold. Self-shading might equalize, to a certain extent, the quantity of underwater irradiance available to an individual phylloid at all depths at which a close vegetation of Laminaria species occurs. 相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M.
