In recent years, compound specific isotope analyses (CSIA) have developed into one of the most powerful tools for the quantification of in situ biodegradation of organic contaminants. In this approach, the calculation of the extent of biodegradation of organic contaminants in aquifers is usually based on the Rayleigh equation, and thus neglects physical transport processes such as dispersion that contribute to contaminant dilution in aquifers. Here we combine compound specific isotope analyses with a conservative transport model to study the attenuation of aromatic hydrocarbons at a former gasworks site. The conservative transport model was first used to simulate concentration reductions caused by dilution at wells downgradient of a BTEX source. In a second step, the diluted concentrations, together with the available stable carbon isotope ratios and carbon fractionation factors for benzene, toluene and o-xylene were applied in the Rayleigh equation to quantify the degree of biodegradation at each of those wells. At the investigated site, where other attenuation processes such as sorption and volatilisation were proven to be negligible, the combined approach is recommended for benzene, which represents a compound for which the effect of biodegradation is comparable to or less than the effect of dilution. As demonstrated for toluene and o-xylene, the application of the Rayleigh equation alone is sufficient if dilution can be proved to be insignificant in comparison to biodegradation. The analysis also suggests that the source width and the position of the observation wells relative to the plume center line are significantly related to the degree of dilution.  相似文献

The effect of copper on adsorption of p-nitrophenol on two typical Chinese soils was investigated using a batch-equilibration method. Adsorption experiments were carried out when both copper and p-nitrophenol were adsorbed simultaneously, and when copper was previously adsorbed on soils. It was observed that adsorption of p-nitrophenol decreased with increasing copper concentrations thereby indicating a competition between copper and p-nitrophenol for occupying the adsorption sites on soils. Moisture increased the hydrated sphere and the acidity of water surrounding the cation, which further reduced the adsorption of p-nitrophenol. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study provided the direct evidence for the coordination of p-nitrophenol sorbed by soils with metal cation in n-hexane system. It was observed that the perturbations included a red shift of the nu(asym) (NO) band, a concomitant blue-shift of the nu(sym) (NO) band and a blue-shift of C-N band when compared with the infrared spectra obtained from water solution.  相似文献

In safety assessments of nuclear facilities, a wide range of radioactive isotopes and their potential hazard to a large assortment of organisms and ecosystem types over long time scales need to be considered. Models used for these purposes have typically employed approaches based on generic reference organisms, stylised environments and transfer functions for biological uptake exclusively based on bioconcentration factors (BCFs). These models are of non-mechanistic nature and involve no understanding of uptake and transport processes in the environment, which is a severe limitation when assessing real ecosystems. In this paper, ecosystem models are suggested as a method to include site-specific data and to facilitate the modelling of dynamic systems. An aquatic ecosystem model for the environmental transport of radionuclides is presented and discussed. With this model, driven and constrained by site-specific carbon dynamics and three radionuclide specific mechanisms: (i) radionuclide uptake by plants, (ii) excretion by animals, and (iii) adsorption to organic surfaces, it was possible to estimate the radionuclide concentrations in all components of the modelled ecosystem with only two radionuclide specific input parameters (BCF for plants and Kd). The importance of radionuclide specific mechanisms for the exposure to organisms was examined, and probabilistic and sensitivity analyses to assess the uncertainties related to ecosystem input parameters were performed. Verification of the model suggests that this model produces analogous results to empirically derived data for more than 20 different radionuclides.  相似文献

We examined the species composition and horizontal distribution of myctophid fish larvae in the transition region of the western North Pacific during the early summer. In total, 4,760 myctophid larvae were collected at 44 stations; 18 species of myctophids from 15 genera were collected, and the 8 most abundant species accounted for >95% of larvae. The distribution patterns of these larvae were well defined by the hydrographic structures of the study area including the Oyashio and Kuroshio fronts, the Subarctic Boundary, and a warm core ring. The horizontal distribution patterns of the eight dominant species were categorized into three groups: northern transition water (Stenobrachius nannochir, Tarletonbeania taylori, and Lampanyctus jordani), southern transition water (Symbolophorus californiensis, Diaphus theta, and Nannobrachium regale), and Kuroshio (Myctophum asperum and Diaphus garmani). The Subarctic Boundary defined the distributions of the northern and southern transition-water groups. The importance of areas of western North Pacific transition water as spawning and nursery grounds for subarctic, transitional, and subtropical myctophid fishes was indicated by the relationship between the horizontal distribution patterns of larvae, juveniles, and adults and the physical oceanographic structures.Communicated by T. Veneridae, a cosmopolitan and ubiquitous family in world-wide littoral environments, lists more than 500 species, many of which are often subject to intensive commercial exploitation due to their numerical dominance in benthic communities. Historically, the family has been divided into 12 subfamilies by M. Keen and, even though this taxonomical arrangement was adopted for convenience and does not necessarily reflect genetic relationships, as suggested by Keen herself, this classification is still accepted. To contribute to clarify the systematics and phylogeny of Veneridae, the portion of the nucleotide sequence corresponding to domains IV and V of the gene encoding the large subunit of mitochondrial ribosomal RNA was analysed in 14 species representative of 10 genera belonging to 6 different subfamilies. The results obtained using the maximum-parsimony and neighbour-joining methods indicate that the current placement of the genera into subfamilies does not always reflect a natural subdivision. In addition, the six species of Tapetinae studied, though confirmed to be a monophyletic clade, do not exhibit a correct attribution at the genus level.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of the south Pacific kelp Lessonia nigrescens of the coast of Valdivia, Chile (40°S), were investigated by exposing its different thallus parts, fronds, stipes and holdfasts, to UV radiation in the laboratory. Biologically effective doses (BEDphotoinhibition300) between 400 and 800 kJ m−2 were required for a 40% inhibition in photosynthesis under UVA+UVB radiation. At BEDphotoinhibition300 close to 250 kJ m−2 (in treatments without UVB), the inhibition of photosynthesis did not exceed 20%. These UV doses were in the range of current daily doses measured in Valdivia on cloudless summer days. In general, exposure to UVB for periods longer than 12 h reduced photosynthesis, measured as maximal quantum yield (F v/F m) and electron transport. The fronds were the most UV-sensitive section of this alga, coinciding with the highest pigments contents and carbon fixation. Evidence of a photodamage was also seen. After a 48 h exposure to PAR+UVA+UVB, a decrease of F v/F m in the fronds was close to 41%, while in the stipes and holdfasts it was 12 and 18%, respectively. Although the thalli from the different size classes showed marked differences in their morphology and morphometry, no obvious differences in the UV tolerance of the fronds were detected. The results indicated that the UV-related responses are integrated in the suite of morpho-functional adaptations of the alga. Although the fronds are spatially more exposed to solar radiation than basal structures (stipes and holdfast), due their high turnover rate they may compensate better detrimental effects of UV. In contrast, stipes and the holdfast are key support structures characterized by low replacement rates and designed to confer hydrodynamic resistance to drag forces.  相似文献

The reduction of Cr(VI) by humic substances from leonardite and peat was investigated by capillary zone electrophoresis at various pHs. Both humic materials reduced Cr(VI) at pH 5.4, but not at basic pH. The capacity of leonardite humic substances to reduce Cr(VI) was lower than that of peat humic substances. Fe(III) accelerated the reduction of Cr(VI) by peat humic substances, but not by leonardite humic substances. Cr(VI) reduction mechanisms are proposed. The coal humic substances seem more suitable for remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated sites.  相似文献

In most protandrous species, male size advantage is generally regarded as unimportant in determining the timing of protandrous sex change. In pandalid shrimp, the size/age of male sex change often fluctuates among years and populations, but the adaptive significance of late reversing males (LRMs) is not well understood. This study experimentally examined the adaptive significance of LRMs in the protandrous pandalid shrimp Pandalus latirostris Rathbun. Field and laboratory studies were carried out in August–September of 1998–2002 on P. latirostris in Notoro Lagoon, Japan (44°03′N; 144°10′E). Mature females that had molted (i.e. mate receptive) were tethered in the field and their mating behavior with wild males was observed. Copulations occurred with a single male at a time, although other males could sequentially mate with a tethered female. Because tethered females rejected male approaches, males had difficulty transferring their spermatophores. In the laboratory, males copulated with non-tethered, recently molted females for only 15 min after molting. Recently molted females are wary of potential predators, since their soft exoskeleton makes them particularly vulnerable. Fast access by males enhanced fertilization success in this shrimp. The effect of male size on mating success in the laboratory was examined. Both small and large males successfully inseminated females in the absence of competitors. In experiments where large, medium, and small males competed for a female, however, larger males guarded females longer than smaller males, until the female molted and became receptive. Moreover, large males were more successful at copulating once molting occurred. These results imply that male-male competition drives delayed sex change in some situations.  相似文献
