The oxygen-binding properties of haemolymph from laboratory-reared Artemia franciscana were investigated in vitro. Adult female brine shrimp without eggs were acclimated to seven different combinations of salinity and oxygen. The oxygen affinity (P50) of unprocessed haemolymph rises with acclimation oxygen partial pressure (PO2) up to normoxic values, after which no influence of oxygen occurs. The increase in P50 with acclimation PO2 can be explained by the change in proportion of each of three different haemoglobins in the haemolymph. Salinity acclimation has no effect on haemolymph P50. The effects of the different major salts [NaNO3, NaCl, Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2], pH, and the metal-binding ligand EGTA on the oxygen-binding properties of buffered haemolymph (of shrimp acclimated to 10 salinity) were also studied. Little or no effect of these salts could be found. A small Bohr effect (pH 6.5 to 9.1, =-0.11) was noted. Addition of EGTA caused a significant decrease of the oxygen affinity at concentrations up to 50 mmoll-1.  相似文献

Littorina striata is a strictly Macaronesian, intertidal periwinkle with planktonic development. The species produces both nodulose and smooth shells, which co-occur at Ilheu de Vila Franca do Campo, a drowned crater situated about 1000?m off the south coast of São Miguel, Azores. The present work describes and analyzes the shell variation, temporal change and ecological distribution of the two shell types at this crater over a 3-year period. Nodulose shells were more common in the sheltered lagoon inside the crater, while smooth specimens dominated the outside of the wave-exposed crater. Moreover, nodulose specimens were smaller and weighed less compared to smooth ones. However, regardless of morphotype, shells from the lagoon had a smaller aperture and were less globose than those from the outside. Within an exposure regime, smooth specimens had a larger aperture. These patterns remained constant over time. They are tentatively interpreted as functional adaptations to thermal stress and wave exposure. The mechanisms that maintain these patterns are still unknown. Yet, aperture height of specimens transplanted from the lagoon to the outside increased markedly over a period of 5 months, whereas no comparable changes were observed in other experimental groups (i.e. transplanted from the outside into the lagoon, transplanted within the outside and transplanted within the lagoon; the latter two transplant groups being the blancos). This suggests that at least the aperture size in L. striata may be an ecophenotypically plastic trait.  相似文献

Projected future climate change will alter carbon storage in forests, which is of pivotal importance for the national carbon balance of most countries. Yet, national-scale assessments are largely lacking. We evaluated climate impacts on vegetation and soil carbon storage for Swiss forests using a dynamic vegetation model. We considered three novel climate scenarios, each featuring a quantification of the inherent uncertainty of the underlying climate models. We evaluated which regions of Switzerland would benefit or lose in terms of carbon storage under different climates, and which abiotic factors determine these patterns. The simulation results showed that the prospective carbon storage ability of forests depends on the current climate, the severity of the change, and the time required for new species to establish. Regions already prone to drought and heat waves under current climate will likely experience a decrease in carbon stocks under prospective ‘extreme’ climate change, while carbon storage in forests close to the upper treeline will increase markedly. Interestingly, when climate change is severe, species shifts can result in increases in carbon stocks, but when there is only slight climate change, climate conditions may reduce growth of extant species while not allowing for species shifts, thus leading to decreases in carbon stocks.  相似文献

Mega-epibenthic communities in Arctic and Antarctic shelf areas   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Mega-epibenthic shelf assemblages were investigated off Northeast Greenland and in the Weddell, Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas in the Antarctic using underwater video. In the Arctic a total of 94 taxa represented by more than 100 000 individuals were identified. Echinoderms, particularly brittle stars, were the most important elements of the mega-epibenthic fauna on the shelf off Northeast Greenland. Multivariate analyses of the species distribution revealed a conspicuous depth zonation in which an assemblage on the shallow banks can be clearly distinguished from that in the troughs. Between these a transitional zone with a heterogeneous benthic fauna was found. Physical disturbances are supposed to be responsible for the pronounced dominance patterns observed on the shallow banks. The fauna in the troughs, which consists of more than 50% suspension feeders, is diverse but low in numbers of individuals. In the Antarctic more than 115 000 individuals belonging to 169 taxa were analyzed. Obvious faunal differences exist between the stations in the Weddell Sea and the Bellingshausen/Amundsen Seas. Assemblages of suspension feeders dominated by sponges and bryozoans are prevalent on the shelf of the eastern Weddell Sea, but almost absent in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. These assemblages seem to be restricted to areas where bottom currents provide favourable feeding conditions. However, motile deposit feeders are more abundant in both regions where there is a soft bottom substrate with presumably slow bottom currents and reduced horizontal transport of organic particles.
