The proton and Cd binding capacities of microbially produced exopolysaccharides, EPS, were quantified by the determination of stability constants and the concentration of complexing sites using H(+) or Cd(2+) selective electrodes in dynamic titrations. The influence of ionic strength, pH and the Cd to EPS ratio was evaluated over large concentration ranges. The applicability of the non-ideal competitive adsorption isotherm combined with a Donnan electrostatics approach was tested with respect to the EPS. Proton and cadmium binding data were compared with literature data examining other ubiquitous environmental ligands including humic substances, alginate, bacteria, etc. Subsequent modelling of Cd speciation in aquatic (fresh and marine waters) and soil systems suggested that the exopolysaccharides would play non-negligible role, under most conditions. The quantitative information provided in this paper thus represents an important advance in our understanding of Cd transport, bioavailability and impact in aquatic and terrestrial systems. 相似文献

In this study, the effects of exogenous mercury (HgCl(2)) on time-dependent changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase and ascorbate peroxidase), lipid peroxidation, chlorophyll content and protein oxidation in cucumber seedlings (Cucumis sativus L.) were investigated. Cucumber seedlings were exposed to from 0 to 500microM of HgCl(2) during 10 and 15 days. Hg was readily absorbed by growing seedlings, and its content was greater in the roots than the in shoot. Time and concentration-dependent reduction in root and shoot length was observed at all concentrations tested, equally in the roots and shoot, at both 10 and 15 days. At 50microM HgCl(2), root fresh weight of 15-day-old seedlings increased, and at other concentrations, it reduced. For 10-day-old seedlings, reduction in root and shoot fresh biomass was observed. At 15 days, only at 50microM HgCl(2) was there no observed reduction in shoot fresh biomass. Dry weight of roots increased at 500microM both at 10 and 15 days, though at 250microM HgCl(2) there was only an increase at 15 days. There was a significant effect on shoot dry weight at all concentrations tested. Hg-treated seedlings showed elevated levels of lipid peroxides with a concomitant increase in protein oxidation levels, and decreased chlorophyll content when exposed to between 250 and 500microM of HgCl(2). At 10 days, catalase activity increased in seedlings at a moderately toxic level of Hg, whereas at the higher concentration (500microM), there was a marked inhibition. Using CO2 perturbation experiments, we examined the pre- and post-settlement growth responses of a dominant biofouling tubeworm (Hydroides elegans) to a range of pH. In three different experiments, embryos were reared to, or past, metamorphosis in seawater equilibrated to CO2 values of about 480 (control), 980, 1,480, and 2,300 μatm resulting in pH values of around 8.1 (control), 7.9, 7.7, and 7.5, respectively. These three decreased pH conditions did not affect either embryo or larval development, but both larval calcification at the time of metamorphosis and early juvenile growth were adversely affected. During the 24-h settlement assay experiment, half of the metamorphosed larvae were unable to calcify tubes at pH 7.9 while almost no tubes were calcified at pH 7.7. Decreased ability to calcify at decreased pH may indicate that these calcifying tubeworms may be one of the highly threatened species in the future ocean. 相似文献

A new version of a classical method was applied to study the distribution of natural radionuclides (238U, 230Th, and 226Ra) in the soil fractions obtained by a sequential extraction procedure. The potential significance of the fractions obtained with this method was tested on two very similar soils but with very different contents of the three radionuclides, collected in the proximity of a disused uranium mine located in the Extremadura region in the south-west of Spain. The results confirmed that, if only non-residual fractions are considered, the sequential method applied shows a characteristic speciation pattern of these natural radionuclides in this soil matrix, i.e., the distribution of each of the three radionuclides was very similar for the two soil samples. 相似文献

A detailed and multidisciplinary study of physical and biotic factors of a coastal sector of southern Italy, the Pineta della foce del Garigliano SCI (Site of Community Importance) area, has been carried out in the frame of the European research project LIFE + Nature & Biodiversity PROVIDUNE. We evaluated the degree of dunes vulnerability (Dune Vulnerability Index, DVI) and sustainable anthropogenic load (carrying capacity) of the emerged beach of the study area, which is largely affected by shoreline retreat and degradation of dune habitat. The values of about 0.6 of the DVI in the two key sectors of the study area suggest a high level of vulnerability of beach/dune system due to both natural and human factors. The partial vulnerability index related to the geomorphological condition exhibits the highest values, as a consequence of a coastal system largely affected by recent and present-day beach erosion and severe hydrodynamics processes. Several inadequate human practises have been recognized in the study area whose impact appears to be an important factor in controlling the reduction of the beach-dune system resilience. Integrated analysis of DVI and carrying capacity suggests that the northern and central sectors of the study area have a high level of dune vulnerability due to hydrodynamic and geomorphological factors whereas the human impact can be considered relatively less important. The southern sector of the study area is featured by a well-developed infrastructure system, which is able to assure a sustainable beach occupation. Nevertheless, significant interventions such as dune replacement by permanent or ephemeral infrastructures, uncontrolled pedestrian or vehicular access and inappropriate use of mechanical beach cleaning have been recognized in this sector of the beach. These long-lasting impacts have promoted the dismantling of large sector of the dune habitats. Obtained results allowed identifying the critical area where appropriate actions can be performed for the mitigation of impacts, the conservation of dune habitats and their sustainable use. 相似文献

Nature provides life-support services which do not merely constitute the basis for ecosystem integrity but also benefit human
societies. The importance of such multiple outputs is often ignored or underestimated in environmental planning and decision
making. The economic valuation of ecosystem functions or services has been widely used to make these benefits economically
visible and thus address this deficiency. Alternatively, the relative importance of the components of ecosystem value can
be identified and compared by means of multi-criteria evaluation. Hereupon, this article proposes a conceptual framework that
couples ecosystem function analysis, multi criteria evaluation and social research methodologies for introducing an ecosystem
function-based planning and management approach. The framework consists of five steps providing the structure of a participative
decision making process which is then tested and ratified, by applying the discrete multi-criteria method NAIADE, in the Kalloni
Natura 2000 site, on Lesbos, Greece. Three scenarios were developed and evaluated with regard to their impacts on the different
types of ecosystem functions and the social actors’ value judgements. A conflict analysis permitted the better elaboration
