Predatory arthropods are attracted to infochemicals emitted by their herbivore prey or by the prey’s host plants. We studied such a tritrophic system measuring the olfactory responses of three potter wasp species (Symmorphus murarius, Symmorphus gracilis, Discoelius zonalis, Hymenoptera: Eumeninae) to salicylaldehyde, sequestered as a defence compound by Chrysomela leaf beetle larvae when feeding on Salicaceae, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by aspen (Populus tremula, Salicaceae). In electroantennographic recordings (EAG), the highly specialized S. murarius that almost exclusively feeds on larvae of Salicaceae-feeding Chrysomela species was more sensitive to salicylaldehyde than the less specialized S. gracilis, feeding on such Chrysomela species but also weevil larvae. In contrast the related D. zonalis, foraging for microlepidoptera caterpillars on various host plants, did not respond at all. Furthermore, the three wasp species responded differently to aspen VOCs in GC–MS/EAD measurements. These results indicate that the sense of smell of predatory potter wasps differs for prey and plant volatiles among related wasp species according to their degree of host specialization. The considerable differences in salicylaldehyde perception suggest that its originally defensive function has backfired as it is used by specialist potter wasps for prey location. This is an important clue on adaptive mechanisms of the highest trophic level of the well-studied evolutionary arms race among Chrysomela leaf beetles, their host plants and their enemies.  相似文献

Because the ferocious maize pest Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte can adapt to all currently used control strategies, focus has turned to the development of novel, more sustainable control methods, such as biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN). A good understanding of the biology and behaviour of these potential control agents is essential for their successful deployment. Root systems of many maize varieties emit (E)-β-caryophyllene (EβC) in response to feeding by larvae of the beetle D. v. virgifera. This sesquiterpene has been shown to attract certain species of EPN, thereby enhancing their control potential. In this study, we tested the effect of this root-produced volatile on the field efficacy of the three EPN Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Heterorhabditis megidis and Steinernema feltiae against D. v. virgifera larvae in southern Hungary. By comparing beetle emergence and root damage for two maize varieties, one that emits EβC and one that does not, it was found that root protection by H. megidis and S. feltiae was higher on the emitting variety, but this was not the case for H. bacteriophora. Overall, all three nematode species showed good control potential. We conclude that, if properly applied and in combination with the right maize variety, the release of these nematodes can be as effective as other control methods.  相似文献

Within this paper, we analyze the fulfillment of the Kyoto emissions reduction commitment particularly in Germany and its implication on the long-term paths of all macro-variables. Germany, like all other industrial or Annex-B countries, must reduce its emissions by 2010 according to what we call a Kyoto Forever scenario. We specifically investigate tradable permits as reduction measures in a national overlapping generations (OLG) model, where we change the discounting technique by using generation adjusted discounting (GAD) in comparison to conventional OLG discounting. We show that within our model framework Germany is able to develop along growing paths of, for example, gross domestic product (GDP) in sharp contrast to conventional results of OLG simulations. At the same time, current generations must share higher burdens in terms of lower GDP, per capita consumption and employment which can be initially interpreted as contemporary costs for reaching sustainable paths and, second, contributions for internalizing external effects. However, all costs in terms of lower macro-variables for current living generations are re-compensated through higher future values. This effect can be interpreted as an intergenerational application of full cost bearance, or, in other words, the polluter pays principle which is oriented towards sustainability of greenhouse gases abatement.  相似文献

Radon gas concentrations have been monitored as part of the operation of a tunnel (the Exploratory Studies Facility-ESF) at Yucca Mountain to ensure worker safety. The objective of this study was to examine the potential use of the radon data to estimate large-scale formation properties of fractured tuffs. This objective was examined by developing a numerical model, based upon the characteristics of the ESF and the Topopah Spring welded (TSw) tuff unit, capable of predicting radon concentrations for prescribed ventilation conditions. The model was used to address two specific issues. First, it was used to estimate the permeability and porosity of the fractures in the TSw at the length scale of the ESF and extending tens of meters into the TSw, which surrounds the ESF. Second, the model was used to understand the mechanism leading to radon concentrations exceeding a specified level within the ESF. The mechanism controlling radon concentrations in the ESF is a function of atmospheric barometric fluctuations being propagated down the ESF along with ventilated air flow and the slight suction induced by the ventilation exhaust fans at the South Portal of the ESF. These pressure fluctuations are dampened in the TSw fracture continuum according to its permeability and porosity. Consequently, as the barometric pressure in the ESF drops rapidly, formation gases from the TSw are pulled into the ESF, resulting in an increase in radon concentrations. Model calibration to both radon concentrations measured in the ESF and gas-phase pressure fluctuations in the TSw yielded concurrent estimates of TSw fracture permeability and porosity of 1 x 10(-11) m2 and 0.00034, respectively. The calibrated model was then used as a design tool to predict the effect of adjusting the current ventilation-system operation strategy for reducing the probability of radon gas concentrations exceeding a specified level.  相似文献

We review here the concept of sustainable chemistry (SC), which is still in its early development. One important element of SC is commonly defined as chemical research aiming at the optimization of chemical processes and products with respect to energy and material consumption, inherent safety, toxicity, environmental degradability, and so on. An increasing number of assessment systems containing quantitative indicators for these aspects are currently being developed. In addition, however, SC should also address the societal aspect of sustainability. With respect to scientific research, the societal aspect is defined here by two requirements: (1) the assumptions, objectives and implications of chemical research and its technical application should be made more transparent to various societal actors; (2) uncertainty and ignorance should be treated more explicitly in the course of scientific research. Meeting these requirements is necessary in order to lift the division between the allegedly disinterested and non-normative scientific research and the value-laden sphere of societal needs, preferences and decision-making situations. This, in turn, is understood here as a contribution to a more sustainable scientific practice. We illustrate the two elements of SC--optimization of products and processes as well as including the societal aspect--with the examples of environmental chemistry, green chemistry and the environmental assessment of chemical products. While considerable progress has been made in these fields, the societal aspect of SC remains to be recognized more fully in all branches of chemical research. One prerequisite for this is the inclusion of SC into chemical education from the very beginning.  相似文献

We investigate social circles in intra‐firm settings. First, we argue that social circles are inhabited by individuals whose attitudes display fit with the objectives of the social circle rather than more self‐centered instrumentalism or calculation. For a test of this hypothesis, we distinguish between friendship circles and strategy‐influence circles. We find that friendship circle membership is positively associated with attitudes that display empathic concern but negatively with more instrumental attitudes, whereas strategy‐influence circle membership is positively associated with attitudes that display long‐term ambition but negatively with attitudes that display short‐term calculation. Second, we argue and find that membership of social circles affects individual performance (social circles foster the exchange of information, for which we find clear evidence), albeit not necessarily in a linear fashion. Our new insights into social circle membership and performance implications can guide individuals in seeking access to such social circles and can aid management in understanding and perhaps influencing intra‐firm knowledge flows. The Russian natural gas industry is the world's largest producer and transporter of natural gas. This paper aims to characterize the methane emissions from Russian natural gas transmission operations, to explain projects to reduce these emissions, and to characterize the role of emissions reduction within the context of current GHG policy. It draws on the most recent independent measurements at all parts of the Russian long distance transport system made by the Wuppertal Institute in 2003 and combines these results with the findings from the US Natural Gas STAR Program on GHG mitigation options and economics.With this background the paper concludes that the methane emissions from the Russian natural gas long distance network are approximately 0.6% of the natural gas delivered. Mitigating these emissions can create new revenue streams for the operator in the form of reduced costs, increased gas throughput and sales, and earned carbon credits. Specific emissions sources that have cost-effective mitigation solutions are also opportunities for outside investment for the Joint Implementation Kyoto Protocol flexibility mechanism or other carbon markets.  相似文献

Low-temperature alteration reactions on uranium phases may lead to the mobilization of uranium and thereby poses a potential threat to humans living close to uranium-contaminated sites. In this study, the surface alteration of uraninite (UO2) and uranium tetrachloride (UCl4) in air atmosphere was studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy using an excitation wavelength of 408 nm. It was found that within minutes the oxidation state on the surface of the uraninite and the uranium tetrachloride changed. During the surface alteration process U(IV) atoms on the uraninite and uranium tetrachloride surface became stepwise oxidized by a one-electron step at first to U(V) and then further to U(VI). These observed changes in the oxidation states of the uraninite surface were microscopically visualized and spectroscopically identified on the basis of their fluorescence emission signal. A fluorescence signal in the wavelength range of 415–475 nm was indicative for metastable uranium(V), and a fluorescence signal in the range of 480–560 nm was identified as uranium(VI). In addition, the oxidation process of tetravalent uranium in aqueous solution at pH 0.3 was visualized by CLSM and U(V) was fluorescence spectroscopically identified. The combination of microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy provided a very convincing visualization of the brief presence of U(V) as a metastable reaction intermediate and of the simultaneous coexistence of the three states U(IV), U(V), and U(VI). These results have a significant importance for fundamental uranium redox chemistry and should contribute to a better understanding of the geochemical behavior of uranium in nature.
