A survey of vernal, forest-understory herbs was conducted on 52 routes, 10 sample sites each, along the Susquehanna River and its major and minor tributaries in southeastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland. Mature forest stands, as compared to younger successional stands, had a greater diversity and cover of native understory herbs and greater frequencies of K -selected species such as Trillium flexipes and Dicentra canadensis . Vernal herbs with a high fidelity to the river corridor were likely to be more mesic in habitat preference, to occupy a more limited range of habitats, and to be less tolerant to disturbance than species that are also common in adjacent upland areas. The best vernal wildflower sites, which are usually in mesic or floodplain forest, may also be the most vulnerable to species loss if the canopy is removed or the forest is otherwise disturbed. Disturbance-sensitive herbs have been nearly extirpated from the Susquehanna tributaries by very intensive human development. Preservation of an appropriate matrix of microhabitats, particularly along the main river and at the mouths of the creeks, is critical to protecting the vernal flora of the region.  相似文献

Using the marine harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus californicus, the effects of phytoplankton feeding deterrents and toxins were differentiated and measured. Eight compounds were tested for feeding deterrence and toxicity responses: four apo-fucoxanthinoids (apo-10′-fucoxanthinal, apo-12′-fucoxanthinal, apo-12-fucoxanthinal, and apo-13′-fucoxanthinone) and four well-known phycotoxins (domoic acid, okadaic acid, microcystin-LR, and a mixture of PSP-1 toxins). Since several of these compounds exhibited both feeding deterrence and toxicity, a model was developed to deconvolute the observed toxicity response from the observed feeding deterrence response, and to classify these compounds based on the degree of toxicity and/or feeding deterrence they exhibited towards T. californicus. Microcystin-LR, the PSP-1 toxins, and the four apo-fucoxanthinoids behaved only as feeding deterrents at low concentrations. Okadaic acid exhibited both toxicity and feeding deterrence at low concentrations, with the threshold concentration for feeding deterrence at a lower level than the threshold concentration for toxicity. Domoic acid acted only as a toxin at low concentrations, with all decreases in feeding resulting from the death of the copepod. Received: 4 November 1996 / Accepted: 3 December 1996  相似文献

Run sizes of spring chinook salmon in the South Umpqua River in Oregon have declined dramatically since the early part of this century. Habitat degradation is thought to be an important factor contributing to the decline of this stock, and qualitative assessment suggests the stock is at moderate risk of extinction. We use data from this and similar stocks to develop an age-structured, density-dependent model of the population dynamics that incorporates both demographic and environmental stochasticity. Under the assumption of no further habitat destruction, the population is predicted to have a greater than 95% probability of persistence for 200 years. However, sensitivity analysis for the density-dependence estimated from historical run-return data shows that substantially lower predicted viabilities are also statistically consistent with the data. A model that simulates continued habitat degradation results in almost certain extinction within 100 years.  相似文献

A natural groundwater system modified by pollutant phenols and agricultural nitrate has been modelled in the laboratory by a series of sacrificial microcosm experiments. Samples of aquifer sediment and groundwater from the margin of the phenol plume were used to inoculate anaerobic microcosms enriched in nitrate and pollutant phenols. Rapid degradation of phenol and p-cresol was observed over a 35-day period leading to the generation of inorganic carbon and a number of transient intermediates. O-cresol proved to be recalcitrant on the experimental time-scale. A mass balance calculation shows that, during degradation, carbon was conserved in the aqueous phase. Groundwater-sediment interactions were monitored using carbon stable isotope data. A mass balance for solution TIC indicates thatp-cresol degradation stimulated the dissolution of sedimentary carbonate phases due to the formation of carbonic acid. Compound-specific carbon isotope analysis (GC-IRMS) was used to search for 13C enrichment in residual p-cresol. A slight enrichment trend (epsilon = -2.5/1000) was tentatively identified. The potential of this fractionation effect for obtaining in situ degradation rates is discussed. Results from the microcosm experiments help to explain the observed distribution of nitrate and phenols within the polluted aquifer.  相似文献

Since polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are generated in the combustion processes held responsible for the damages of acid rain, and they are introduced into the environment through other means as well, the high phototoxicity of the major pollutants, which are not carcinogenic, suggests that greater attention must be given to their environmental significance.  相似文献

Air pollutant emission from unconfined sources is an increasingly important environmental issue. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a ground-based optical remote-sensing method that enables direct measurement of fugitive emission flux from large area sources. Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) has been the primary technique for acquisition of pollutant concentration data used in this emission measurement method. For a number of environmentally important compounds, such as ammonia and methane, open-path tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (OP-TDLAS) is shown to be a viable alternative to Fourier transform spectroscopy for pollutant concentration measurements. Near-IR diode laser spectroscopy systems offer significant operational and cost advantages over Fourier transform instruments enabling more efficient implementation of the measurement strategy. This article reviews the EPA's fugitive emission measurement method and describes its multipath tunable diode laser instrument. Validation testing of the system is discussed. OP-TDLAS versus OP-FTIR correlation testing results for ammonia (R2 = 0.980) and methane (R2 = 0.991) are reported. Two example applications of tunable diode laser-based fugitive emission measurements are presented.  相似文献

Human exposure to insoluble and soluble nickel compounds is extensive. Besides wide usage in many industries, nickel compounds are contained in cigarette smoke and, in low levels, in ambient particulate matter. Soluble nickel particulate, especially nickel sulfate (NiSO4), has been associated with acute lung injury. To begin identifying genes controlling susceptibility to NiSO4, mean survival times (MSTs) of eight inbred mouse strains were determined after aerosol exposure. Whereas A/J (A) mice were sensitive, C57BL/6J (B6) mice survived nearly twice as long (resistant). Their offspring were similarly resistant, demonstrating heritability as a dominant trait. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of backcross mice generated from these strains identified a region on chromosome 6 significantly linked to survival time. Regions on chromosomes 1 and 12 were suggestive of linkage and regions on chromosomes 8, 9, and 16 contributed to the response. Haplotype analysis demonstrated that QTLs on chromosomes 6, 9, 12, and 16 could explain the MST difference between the parental strains. To complement QTL analysis results, cDNA microarray analysis was assessed following NiSO4 exposure of A and B6 mice. Significant expression changes were identified in one or both strains for >100 known genes. Closer evaluation of these changes revealed a temporal pattern of increased cell proliferation, extracellular matrix repair, hypoxia, and oxidative stress, followed by diminished surfactant proteins. Certain expressed sequence tags clustered with known genes, suggesting possible co-regulation and novel roles in pulmonary injury. Together, results from QTL and microarray analyses of nickel-induced acute lung injury survival allowed us to generate a short list of candidate genes.  相似文献

Technological advancements, environmental regulations, and emphasis on resource conservation and recovery have greatly reduced the environmental impacts of municipal solid waste (MSW) management, including emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). This study was conducted using a life-cycle methodology to track changes in GHG emissions during the past 25 years from the management of MSW in the United States. For the baseline year of 1974, MSW management consisted of limited recycling, combustion without energy recovery, and landfilling without gas collection or control. This was compared with data for 1980, 1990, and 1997, accounting for changes in MSW quantity, composition, management practices, and technology. Over time, the United States has moved toward increased recycling, composting, combustion (with energy recovery) and landfilling with gas recovery, control, and utilization. These changes were accounted for with historical data on MSW composition, quantities, management practices, and technological changes. Included in the analysis were the benefits of materials recycling and energy recovery to the extent that these displace virgin raw materials and fossil fuel electricity production, respectively. Carbon sinks associated with MSW management also were addressed. The results indicate that the MSW management actions taken by U.S. communities have significantly reduced potential GHG emissions despite an almost 2-fold increase in waste generation. GHG emissions from MSW management were estimated to be 36 million metric tons carbon equivalents (MMTCE) in 1974 and 8 MMTCE in 1997. If MSW were being managed today as it was in 1974, GHG emissions would be approximately 60 MMTCE.  相似文献

Visibility impairment from regional haze is a significant problem throughout the continental United States. A substantial portion of regional haze is produced by smoke from prescribed and wildland fires. Here we describe the integration of four simulation models, an array of GIS raster layers, and a set of algorithms for fire-danger calculations into a modeling framework for simulating regional-scale smoke dispersion. We focus on a representative fire season (2003) in the northwestern USA, on a 12 km domain, and track the simulated dispersion and concentration of PM2.5 over the course of the season. Simulated visibility reductions over national parks and wilderness areas are within the ranges of measured values at selected monitoring sites, although the magnitudes of peak events are underestimated because these include inputs other than fire. By linking the spatial and temporal patterns of haze-producing emissions to climatic variability, particularly synoptic weather patterns, and the stochastic nature of fire occurrence across the region, we can provide a robust method for estimating the quantity and distribution of fire-caused regional haze under climate-warming scenarios.  相似文献
