Polymeric materials are combustible in nature and poly (vtnyl chloride) is no ex-ception. Due to its high chlorine contents it is relatively fiame retardant, hawever be-cause of the processing aids such as plasttcizer etc. this advantage is lost. Duringburning the two main hazards of PVC are Hydrogen Chloride gas and copiousamount of smoke. Dtfferent methods for smoke suppression of polymers are also ap-plicable to the case of PVC. Complexes of dzfferent metal, mixedmetals and metalbased organics are discussed along with other methods of smoke suppression in PVC.Some aspects of smoke measurement have also been covered. 相似文献

The Andman and Nicobar archipelago comprises of about 556 small and big islands covering an area of 8493 sq. kms in the Bay of Bengal. The very remoteness of these islands from the mainland has preserved their pristine environment and spectacular natural beauty. The Andman and Nicobar Administration is going for major developmental projects to cope with the increasing needs of the people, which ultimately results in significant changes in environmental quality. This paper describes the existing environmental quality around Port Blair city, which will give baseline scenario to assess the environmental impacts due to developments in the future. In order to monitor the air quality of the region, sampling stations were selected based on the locations of various industries and domestic activities. Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) were monitored for a period of one month during winter season. In addition, micrometeorological data, viz. wind speed and direction were also recorded and analysed to obtain the representative meteorological scenario of the air basin. The monitored values of ambient air quality was found to be within the NAAQ standards of India.Similarly, noise levels were also measured at various locations viz., residential areas, commercial centres, villages, stone quarry sites and construction sites. Noise levels were found to exceed the standards at stone quarry, construction sites and other locations.Water quality studies were carried out with respect to surface and ground water. The various physico- chemical and bacteriological parameters were analysed. It was observed that the physico-chemical parameters of surface and ground water lie within the standards stipulated for Indian subcontinent except for heavy metals which exceed the limits in ground water samples. Bacteriological analysis of sea water and ground water indicate that they are contaminated with faecal matters. Further, the ground water can be used for drinking purposes only after adequate treatment. 相似文献

The study was conducted to assess the effects of in utero di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) exposure during late gestation on offspring’s development and reproductive system of male rats. Pregnant rats were treated orally with DBP (2, 10, 50 mg/kg), BBP (4, 20, 100 mg/kg), and diethylstilbestrol (DES) 6 μg/kg (positive control) from GD14 to parturition. A significant reduction in dams’ body weight on GD21 in DBP-, BBP-, and DES-treated groups was observed. The gestation length was considerably elevated in the treated groups. Decline in male pups’ body weight was significant at PND75 in DBP- (50 mg/kg), BBP- (20,100 mg/kg), and DES-treated groups. The weight of most of the reproductive organs and sperm quality parameters was impaired significantly in DBP- (50 mg/kg) and BBP- (100 mg/kg) treated groups. Further, a non-significant decline in testicular spermatid count and daily sperm production was also monitored in treated groups. A significant reduction in serum testosterone level in BBP (100 mg/kg), whereas the testicular activity of 17β-HSD was declined non-significantly in the treated groups with respect to control. The data suggests that DBP and BBP exposure during late gestation period might have adverse effects on offspring’s development, spermatogenesis, and steroidogenesis in adult rats. 相似文献

The market place is considered to be an important centre of daily life of campus community. In India, as in Europe and the
USA, other forms of shopping have emerged significantly and now predominate, for instance department stores and supermarkets.
Though, it is suffered from poor waste management, but the place could be a potential source for obtaining non-conventional
energy. The present study examined the quality of market waste management of the Indian Institute of Technology Campus along
with the feasibility of biogas production from leachate generated in the waste. Solid wastes from different storage locations
of the market place were collected and analyzed. The characteristics of solid wastes were found to be degradable in nature.
The wastes, composed of 85% of vegetable origin, were placed in a container and water was added to to generate leachate. The
self-purification efficiency of leachate was also studied in the Indian environment and compared with research findings in
the USA under an identical moisture application rate. Leachate characterization was investigated both under saturated and
submerged conditions. The treatability of leachate was studied in a laboratory-scale up-flow anaerobic filter with hollow
burnt clay rings as packing media. It was observed that 4,000–6,000 mg/l would be the optimum range of inlet chemical oxygen
demand (COD) concentration for leachate treatment because of the inhibitory effect of ammonia, sulphide, volatile fatty acids
and toxic metals in high concentrations at higher strengths of leachate. The gas production rate was found to be at a maximum
at 38°C and containing 70–75% methane. From experimental data, it was revealed that 83% COD was removed with input COD concentration
of 5,475 mg/l at 2 days hydraulic retention time with biogas yield coefficients of 0.61. The present study also investigated
the removal efficiency of chloride, ammonia, sulphide and nitrate. 相似文献

Termite mounds are abundant components of Tummalapalle area of uranium mineralization of Cuddapah District of Andhra Pradesh,
India. The systematic research has been carried out on the application of termite mound sampling to mineral exploration in
this region. The distribution of chemical elements Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Li, Rb, Sr, Ba, and U were studied both in termite
soils and adjacent surface soils. Uranium accumulations were noticed in seven termite mounds ranging from 10 to 36 ppm. A
biogeochemical parameter called “Biological Absorption Coefficient” of the termite mounds indicated the termite affected soils
contained huge amounts of chemical elements than the adjacent soils. 相似文献

The concept of ecosystem conservation as a broad theme came into existence during the 1970s under the Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Indian Government followed this approach and chose the method to segregate the landscape for conservation of the ecosystem as well as for the development of the local economy and its people. We have examined the effect of this policy and concurrently developed a theoretical modeling approach to understand how human behavior is changing under shifting political, socioeconomic and environmental conditions. A specific focus has been on how the landscape is changing in the mountains of the Indian Himalayan region where about 10% of the total geographical area is converted into protected landscape for conservation of biodiversity. For local people living in the Himalayan mountains in India, agriculture is the main land use activity and is strongly linked to the forests in providing sustainability. There are several branches in the rural ecosystems where the local people's economy was centered. These include agriculture, animal husbandry, medicinal and aromatic plants cultivation, forest resource collection, tourism and other occupations. The greatest proportion of the population was engaged in the agriculture sector, whose contribution is high in the rural economy (61%); followed by animal husbandry (19%), forest resource collection for economic gain (18%), and medicinal and aromatic plants cultivation (1.5%). However, three decades ago the animal husbandry branch of the rural ecosystem was contributing the maximum share towards rural household income (40%) followed by tourism (35.2%), and lastly agriculture (14%). The desire of farmers to secure the optimum output from agricultural land use has resulted in an increase for resource collection from the forests. The people's perception (n = 1,648) regarding overall changes occurring in the region was varied and most showed that the current trend within rural ecosystems has emerged because of the implementation of conservation policies/creation of national park and biosphere reserve (80%), followed by limitation (22%), climate (20%), population growth (7%), national economy (10%) and least by socioeconomic change (5%). The theoretical agent model developed here draws attention to agent/farmer behavior and land resource use for his livelihood in the temporal dimension. The current study would be helpful to introduce new approaches for the development of the methodological and theoretical aspects associated with the complex human and ecosystem interactions in the Himalayan mountains for sustainable landscape development. 相似文献

Methane biofiltration (MBF) is a novel low-cost technique for reducing low volume point source emissions of methane (CH4). MBF uses a granular medium, such as soil or compost, to support the growth of methanotrophic bacteria responsible for converting CH4 to carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). A field research program was undertaken to evaluate the potential to treat low volume point source engineered CH4 emissions using an MBF at a natural gas monitoring station. A new comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model was developed incorporating advection-diffusive flow of gas, biological reactions and heat and moisture flow. The one-dimensional version of this model was used as a guiding tool for designing and operating the MBF. The long-term monitoring results of the field MBF are also presented. The field MBF operated with no control of precipitation, evaporation, and temperature, provided more than 80% of CH4 oxidation throughout spring, summer, and fall seasons. The numerical model was able to predict the CH4 oxidation behavior of the field MBF with high accuracy. The numerical model simulations are presented for estimating CH4 oxidation efficiencies under various operating conditions, including different filter bed depths and CH4 flux rates. The field observations as well as numerical model simulations indicated that the long-term performance of MBFs is strongly dependent on environmental factors, such as ambient temperature and precipitation. 相似文献

Management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) or e-waste is becoming a major issue as around 20–50 million
tons of such waste is generated worldwide and increasing at a higher rate than other solid waste streams. Electrical and electronic
equipment (EEE) contains over 1,000 materials of which brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated biphenyls
(PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been the target of the regulators forcing manufacturers to adopt halogen-free
flame retardants. As far as these alternatives are concerned, key consideration should be its performance during the whole
life cycle through design, use and end-of-life management. The global halogen-free flame retardant movement has reached a
point of no return. The most important issue as far as the environment is concerned, for which the transformation to halogen-free
retardants was initially targeted, is to make sure that life span of the EEE using the alternatives to BFRs is not shortened
thereby resulting in unforeseen increases in e-waste to deal with. The aim of this article is to investigate the environmental
issues and current developments related to the use of BFRs in EEE manufacture. It describes the sources, toxicity and human
exposure of BFRs, EOL management such as recycling and thermal treatments, exposure of BFRs from e-waste processing facilities
and the environment around them and examines the developments and feasibility of the alternatives to BFR in EEE manufacture. 相似文献

Soil enzymes are indicators of microbial activities in soil and are often considered as an indicator of soil health and fertility. They are very sensitive to the agricultural practices, pH of the soil, nutrients, inhibitors and weather conditions. To understand the effect of an insecticide, acetamiprid (IUPAC Name: (E)-N1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridyl) methyl]-N2-cyano-N1-methyl acetamidine) on different soil enzyme activities, the experiments were conducted for three consecutive years (2003--2005) at control and cotton experimental fields of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and natural area (ridges with forest) in Delhi. The combined results for all three years were presented here to understand the impact of acetamiprid on soil enzyme activities. Acetamiprid was applied three times in one crop season after 41, 48 and 73 days of sowing, to control the pest. Soil of treated fields was analyzed for insecticide residues immediately after first insecticide treatment and thereafter at definite period. The residues of acetamiprid in experimental soil was varied from 0.30+/-0.13 to 22.67+/-0.2 microg g(-1)d.wt. soil, during the crop period of 2003. The insecticide residues for 2004 ranged between 0.59+/-0.38 and 13.42+/-0.71 microg g(-1)d.wt. soil and for 2005 it ranged between 0.48+/-0.22 and 19.81+/-0.33 microg g(-1)d.wt. soil. An average half life of acetamiprid in our treated field was 11.2+/-1.7 days for all three years. Similarly, the soil from natural area and control were also tested for insecticide residues. No detectable insecticide residues had been found. Soil from three localities i.e. natural, control and experimental fields were tested for different enzyme activities. Nitrate reductase, arginine deaminase, urease and dehydrogenase activities were high in natural soil in comparison to control soil and insecticide treated soil in all three experimental years. At the same time, nitrate reductase activity was all time low in acetamiprid treated soil. Acetamiprid had inhibitory effects on nitrate reductase, arginine deaminase and urease activities. After first treatment (43 days after crop sowing), nitrate reductase (41%), arginine deaminase (22%) and urease (35%) activities were declined. Dehydrogenase activity increased to 22% after first insecticide application. Enzyme activities were recovered at the end of each crop season. Therefore, it can be attributed that agricultural practices, weather conditions and use of acetamiprid might be responsible for the different level of enzyme activities in soil. 相似文献
