Variation in urea excretion in the gulf toadfishOpsanus beta   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Under long-term (24 h) control measurements, significant urea was excreted (15 to 90% of excreted nitrogen) byOpsanus beta (Goode and Bean) collected in 1989 from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA. Urea excretion rates and plasma urea concentrations were not affected by antibiotic treatments which decreased intestinal microbe populations. These results suggest that nitrogen recycling by gut microbe urease is probably not significant in this species. Urea excretion rates increased significantly following 8 h of air-exposure and in response to high levels of NH4Cl. These results suggest that urea is synthesized and excreted by the toadfish primarily in situations that limit ammonia excretion. Thus, the ornithineurea cycle in the toadfish liver primarily maintains low concentrations of ammonia within the fish. High levels of variability in urea excretion rates and variation in response to air-exposure suggest that urea synthetic rates are affected by immediate past environmental conditions.  相似文献

Ambient data from Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) monitors are analyzed to evaluate the spatial structure of SO4 and NO3 aerosols in the mid-Atlantic region. Sub-weekly, seasonal, and annual data values are compared between the IMPROVE Washington, DC, site and three rural sites. Synoptic perturbations are compared between sites to quantify similarities in short-term temporal perturbations of SO4 and NO3. Based on these comparisons between the rural and urban IMPROVE monitors, the spatial structure of SO4 shows broad regional homogeneity that is recognizable from both the long-term average values and the short-term variations. NO3 data on a seasonal and annual basis show much larger spatial gradients between the urban Washington monitor and the three rural monitors than do SO4 data. Short-term NO3 perturbations at the three rural monitors also differ significantly from those at the Washington site. These dissimilarities in NO3 levels between the rural and urban IMPROVE monitors on both short-term and longer-term time scales indicate little homogeneity of NO3 aerosols in the mid-Atlantic region considered here. The volatility of NO3 aerosols and the removal rate of HNO3 via dry deposition could contribute to the spatial variability differences shown here between SO4 and NO3.  相似文献

The extent to which very short peak widths, peak frequency, sampling time and post-sampling/pre-capping time impact upon occupational exposure measurements of toluene has been investigated using diffusive tubes. Additionally, the effect of the width of the peak on the estimation of peak maximum concentration and time-weighted average (TWA) concentration from real-time instruments (photoionisation detectors-PIDs) was also studied, and their responses modelled. No clear differences were perceived between diffusive and pumped tube results. Mean biases of -5 to +6% were recorded but no trend could be distinguished with respect to any of the variables examined; the main source of uncertainty was attributed to analytical uncertainty. The diffusive tubes can therefore be used to measure short term transient toluene concentrations (e.g. 5 s duration) over short (15 min) exposure periods. The two slower responding PIDs (t50 = 4 s) underestimated the maximum concentration of short term peaks having durations less than 10 s. The other three PIDs (t50 < or = 2 s) only significantly underestimated the maximum concentration of short term peaks having durations of 2 s and below. Pulse duration appeared to affect the PID's estimation of peak height more than peak area (TWA concentration).  相似文献

Relational thinking has recently gained increasing prominence across academic disciplines in an attempt to understand complex phenomena in terms of constitutive processes and relations. Interdisciplinary fields of study, such as science and technology studies (STS), the environmental humanities, and the posthumanities, for example, have started to reformulate academic understanding of nature-cultures based on relational thinking. Although the sustainability crisis serves as a contemporary backdrop and in fact calls for such innovative forms of interdisciplinary scholarship, the field of sustainability research has not yet tapped into the rich possibilities offered by relational thinking. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is to identify relational approaches to ontology, epistemology, and ethics which are relevant to sustainability research. More specifically, we analyze how relational approaches have been understood and conceptualized across a broad range of disciplines and contexts relevant to sustainability to identify and harness connections and contributions for future sustainability-related work. Our results highlight common themes and patterns across relational approaches, helping to identify and characterize a relational paradigm within sustainability research. On this basis, we conclude with a call to action for sustainability researchers to co-develop a research agenda for advancing this relational paradigm within sustainability research, practice, and education.  相似文献

The objective of this research is to characterize the variability of trace metals in the Rio Santa watershed based on synoptic sampling applied at a large scale. To that end, we propose a combination of methods based on the collection of water, suspended sediments, and riverbed sediments at different points of the watershed within a very limited period. Forty points within the Rio Santa watershed were sampled between June 21 and July 8, 2013. Forty water samples, 36 suspended sediments, and 34 riverbed sediments were analyzed for seven trace metals. The results, which were normalized using the USEPA guideline for water and sediments, show that the Rio Santa water exhibits Mn concentrations higher than the guideline at more than 50% of the sampling points. As is the second highest contaminating element in the water, with approximately 10% of the samples containing concentrations above the guideline. Sediments collected in the Rio Santa riverbed were heavily contaminated by at least four of the tested elements at nearly 85% of the sample points, with As presenting the highest normalized concentration, at more than ten times the guideline. As, Cd, Fe, Pb, and Zn present similar concentration trends in the sediment all along the Rio Santa.The findings indicate that care should be taken in using the Rio Santa water and sediments for purposes that could affect the health of humans or the ecosystem. The situation is worse in some tributaries in the southern part of the watershed that host both active and abandoned mines and ore-processing plants.  相似文献

Today's hourly workers are facing revised work schedules and shifting hours, which may have critical implications for employment relationships. This study considers the impact of work‐hours fit on key attitudes of hourly employees—perceived organizational support, job stress, work–family conflict, intent to turnover, and life satisfaction. We define work‐hours fit as the difference between an employee's desired number of hours and the actual hours worked, and we examine both the congruence of work‐hours fit and the degree of misfit. We also examine the moderating impact of the type of misfit, defined as working too many versus too few hours. Results indicate that, in our sample, hourly employees are typically not working the hours they prefer. As predicted, work‐hours fit impacts the attitudes we examined, and, when considering the type of misfit, congruence matters more for life satisfaction and intent to turnover. Results also indicate working too few hours impacts job stress and life satisfaction, whereas working too many effects work–family conflict. This paper demonstrates the importance of preferences, as a reflection of time/money resource trade‐offs, and offers ways for employers to improve work–family facilitation and strengthen their employment relationships. Aplysia californica, an opisthobranch mollusc, possesses a complex reproductive system that includes a seminal receptacle for the storage of exogenous sperm received from mating. Based on this reproductive anatomy, A. californica should have the ability to maintain and use viable exogenous sperm stores to fertilize multiple eggmasses for extended periods of time. Using controlled matings and careful observation of the development of eggmasses over time, we attempted to quantify A. californicas ability to store and use exogenous sperm following a single mating. On average, A. californica (240.6±31.7 g; mean±SE, n=9) produced 8.8±0.6 eggmasses containing 16.9±2.2×106 fertilized eggs over a period of 22.3±3.6 days following a single mating encounter. The maximum duration an individual A. californica produced fertilized eggs, following a single copulation, was 41 days. The primary factor determining the cumulative number of fertilized eggs produced from a single mating in A. californica was the mass of the sperm recipient (r=0.773, P<0.05, n=9). Our results demonstrated that A. californica are not sperm limited following a single mating as has been suggested for other opisthobranch molluscs by Leonard and Lukowiaks (1991) gamete-trading hypothesis.Communicated by P.W. This article examines develop-for-import projects financed by development loans and mixed credits supplied by export-import banks and other financial institutions of the central governments of France, Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany. The projects discussed are those producing bauxite, alumina, aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and tungsten, in developing market economies, Australia and Canada. The article estimates the volume of these metals committed to France, Japan and FRG to pay for loans and credits, examines the types of financial arrangement involved in develop-for-import projects, and considers the compatibility of these arrangements with the multilateral liberalized world trading system developed by the General Ageement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) over the past 40 years. To the extent that these arrangements do not fully reflect changes in international market forces, world trade in metals will tend to be distorted and discriminatory.  相似文献

Resource analysis is defined for this article as the process of integrating geological, technological, economic and other information to identify possible options and constraints in resource-based economic systems. The authors consider as examples two cases. In the first, energy resource options are considered in assessing available technological paths towards the specific target of providing energy for vehicle transport.
