Over 400tons of Pb enters Swiss soils annually at some 2000 military shooting ranges (MSRs). We measured elements in the leaves of 10 plant species and associated rhizospheric soil on the stop butt of a disused MSR. The geometric mean concentrations of Pb, Sb, Cu, Ni in rhizospheric soils were 10,171mg/kg, 5067mg/kg, 4125mg/kg and 917mg/kg. Some species contained Pb, Cu and Ni, above concentrations (30mg/kg, 25mg/kg and 50mg/kg) shown to be toxic to livestock. Most contaminants in leaves resulted from surface deposition. However, at soil Pb concentrations >60,000mg/kg, Equisetum arvense and Tussilago farfara took up >1000mg/kg Pb into the leaves. These plants are not hyperaccumulators, having <100mg/kg Pb in leaves at lower soil concentrations. Removal of soil with more than 30,000 Pb, from which one could smelt this metal to offset remediation costs, followed by revegetation, would minimise dust and hence leaf-borne contaminants. 相似文献

Protecting our water resources in terms of quality and quantity is considered one of the big challenges of the twenty-first century, which requires global and multidisciplinary solutions. A specific threat to water resources, in particular, is the increased occurrence and frequency of flood events due to climate change which has significant environmental and socioeconomic impacts. In addition to climate change, flooding (or subsequent erosion and run-off) may be exacerbated by, or result from, land use activities, obstruction of waterways, or urbanization of floodplains, as well as mining and other anthropogenic activities that alter natural flow regimes. Climate change and other anthropogenic induced flood events threaten the quantity of water as well as the quality of ecosystems and associated aquatic life. The quality of water can be significantly reduced through the unintentional distribution of pollutants, damage of infrastructure, and distribution of sediments and suspended materials during flood events. To understand and predict how flood events and associated distribution of pollutants may impact ecosystem and human health, as well as infrastructure, large-scale interdisciplinary collaborative efforts are required, which involve ecotoxicologists, hydrologists, chemists, geoscientists, water engineers, and socioeconomists. The research network “project house water” consists of a number of experts from a wide range of disciplines and was established to improve our current understanding of flood events and associated societal and environmental impacts. The concept of project house and similar seed fund and boost fund projects was established by the RWTH Aachen University within the framework of the German excellence initiative with support of the German research foundation (DFG) to promote and fund interdisciplinary research projects and provide a platform for scientists to collaborate on innovative, challenging research. Project house water consists of six proof-of-concept studies in very diverse and interdisciplinary areas of research (ecotoxicology, water, and chemical process engineering, geography, sociology, economy). The goal is to promote and foster high-quality research in the areas of water research and flood-risk assessments that combine and build off-laboratory experiments with modeling, monitoring, and surveys, as well as the use of applied methods and techniques across a variety of disciplines. 相似文献

AbstractObjective: It is well established within the traffic psychology literature that a distinction can be made between driving skill and driving style. The majority of self-report questionnaires have been developed for car drivers, whereas only limited knowledge exists on the riding skill and style of cyclists. Individual differences in cycling skills need to be understood in order to apply targeted interventions.Methods: This study reports on a psychometric analysis of the Cycling Skill Inventory (CSI), a self-report questionnaire that asks cyclists to rate themselves from definitely weak to definitely strong on 17 items. Herein, we administered the CSI using an online crowdsourcing method, complemented with respondents who answered the questionnaire using paper and pencil (n?=?1,138 in total). Our analysis focuses on understanding the major sources of variance of the CSI and its correlates with gender, age, exposure, and self-reported accident involvement as a cyclist.Results: The results showed that 2 components underlie the item data: Motor–tactical skills and safety motives. Correlational analyses indicated that participants with a higher safety motives score were involved in fewer self-reported cycling accidents in the past 3 years. The analysis also confirmed well-established gender differences, with male cyclists having lower safety motives but higher motor–tactical skills than female cyclists.Conclusions: The nomological network of the CSI for cyclists is similar to that of the Driving Skill Inventory for car drivers. The sulphur content of domestic waste water is similar to its phosphorus and nitrogen content. In conventional treatment processes sulphur compounds are converted to sulphate, thus all reaching the recipients and the oceans. In the aquatic metabolic cycle sulphate then acts as a catalyst towards anaerobiosis. Therefore, besides its efforts for removal of other nutrients, waste water technology should look for possibilities of minimizing the discharge of sulphurous effluents into the water course. The attitudes and behaviours of private landholders toward the conservation of a highly transformed and critically endangered
habitat, Overberg Coastal Renosterveld (OCR) (a grassy shrubland of the Cape Floral Region, South Africa) are described. Personal,
semistructured interviews were conducted with landholders, representing 40 properties in the Overberg region, on topics such
as management and utilisation of OCR, the depth of their knowledge of its conservation importance, what they perceive its
value to be, and the extent of their willingness to conserve it. General attitudes toward conservation incentives and provincial
conservation authorities were also investigated. Farmers more willing to conserve were younger, did not necessarily have a
better education, and owned larger farms (>500 ha) with a greater amount of remnant renosterveld (>300 ha) than those less
willing to conserve. Attitudes toward the OCR were largely negative, related to associated problem plants and animals and
the fact that it is believed not to be economically advantageous to retain it. However, farmers are of the opinion that provision
of incentives and increased extension support will provide practical positive inducements for conservation. Landholder education
is paramount to prevent further transformation of critically endangered habitats. The success of private-conservation programs
depends on the attitudes of landowners toward (1) the particular habitat or species to be conserved (which can vary depending
on the type of land use practised and the associated benefits and disadvantages of that habitat type); (2) the conservation
agency or extension officers responsible for that area; and (3) willingness of landowners to participate in a conservation
