Heavy metals and toxic organic contaminants are found at numerous industrial and military sites. The generally poor performance of conventional pump‐and‐treat schemes has made the development of improved methods for contaminated site remediation a significant environmental priority. One such innovative method is cyclodextrin‐enhanced flushing of the contaminated porous media and groundwater. Cyclodextrin is a glucose‐based molecule that is produced on industrial scales by microorganisms. Over the last years, several cyclodextrin derivatives have received extensive research interest. It was shown that cyclodextrins can significantly enhance the solubility of toxic organics, and in some cases, heavy metals and radioactive isotopes. As a sugar, cyclodextrin is considered relatively non‐toxic to humans, plants, and soil microbes. Thus, there are minimal health‐related concerns associated with the injection of cyclodextrin into the subsurface, which is an inherent advantage for use of cyclodextrins as a remediation agent. Animals balance feeding and anti-predator behaviors at various temporal scales. When risk is infrequent or brief, prey can
postpone feeding in the short term and temporally allocate feeding behavior to less risky periods. If risk is frequent or
lengthy, however, prey must eventually resume feeding to avoid fitness consequences. Species may exhibit different behavioral
strategies, depending on the fitness tradeoffs that exist in their environment or across their life histories. North Pacific
flatfishes that share juvenile rearing habitat exhibit a variety of responses to predation risk, but their response to risk
frequency has not been examined. We observed the feeding and anti-predator behaviors of young-of-the-year English sole (Parophrys vetulus), northern rock sole (Lepidopsetta polyxystra), and Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis)—three species that exhibit divergent anti-predator strategies—following exposure to three levels of predation risk: no risk,
infrequent (two exposures/day), and frequent (five exposures/day). The English sole responded to the frequent risk treatment
with higher feeding rates than during infrequent risk, following a pattern of behavioral response that is predicted by the
risk allocation hypothesis; rock sole and halibut did not follow the predicted pattern, but this may be due to the limited
range of treatments. Our observations of unique anti-predator strategies, along with differences in foraging and species-specific
ecologies, suggest divergent trajectories of risk allocation for the three species. 相似文献

Stabilizing global greenhouse gas concentrations at levels to avoid significant climate risks will require massive “decarbonization” of all the major economies over the next few decades, in addition to the reduced emissions from other GHGs and carbon sequestration. Achieving the necessary scale of emissions reductions will require a multifaceted policy effort to support a broad array of technological and behavioral changes. Change on this scale will require sound, well-thought-out strategies. In this article, we outline some core principles, drawn from recent social science research, for guiding the design of clean technology policies, with a focus on energy. The market should be encouraged to make good choices: pricing carbon emissions and other environmental damage, removing distorting subsidies and barriers to competition, and supporting RD&D broadly. More specific policies are required to address particular market failures and barriers. Several theoretical, analytical, and institutional difficulties have impeded the development and application of the assessment of cumulative environmental impacts. Watershed development on coastal wetlands offers an ideal context for evaluating the land disturbance target approach to cumulative impact assessment. A model land use planning system involving a time series approach was developed for Elkhorn Slough in California. The approach included four major components: evaluation of erosion susceptibility, measurement of land disturbance, establishment of a land disturbance target, and a comparison of existing and target land disturbance values. Further research is needed to test the transferability of the approach in a wide range of coastal watersheds and to verify the applicability of the methods to other cumulative impact problems. 相似文献

Conventional approaches to evaluation of environmental programs have tended to limit themselves to restricted measures of
program effectiveness. This paper shows how a social learning approach can be incorporated into evaluating public environmental
programs. A social learning approach is particularly suited to complex environmental challenges which are inherently difficult
to understand, predict, and manage, thus complicating the evaluation process. The paper presents an Australian case study
of dryland salinity management where there are major knowledge barriers impeding conventional management techniques. The research
presented in this paper focused on evaluating a public demonstration program to track its impact through its design, implementation,
and monitoring phases. The paper shows that, by incorporating social learning principles and practices, program evaluation

This paper investigated the effect of goal and mindset specificity on goal-related behavior in the environmental domain. Two studies demonstrated that goal-related behavior was maximized when participants focused on an abstract goal in combination with a specific mindset, or when they focused on a specific goal in combination with an abstract mindset. When goals and mindsets instead matched in terms of abstractness, goal-related behavior was reduced. Study 2 demonstrated that the effect of goal specificity on behavior was mediated by different processes in each of the mindset conditions. When mindsets were abstract, self-efficacy mediated the positive effect of specific goals on behavior; when mindsets were specific, the value of collective environmental action mediated the positive effect of abstract goals on behavior. The results are discussed in the framework of a complementarity approach. It is argued that complementarity of levels of specificity of goals and mindsets may affect behavior particularly strongly in domains where the discrepancy between the abstract and the specific is large (e.g. the environmental domain). 相似文献
