The examination of oogenesis and reproductive pattern in three deep-sea demosponge species from the foot of the Barents Sea continental slope (Norwegian Sea, 2300 m, 75°18N; 9°55E), Thenea abyssorum, Trichostemma sol and Tentorium semisuberites, suggests that sexual reproduction is triggered by the vertical flux of particulate organic carbon at least in one species. All three species examined reproduce sexually and proved to be oviparous and gonochoristic. A considerable number of asexually produced reproductive units was found in Thenea abyssorum, but owing to morphological details the origin of these buds is equivocal, and asexual reproduction is therefore judged to be of minor importance. Oogenesis in the three species can be divided into two developmental periods and does not differ greatly from processes known from shallow water species, except for the almost complete absence of nurse cells. For Thenea abyssorum a distinct seasonal reproductive cycle was found. The onset of yolk accumulation coincides precisely with a maximum in vertical particle flux as detected in sediment trap studies (von Bodungen et al. 1994). In addition, prior to yolk accumulation the sponge tissue appears almost empty, without storage units. Once yolk accumulation (i.e. the second growth period) has started, gamete development and release are completed within a few weeks. Thus sexual reproduction is an important reproductive mode in deep-sea sponges, which may be triggered by the pulsed input of POC to this food-limited environment, the energy-dependent process of yolk accumulation being the most sensitive process. 相似文献

Thanks to developments in genomics,dietary recommendations adapted to genetic riskprofiles of individual persons are no longerscience fiction. But what are the consequencesof these diets? An examination of possibleimpacts of genetically tailor-made diets raisesmorally relevant concerns that are analogous to(medical-ethical) considerations aboutscreening and testing. These concerns oftengive rise to applying norms for informedconsent and for the weighing of burdens andbenefits. These diets also have a broaderimpact, especially because food patterns arefull of personal, social and cultural meanings.Diets will change one's food patterns and one'sattitude towards food, and this may implychanges in one's identity. We argue that suchan impact does not necessarily raise moralproblems. Moral concerns are, however, relevantif collective values and shared meanings infood practices are at issue. Therefore, thedevelopment of genetically tailor-made dietsdoes not merely require emphasis on weighingpersonal benefits and burdens and on informedconsent. The toxic combination effects of xenobiotics of different substance classes were investigated in human fibroblasts. Subtoxic concentrations of 4-chloroaniline enhanced the toxicity of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D, dimethylammonium salt) in an additive manner. A mixture of 4-chloroaniline, dicofol and 4-chlorophenol increased the toxicity of 2,4-D synergistically. The concentrations of the components used in the mixture were one third of their ?no observed effect concentrations” (NOEC). The combination of 4-chloroaniline, dicofol and 4-chlorophenol (without 2,4-D) at subtoxic concentrations also showed synergistic effects. In estuarine areas, bivalve species can be found in a variety of environments, where they experience large differences in
environmental conditions. In the present paper, the importance of different habitats (intertidal, subtidal and adjacent coastal
waters) for the persistence of the population was evaluated for the bivalve Macoma balthica (L.) in the western Dutch Wadden Sea estuary. Intra-specific variation in growth and reproductive output were followed during
the year and related to local abiotic conditions. Significant differences in growth and reproductive investment were found
between locations. Young individuals were mostly found in the intertidal area, where growth in terms of somatic mass was good.
These areas were not favourable for adult individuals, since growth in shell length was low and many individuals did not reproduce.
In the subtidal, where the highest densities were found, somatic and gonadal mass indices were low. Coastal areas had the
lowest densities and showed high growth in terms of shell length and body mass. The habitat with the highest reproductive
effort per individual was not the most important habitat in terms of reproductive output due to differences in density and
in size of the habitat type. For M. balthica, the subtidal habitat contributed the most to the reproductive output of the western Dutch Wadden Sea population although

This study aimed to investigate the value of echocardiography and Doppler before fetoscopic laser coagulation for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in the prediction of intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare preoperative parameters between fetuses with and without demise after laser surgery. Eighteen studies were included. Recipient twins have an increased risk of demise in case of preoperative absent/reversed flow (A/REDF) in the umbilical artery (odds ratio [OR] 2.76, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.78-4.28), absent or reversed a-wave in the ductus venosus (OR 2.32, 95% CI, 1.70-3.16), or a middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity > 1.5 multiples of the median (MoM) (OR 7.59, 95% CI, 2.56-22.46). In donors, only A/REDF in the umbilical artery (OR 3.40, 95% CI, 2.68-4.32) and absent or reversed a-wave in the ductus venosus (OR 1.66, 95% CI, 1.12-2.47) were associated with IUFD. No association was found between donor-IUFD and preoperative myocardial performance index (MPI). Two studies found an association between abnormal MPI and recipient demise. With this study, we have identified a set of preoperative Doppler parameters predictive of fetal demise after laser surgery. More research is needed to assess the utility of preoperative echocardiographic parameters such as the MPI in predicting IUFD. 相似文献
