Three components in extract of pheromone glands of female pea midges, Contarinia pisi, were found to be active on male pea midge antennae by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection. The EAD
active components were identified as 2-acetoxytridecane, (2S,11S)-diacetoxytridecane, and (2S,12S)-diacetoxytridecane. A blend of these compounds proved to be highly attractive to males in windtunnel experiments.

The resistance of a nutrient cycling system to a disturbance that alters the flow rates, measured by the displacement of the nutrient levels while the disturbance continues, is as important an aspect of stability as the rate of return to equilibrium after the disturbance ends. Two important characteristics of the resistance of a system are the ultimate displacement that would occur if the disturbance lasted indefinitely, and the rate at which the system approaches the ultimate displacement.The mathematical theory is worked out for linear systems and applied to a group of eight nutrient cycling models. The relative resistance of individual compartments of different systems depends heavily on the period of interest, because of the wide range of magnitudes of the eigenvalues, which determine the response times. However, when measuring the change in total nutrients in a system with small exterior flows compared with the amount of internal cycling, only the critical root is significant in determining the response rate. 相似文献

Goal, Scope, and Background
Soil organisms play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems. Plant Protection Products (PPPs) are known to affect these organisms and might have negative impacts on soil functions influenced by these organisms. Little research has been done to day on the impact of PPPs on tropical ecosystems. Therefore, in this study it was investigated whether the effects of pesticides differ between tropical and temperate regions and whether data generated under temperate conditions can be used for the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) in tropical regions.Methods
The effects of one fungicide (Carbendazim) and one insecticide (lambda-Cyhalothrin) on soil invertebrates (earthworms and arthropods) and functional parameters (organic matter (OM) breakdown, feeding rate) were evaluated in semi-field tests using Terrestrial Model Ecosystems (TMEs) and in field tests using litter-bags. The soil for the TMEs was extracted from the same site near Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil) where the field test was conducted (see Part 1, Römbke et al. 2005 〈DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1065/uswf2004.12.088.1〉). The soil was acid clay, typical for tropical regions. In the TMEs the standard test species as well as native tropical species were introduced. Several application scenarios, selected according to their relevance for practical conditions, were realized in TME-tests and field (duration: 150 and 365 days, respectively). Finally, an Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) for the two chemicals was performed.Results and Conclusions
The results from the TME-tests show that both test chemicals (depending on their concentration) had toxic effects on the tested organisms and organic matter breakdown, but not on the feeding rates. In the field organic matter breakdown was affected for some time too, but effects on single species were, with one exception (the native earthworm Andiorrhinus amazonicus) not observed; a result probably influenced by the small size of the test plots. Observed differences in OM breakdown between control and treated TMEs were often significant, while due to the higher variability even with differences >10% between means this was not the case in the field.Recommendation and Perspective
According to the preliminary results of the Environmental Risk, Assessment presented here, the use of the three model chemicals in the tropics (e.g. in Brazil) can cause a damage to the environmental compartment soil. Therefore, a more detailed investigation of these PPPs is recommended, in particular a better evaluation of the exposure (residue analysis). In general, the work performed in Amazonia can be summarised as follows: (1) Depending on the properties of the PPP, the effects of pesticides in tropical resp, temperate regions can differ. (2) If a PPP is going to be used in the tropics, data from tests modified for these conditions should be performed and their results should be incorporated in an Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) for tropical regions. 相似文献184.

Present biodiversity comprises the evolutionary heritage of Earth's epochs. Lineages from particular epochs are often found in particular habitats, but whether current habitat decline threatens the heritage from particular epochs is unknown. We hypothesized that within a given region, humans threaten specifically habitats that harbor lineages from a particular geological epoch. We expect so because humans threaten environments that dominated and lineages that diversified during these epochs. We devised a new approach to quantify, per habitat type, diversification of lineages from different epochs. For Netherlands, one of the floristically and ecologically best-studied regions, we quantified the decline of habitat types and species in the past century. We defined habitat types based on vegetation classification and used existing ranking of decline of vegetation classes and species. Currently, most declining habitat types and the group of red-listed species are characterized by increased diversification of lineages dating back to Paleogene, specifically to Paleocene-Eocene and Oligocene. Among vulnerable habitat types with large representation of lineages from these epochs were sublittoral and eulittoral zones of temperate seas and 2 types of nutrient-poor, open habitats. These losses of evolutionary heritage would go unnoticed with classical measures of evolutionary diversity. Loss of heritage from Paleocene-Eocene became unrelated to decline once low competition, shade tolerance, and low proportion of non-Apiaceae were accounted for, suggesting that these variables explain the loss of heritage from Paleocene-Eocene. Losses of heritage from Oligocene were partly explained by decline of habitat types occupied by weak competitors and shade-tolerant species. Our results suggest a so-far unappreciated human threat to evolutionary heritage: habitat decline threatens descendants from particular epochs. If the trends persist into the future uncontrolled, there may be no habitats within the region for many descendants of evolutionary ancient epochs, such as Paleogene. 相似文献

Pollimyrus adspersus discriminates the individually variable waveforms of Electric Organ Discharges (EODs) of conspecifics of only 150–250 s duration. We examined: (1) the discrimination threshold for artificially generated EODs of similar waveform, (2) the mechanism of signal analysis (spectral vs temporal) present, by determining the discrimination between different waveforms of identical amplitude spectra, and (3) the threshold field intensity and reach of discrimination. The triphasic P. adspersus EOD waveform was artificially generated by superimposing two Gaussians, one wide, the second narrow, inverted, and of threefold amplitude. The natural variability among individual EOD waveforms was simulated by phase-shifting one Gaussian relative to the other. The symmetrical waveform where the peaks of the two Gaussians coincided was used as a reference (phase shift=0, rewarded stimulus S+). Results were: (1) in food-rewarded conditioning experiments, trained fish (N=7) detected a phase-shift in artificial EOD stimuli as low as 2 s (N=2 fish), 6 s (N=1) and 10 s (N=1). (2) All fish tested (N=3) discriminated between artificial EODs of identical amplitude spectra but different waveforms (hence, different phase spectra), demonstrating a temporal mechanism of signal analysis. (3) The maximum reach of waveform discrimination was 130 cm at 4.9 Vp-p/cm and 100 S/cm water conductivity (test signal generated at natural amplitude), that is, similar to the reach of EOD detection. Social parasites exploit their host’s communication system to usurp resources and reproduce. In the honeybee, Apis mellifera, worker reproduction is regulated by pheromones produced by the queen and the brood. Workers usually reproduce when the queen is removed and young brood is absent. However, Cape honeybee workers, Apis mellifera capensis, are facultative intraspecific social parasites and can take over reproduction from the host queen. Investigating the manner in which parasitic workers compete with host queens pheromonally can help us to understand how such parasitism can evolve and how reproductive division of labour is regulated. In A. m. capensis, worker reproduction is associated with the production of queen-like pheromones. Using pheromonal contest experiments, we show that Apis mellifera scutellata queens do not prevent the production of queen-like mandibular gland compounds by the parasites. Given the importance of these pheromones in acquiring reproductive status, our data suggest that the single invasive lineage of parasitic workers occurring in the range of A. m. scutellata was selected for its superior ability to produce these signals despite the presence of a queen. Such resistance was indeed less frequent amongst other potentially parasitic lineages. Resistance to reproductive regulation by host queens is probably the key factor that facilitates the evolution of social parasitism by A. m. capensis workers. It constitutes a mechanism that allows workers to evade reproductive division of labour and to follow an alternative reproductive option by acquiring direct fitness in foreign colonies instead of inclusive fitness in their natal nests. 相似文献

The Test Guideline of the OECD (organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) is concerned with the international harmonisation of physicochemical, ecotoxicological and toxicological testing methods for chemicals and pesticides. New guidelines have been actualised and survey reports (Detailed Review Papers — DRP) dealing with test methods and the related questions have been compiled for the OECD member countries. The basic work to this international programme has occurred by way of the national co-ordinators who represent the interface between the national experts and the OECD bodies. The protoplast-biotest — with rain water samples taken in an agricultural area from March to July — showed a clear inhibition of the photosynthetical oxygen production. ABSTRACT: A combined sewer system is a complex system subject to the dynamic stimuli of precipitation, runoff pollution loads, and sanitary wastes. The system response is a random series of pollutant loads to a receiving water. In many localities, these discharges create considerable water quality problems. Mathematical models can and have played a useful role in predicting the behavior of combined sewer systems and evaluating abatement strategies. Based on the authors' experiences over the past several years, this paper explores some of the positive and negative aspects of using deterministic mathematical models to simulate the behavior of combined sewer systems.
