Summary Testes size was compared among 19 species of Japanese anurans in relation to their breeding systems. Although the mean body mass of the species examined varied markedly between 1.8 and 116 g, the mean proportion of testes mass to body mass was fairly constant at 0.2 to 0.4% across all species except the rhacophorid species. Foam-nest building rhacophorids had relatively large testes constituting more than 1% of their body mass. Among them, Rhacophorus arboreus had the largest, exceeding 5% of the body mass. Multi-male breeding, where a female is grasped by two or more males during spawning, occurs frequently in these rhacophorids, especially in R. arboreus. This close association between large testes size and multi-male breeding strongly suggests that sperm competition is an important factor affecting the evolution of relative testes size in Japanese anurans. Spatial and seasonal distribution pattern, life history and production of three species of Neomysis (Mysidacea) which commonly occur in northwestern subarctic Pacific coastal waters, were investigated throughout the year in the Akkeshi-ko estuary, northern Japan. The most abundant species Neomysis awatschensis (annual mean density: 179.8 inds. m−2, biomass: 108.8 mg DW m−2) occurred at the inner part of the estuary including low salinity areas with no clear preference for the seagrass bed. The second most abundant Neomysis mirabilis (mean density: 95.8 inds. m−2, biomass: 90.1 mg DW m−2) occurred at relatively saline seagrass site throughout the year. Occurrence of Neomysis czerniawskii in the estuary was limited to the seagrass bed during summer when their population mainly consisted of juveniles, suggesting that this species is a seasonal migrant between the estuary and the marine environment. Both N. awatschensis and N. mirabilis populations were composed of two generation types, a larger sized overwintering and smaller sized spring/summer generations; however, each species had a different reproductive strategy. N. awatschensis was characterized by fast growth to maturity at a smaller size than N. mirabilis with a relatively high fecundity during warm season, suggesting that this species is an r-strategist which can utilize opportunistically a wide variety of habitats. In contrast, the seagrass bed resident N. mirabilis was a K-strategist which matures at a larger size producing fewer but larger offspring. The annual production of N. awatschensis (0.57–0.70 g DW m−2, mean of the whole estuary) and N. mirabilis (0.58–0.68 g DW m−2, mean of the seagrass bed) at their respective habitats was comparable. Consequently, species-specific life history and distribution pattern are concluded to allow Neomysis spp. to coexist in the estuary and the high carrying capacity of seagrass bed is suggested to contribute to maintain their high biomass level.  相似文献

Foregut contents of calyptopes (the first feeding stage) ofEuphausia pacifica Hansen, collected from the Yellow Sea in June 1989, were examined using scanning electron microscopy with the dry-fracturing method. There was no clear evidence of phytoplankton ingestion by calyptopes. The foregut contents consisted entirely of amorphous organic detritus, crustacean remains and inorganic particles. The inorganic particles adhered to amorphous organic detritus, and bacterial populations were found on peritrophic membranes of fecal pellets which enveloped crustacean remains. These materials seemed to have originated from aggregates of organic and inorganic detritus. It is quite possible that the detrital aggregates are utilized extensively as food by calyptopes ofE. pacifica in the Yellow Sea.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in diversity and community structure of planktonic copepods at a shelf site in Sagami Bay, Japan was studied in relation to cross-shelf interaction of species components. Seasonal mesozooplankton samples were collected from the shelf station (St. M) of the north-west part of Sagami Bay from 1995 to 1997. Vertical multi-layered samples were collected near the center of Sagami Bay (St. P) in June 1996. A total 185 copepod species were identified from the two stations. We observed a clear seasonal succession in calanoid diversity and community structure at St. M from a simple shelf water community (>11 species) during spring blooming periods to highly diverse and mixed communities (ca 20–30 species) of shelf water species coupled with various Kuroshio Current species during late summer to autumn. Cluster and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination analyses showed two distinct calanoid community groups. One group, which included samples of St. M and the surface layer of St. P, consisted of shelf water species, such as Calanus sinicus, Ctenocalanus vanus, Paracalanus spp., and Kuroshio species, such as, Canthocalanus pauper, Scolecithrix danae, etc. The other cluster was restricted to the samples collected from mid and deep layers at St. P, which consisted of meso- and bathypelagic species and Oyashio species (cold-current species, such as Neocalanus cristatus, Pseudocalanus spp., Eucalanus bungii and Metridia pacifica). In the mid and deep layers at St. P, the population of dormant copepodid stage V (CV) of Eucalanus californicus and C. sinicus were dominant. The deep CV population of C. sinicus might be ecologically discriminated from the surface and shelf water population due to their larger body length and dormant life cycle. E. californicus was also collected at the shelf site during each spring bloom period, whereas the population might descend into the mid- and deep-layers of the central bay before summer. Our results suggest that the seasonal fluctuation of community structure in the shelf water was controlled by both physical (Kuroshio Current) and biological factors, i.e., spring bloom and ontogenetic vertical migration of E. californicus. In particular, transport and diffusion processes of Kuroshio Current in Sagami Bay played a key role in controlling the shelf water calanoid community.  相似文献

Although sex pheromone communication in the genus Ostrinia (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) has been studied intensively, acoustic communication in this genus has not been explored. In this study, we report that male-produced ultrasound serves as a courtship song in the Asian corn borer moth, O. furnacalis. Upon landing close to a pheromone-releasing female, a male showed a series of courtship behaviors involving emission of ultrasound. The sounds were produced when the wings were vibrated quickly in an upright position. The male song was composed of chirps, i.e., groups of pulses (duration of a chirp = 58.9 ms, 8.8 pulses/chirp), with a broadband frequency of 25–100 kHz. In flight tunnel experiments, deaf and hearing females showed a significant difference in the incidence of three behavioral responses to courting males, i.e., immediate acceptance, acceptance after walking, and rejection. Deaf females showed more ‘rejection’ and less ‘acceptance after walking’ than hearing females, indicating that the detection of male-produced ultrasound plays an important role in the acceptance of a male. The findings are discussed in the context of exploitation of receiver bias and mate choice.  相似文献

The present paper reports how stand size-structure dynamics due to competition between different-sized trees affect long-term forested water balance in Japanese cool-temperate planted stands (evergreen coniferous Cryptomeria japonica and deciduous coniferous Larix kaempferi stands) using a fully coupled multi-layered meteorological surface physics—terrestrial ecosystems model. The simulation captured the well-known annual variation in leaf area index (LAI) accurately with stand age in monocultured and even-aged stands; the occurrence of maximum LAI during the early growth stage and then a gradual decline followed by a steady state after the maximum LAI. The simulations also detected a high dependency of annual evapotranspiration (AETr) on LAI with stand age that is well known by prior observational researches. In the C. japonica (shade-tolerant late-successional species) stand, the relationship between annual net primary productivity of an individual tree (NPPind) and individual tree mass (w) changed from linear to a convex curve during self-thinning, indicating that the degree of asymmetric tree competition intensified with forest stand development. The higher degree of competitive asymmetry characterized by the convex-shaped NPPind-w relationship produced greater size inequality, i.e., the formation of trees stratified by height. Under such conditions, AETr and annual transpiration (ATr) were mainly regulated by larger trees. On the other hand, the NPPind-w relationships in the L. kaempferi (shade-intolerant early-successional species) stand were linear throughout the simulated period, indicating the lower degree of competitive asymmetry. Under such conditions, the growth of intermediate-sized trees was enhanced and these trees became a dominant source of AETr (and also ATr) during self-thinning. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the effects of ecophysiological parameters such as foliage profile (i.e., vertical distribution of leaf area density) of an individual tree (distribution pattern is described by the parameter η), the maximum carboxylation velocity (Vcmax0) and biomass allocation pattern of individual plant growth (μ1) on AETr, ATr and annual runoff (ARoff) showed that the temporal trends of AETr, ATr, ARoff and NPPind-w relationships were completely the same as those in the control simulations. However, the NPPind-w relationship during self-thinning indicated higher degrees of competitive asymmetry when η or Vcmax0 were greater than those in the control simulation and generated greater AETr and ATr and thus smaller ARoff. We found that more asymmetric tree competition brings about greater size inequality between different-sized trees and thus more evapotranspiration and less runoff in a forest stand. Overall, our simulation approach revealed that not only LAI dynamics but also plant competition, and thus size-structure dynamics, in a forest ecosystem are essential to long-term future projections of forested water balance.  相似文献
