The purpose of this paper is to provide an account of the many dimensions of environmental assessment of residential development, so that planning policy may take substantive steps towards the environmental goal of sustainability in an urban context. It proceeds largely by literature review, drawing together research findings from a wide variety of sources originating in many different disciplines. The release rates and transformation processes that influence the mobility, biological uptake, and transfer of radionuclides are essential to the assessment of the health effects in the food chain and ecosystem. This study examined concentrations of 222Th in both soil and vegetation at a closed military training site, Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), New Mexico. Brazilian sludge was intentionally introduced into the topsoil in the early 1960s to simulate nuclear weapon accidents. Soil (60) and vegetation (120) samples were collected from 1996 to 2000 and analyzed for radionuclides and progeny. High-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to determine radionuclide activities. The results indicate that the thorium progeny were the predominant contaminant in soil and vegetation. PROBLEM: A number of studies have found that use of in-car phones by drivers can interfere with the cognitive processing necessary for making appropriate and timely vehicle control decisions. However, the specific linkage between communication-based distraction and unsafe decision-making has not been sufficiently explored. METHOD: In a closed-course driving experiment, 39 subjects were exposed to approximately 100 gaps each in a circulating traffic stream of eight vehicles on an instrumented test track that was wet about half the time. The subjects were at the controls of an instrumented car, which was oriented in a typical left-turn configuration (traffic-crossing situation in North America) and with parking brake on and the transmission in neutral. The subjects were instructed to press on the accelerator pedal when they felt that a gap was safe to accept. Their performances were monitored and incentives were provided for balancing safe decision-making with expeditious completion of the task. For half of the gap exposures (randomly assigned), each subject was required to listen and respond to a complex verbal message. RESULTS: When not distracted, the subjects' gap acceptance judgment was found to be significantly influenced by their age, the gap size, the speed of the trailing vehicle, the level of "indecision," and the condition of the track surface. However, when distracted, the subjects did not factor pavement surface condition into the decision process. On wet pavement, the subjects were judged to have initiated twice the level of potential collisions when distracted by the messages that they did when not distracted. DISCUSSION: Listening/responding to verbal messages may reduce the capacity of drivers to process adequately all the important information necessary for safe decision-making. The effects of the messages in our study seemed to cause the subjects to misjudge gap size and speed information when operating under the additional disadvantage of adverse pavement condition. SUMMARY: Attention to complex messages while making decisions about turning through gaps in an on-coming vehicle stream was associated with significantly increased unsafe decision making by subjects in our experiment when the additional complexity of wet surface condition was introduced. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: While the results reflected a somewhat artificial situation where the measure was signaled intention to act rather than the act itself, nevertheless, they do strongly suggest a scenario in which mental distraction could contribute to crash risk. With the rapid proliferation of telematics in the vehicle market, even with the laudable objectives represented by the Intelligent Transportation Systems initiative, there is a danger of the primary task of the driver being subordinated to a perceived need to enhance information flow to/from the external "world." The platinum group metals (PGM) Pt and Rh are emitted into the environment mainly by catalytic exhaust gas converters of cars and by effluents of hospitals, which use Pt based anti-cancer drugs. However, there is still a lack of information on the availability of these precious metals to the biosphere. As PGM accumulate in sediments of aquatic ecosystems we focused our study on the uptake of the noble metals by European eels, Anguilla anguilla. Therefore, eels were exposed in tap water and humic water containing Pt(4+) and Rh(3+) at a concentration of 170 and 260 microg/l, respectively. After an exposure period of 6 weeks the mean Pt levels in bile, liver, kidney and intestine of the exposed eels ranged between 68 ng/g and 840 ng/g and the mean Rh levels between 35 ng/g and 155 ng/g whereas the PGM levels of the unexposed controls were below the detection limit of 50 ng/g for Pt and 5 ng/g for Rh. Rh was also taken up by gill and spleen. No PGM uptake was found for muscle and blood. The pattern of metal distribution within the eel differed between Pt and Rh and was dependent on the water type. Many factors, including climate, resource availability, and habitat diversity, have been proposed as determinants of global diversity, but the links among them have rarely been studied. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we investigated direct and indirect effects of climate variables, host-plant richness, and habitat diversity on butterfly species richness across Britain, at 20-km grid resolution. These factors were all important determinants of butterfly diversity, but their relative contributions differed between habitat generalists and specialists, and whether the effects were direct or indirect. Climate variables had strong effects on habitat generalists, whereas host-plant richness and habitat diversity contributed relatively more for habitat specialists. Considering total effects (direct and indirect together), climate variables had the strongest link to butterfly species richness for all groups of species. The results suggest that different mechanistic hypotheses to explain species richness may be more appropriate for habitat generalists and specialists, with generalists hypothesized to show direct physiological limitations and specialists additionally being constrained by trophic interactions (climate affecting host-plant richness). 相似文献

The grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) has a dispersed social structure, within which female sleeping associations are common. These sleeping associations have been hypothesised to confer anti-predatory and thermoregulatory benefits, especially when rearing offspring. The genetic composition of these associations was determined using microsatellite markers to test predictions derived from kin selection theory. 161 (99 males, 62 females) individual M. murinus belonging to a free-living population in Ampijoroa, north-western Madagascar, were genotyped and observed over a total of 13 months distributed over the dry seasons of 3 successive years (1995-1997). Kin selection theory predicts that these female associations should consist of closely related members, and that female philopatry and male natal dispersal should characterise the dispersal pattern within this species. These predictions were confirmed by the data. Five out of six female sleeping groups consisted of one or more closely related dyads. Females that slept alone did not have close female kin in the vicinity or within the population at all. Closely related female dyads lived in significantly closer proximity than closely related male dyads and closely related male-female dyads showed intermediate proximity. In combination with the result that females possessed significantly more relatives within the population than males, these findings support the behavioural hypotheses of female philopatry and male natal dispersal. Matrilinear grouping patterns and sex-biased dispersal are therefore genetically established in a dispersed primate social organisation for the first time. The results further indicate that several generations of mouse lemurs live together within a given area, implying both an effective mechanism of kin recognition to avoid father-daughter incest and the potential for social learning to ensure individual recognition. 相似文献

Phthalates have long been used as plasticizers to soften plastic products and, thus, are ubiquitous in modern life. As part of the Bavarian Monitoring of Breast Milk (BAMBI), we aimed to characterize the exposure of infants to phthalates in Germany. Overall, 15 phthalates, including di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), three primary metabolites of DEHP [mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), and mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP)], and two secondary metabolites of DEHP were analyzed in 78 breast milk samples. We found median concentrations of 3.9 ng/g for DEHP, 0.8 ng/g for DnBP, and 1.2 ng/g for DiBP, while other parent phthalates were found in only some or none of the samples at levels above the limit of quantitation. In infant formula (n=4) we observed mean values of 19.7 ng/g (DEHP), 3.8 ng/g (DnBP), and 3.6 ng/g (DiBP). For MEHP, MiBP, and MnBP, the median values in breast milk were 2.3 μg/l, 11.8 μg/l, and 2.1 μg/l, respectively. The secondary metabolites were not detected in any samples. Using median and 95th percentile values, we estimated an "average" and "high" daily intake for an exclusively breast-fed infant of 0.6 μg/kg body weight (b.w.) and 2.1 μg/kg b.w., respectively, for DEHP, 0.1 μg/kg b.w. and 0.5 μg/kg b.w. for DnBP, and 0.2 μg/kg b.w. and 0.7 μg/kg b.w. for DiBP. For DiNP, intake values were 3.2 μg/kg b.w. and 6.4 μg/kg b.w., respectively, if all values in milk were set half of the detection limit or the detection limit. The above-mentioned "average" and "high" intake values corresponded to only about 2% to 7%, respectively, of the recommended tolerable daily intake. Thus, it is not likely that an infant's exposure to phthalates from breast milk poses any significant health risk. Nevertheless, other sources of phthalates in this vulnerable phase have to be considered. Moreover, it should be noted that for infants nourished with formula, phthalate intake is of the same magnitude or slightly higher (DEHP) than for exclusively breast-fed infants. 相似文献
