Belgrade, capital city of Serbia, has over 1,600,000 inhabitants and over 400,000 vehicles trafficking every day on its streets.
The investigation of soil pollution was performed by sequential extraction analysis to investigate the availability of potentially
toxic metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Cu, Cr and Mn) under different oxidation and pH conditions. All investigated metals were
mainly extracted from soils with neutral or acidic extractants. Serious pollution was observed along roads and streets with
high traffic frequency, but Pb and Ni pollution was the highest since their concentrations exceed both soil Serbian standard
and Canadian guidance values and is characteristic for all investigated sites. Cd, Cu, Cr and Zn concentrations are moderately
high since they are between Canadian guideline and Serbian standard. 相似文献

Efficiency of metabisulfite and a commercial steel wool as reducing agents in the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewaters was evaluated.
Chromium(VI) was converted to Cr(III), precipitated with NaOH, and removed by filtration. A reduction of more than 1.0 × 105 and 4.0 × 105 fold in total Cr and the Cr(VI) concentrations, respectively, was observed by employing steel wool masses as low as 0.4420 g
to 30-mL solutions of wastewater. Chromium(III) hydroxide obtained after the treatment was recycled and used as marker in
cattle nutrition studies. The liquid residue obtained after the treatment was reused as precipitation agent replacing NaOH. 相似文献

After the deceleration of the postglacial marine transgression, the German North Sea coast was subject to deposition of a complex pattern of subtidal to terrestrial facies. This study aims at reconstructing these facies changes in the ‘Land Wursten’ region (Lower Saxony) by focussing on so-called dwog horizons (incipient soil horizons of the pre-engineered salt marshes). We explore their implications for relative sea-level reconstructions and their indication for early settlement activities. Archive drilling data (1960, provided by the ‘Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie’) were analysed to create five high-resolution stratigraphic cross sections. Three new drilling records were subjected to sedimentological and microfaunal investigations and interpreted to verify and calibrate the archive data. Two dwog horizons were found and 14C-AMS dated. We found basal salt marsh deposits inundated by a high-energy event and covered by tidal flat sediments. The thick tidal flat unit is again overlain by salt marsh deposits indicating the transition from a shallow marine to a terrestrial environment where dwogs were developed and covered by episodic marine incursions. The ages of the dwogs (1128–969 cal BC; cal AD 1426–1467) do not correlate with known layers of adjacent settlement sites and are critically discussed. However, we show that they correlate with phases of stagnant regional relative sea level (RSL) and can be used as RSL indicators. The combined archive and modern data provide valuable information for the RSL reconstruction and palaeoenvironmental changes. However, further research is recommended to accomplish more detailed information about coastal response during the Holocene sea-level changes and implications for settlement dynamics. 相似文献

This paper analyses the contents and species distributions of rare earth elements (REEs) in the water-suspended particulate-sediment
system of the Baotou section of the Yellow River, China, with known anthropogenic REE input from industrial discharges. The
major forms of REEs were suspended and dissolved in the mainstream and the tributaries of the Baotou section, respectively.
The concentrations of the dissolved and suspended REEs had the same trends in the overlying water along the mainstream, which
increased from the Seqi section (site A) to the mouth of the Sidaosha River (site D), reaching a maximum value at site D,
and tending to decrease thereafter. The contents of REEs in sediment cores showed enrichment with light rare earth elements
(LREEs). The bound to carbonates and to Fe–Mn oxides are the major forms of REE in the secondary phase and the REE exhibited
LREE enrichment pattern and moderate Eu depletion in suspended particulates and surface sediments. The contents and species
distributions of REEs in the water-suspended particulate-sediment system of the Baotou section suggest that the anthropogenic
source of REEs from Baotou city have enhanced REE accumulation to the Baotou section. This information is important for predicting
possible pollution resulting from anthropogenic REE input into rivers. 相似文献

Settlement is a major determinant of intertidal populations. However, the energy costs of lost larvae are very high. Accordingly,
arrival and attachment on suitable substrata are essential requirements for species’ survival. On the intertidal, the presence
of cues left by adult or juvenile conspecifics could be vital for the successful establishment of larvae arriving on the shore.
Two mussel species, the indigenous Perna perna and the invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis, co-occur on the lower eulittoral zone on the south coast of South Africa. P.
perna dominates the low and M. galloprovincialis the high mussel zones, with co-existence in the mid mussel zone. This study tested the hypothesis of settlement selectivity
for conspecifics in these two mussel species, to understand whether the final adult distribution of mussels on the shores
is determined by active behavioural and chemical mechanisms. Preferential selection by larvae for conspecifics was tested
in the field during the peak settlement period in 2004 in natural mussel beds across zones and through manipulative experiments
in the mid-zone where the species co-exist. On natural beds, settlement was determined by counts of settlers attached over
48 h onto artificial collectors. Collectors were placed on beds of P. perna and M. galloprovincialis present at both high- and low-adult densities, as well as in mixed beds. On such natural beds, settlers of both species consistently
favored low-zone P. perna beds. Settlement patterns over 24 h onto experimentally created mussel patches consisting of P.
perna, M. galloprovincialis or the two species combined beds, set in the mixed zone, did not conform with the results of the natural beds study: settlers
of both species settled with no discrimination among different patches. The results indicate that mussels, which are sedentary,
lack attraction to conspecifics at settlement. This highlights the importance of tidal height in setting settlement rates,
and of post-settlement events in shaping populations of these broadcast spawners. 相似文献

The effect of salinity on survival, bioenergetics and predation risk was studied in two common mud crabs in the Gulf of Mexico,
Eurypanopeus depressus and Panopeus simpsoni. Eurypanopeus survived better at low salinities (the 28-day LC50 of E. depressus was 0.19 PSU compared with 6.97 PSU for P. simpsoni). While low salinity increased energy expenditure and reduced food consumption and absorption, resulting in lower scope for
growth, identical responses to salinity occurred in both species. Both species also had similar salinity-dependent patterns
of hyper-osmoregulation. Because these physiological mechanisms could not explain differences between the two species in salinity
tolerance, we explored the effect of salinity on competition for refugia. Eurypanopeus had higher resource holding potential for refugia, especially at low salinity. As a consequence it had lower predation risk
to blue crabs in laboratory experiments. The higher tolerance by E. depressus for low salinities, and greater resource holding potential for refugia may explain why it has a more euryhaline distribution

To elucidate the effects of light, site, temperature, time after emersion, and wind speed on foraging attempt rate (FAR) (attempts/unit time) and feeding success (FS) (captures/attempts) in the obligate visual foraging shorebird, Kentish plovers Charadrius alexandrinus, field observations were performed at a sandflat in Tokyo Bay, using a visible-light telescope camcorder during the day and a thermal infrared telescope camcorder at night. The re-analysis capability and frame-step replay of highly magnified video-images can contribute to accurate measurement of feeding behaviour over conventional focal observation techniques. Kentish plovers increased both FAR and FS in areas of high prey (polychaetes and crabs) density, resulting in a synergistic increase in feeding rate (captures/unit time). In areas of high prey abundance, FAR was higher at lower wind speed. FS increased with increasing time after emersion. Increasing temperatures induced a positive effect on FAR but a negative effect on FS. The effect of light on FAR was not observed; however, time-to-defecation occurrence was 2.2-fold shorter at night than during the day, indicating that feeding rate and FS are higher at night. These results are attributable to an increase in availability of cues due to higher nocturnal activity in polychaetes. Since available foraging time (emersion time) at night was 1.7-fold longer than during the day in the present study period, Kentish plovers could capture 3.7-fold (2.2 × 1.7) more prey at night than during the day. Results from this study indicate that nocturnal feeding in overwintering plovers is not a compensation but a major foraging activity to meet their energy requirements. 相似文献

Climate change associated with sea level rise (SLR) is one of the major environmental concerns of today. This paper presents
an assessment of the impacts of sea level rise on the coastal zone of Kanyakumari District in Tamilnadu, India. Digital Elevation
Model (DEM) combined with overlay techniques in GIS are used in determining the inundation zones along the coastal region.
The analysis evaluated the impact on coastal fishing villages, landuse, tourist spots and sensitive areas under threat. The
vulnerability of the coastal areas in Kanyakumari to inundation was quantified, based on the projected sea level rise scenarios
of 0.5 and 1 m. Our findings reveal that approximately 13 km2 of the land area of Kanyakumari would be permanently inundated due to SLR. This would result in loss of land, alteration
of the coastal zone and affects coastal ecosystem. From the study, the mitigation measures (engineering measures) and Coastal
Zone Management practices that can be taken to protect human life and property from sea level rise are suggested. 相似文献

We tested joint effects of predator loss and increased resource availability on the grazers’ trophic level and the propagation
of trophic interactions in a benthic food web by excluding larger predatory fish from cages and manipulating nutrients in
the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. The combination of nutrient enrichment and excluding larger predators induced an increase
in medium-sized predatory fish (three-spined stickleback). The meso-predator fish in turn did not change the total abundance
of the invertebrate herbivores, but did cause a substantial shift in their community composition towards the dominance of
gastropods by reducing amphipods by 40–60%, while gastropods were left unchanged. The shift in grazer composition generated
a 23 times higher producer biomass, but only under nutrient enrichment. Our results show that top-predator declines can substantially
shift the species composition at the grazers’ level, but that cascading effects on producers by a trophic cascade strongly

Sublethal predation can be a significant trophic pathway in sediment communities, and the regeneration of damaged tissue affects
the activity, growth, and reproduction of prey. A field experiment was conducted 12–18 July 2010 in the Tijuana Estuary, California
(+32.56617°, −117.13152°), to measure in situ rates of body growth and palp regeneration of the polychaete Polydora cornuta after simulating sublethal predation by removing 2, 1, or 0 palps from labeled individuals. After 3 days in the field, individuals
that had 2 palps removed grew significantly slower than worms that had 0 palps removed; 1-palp worms had intermediate growth.
After 6 days in the field, rates of body growth were faster than those of worms recovered after 3 days, with similar trends
among the three palp treatments. During the 3-day transplantation, removed palps regenerated to half the initial length of
unmanipulated palps. After 6 days, palp lengths did not differ significantly among treatment groups, indicating complete regeneration.
The regeneration rate of removed palps was significantly faster than the growth rate of undamaged palps, and palp regeneration
rate did not differ significantly between worms that had 1 or 2 palps removed. 相似文献
