Two different Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) cohorts originating from 60°N (Bergen) and 69°N (Tromsø) were investigated in equal environmental conditions to study their different physiological responses to the same environment. A two-plus-two-bag mesocosm study was carried out between March and July 1998, in Håkøybotn, Tromsø, in order to determine development and mortality rates of the two parallel cohorts of C. finmarchicus. For practical reasons, the cohort from Bergen was incubated 10 days earlier than the Tromsø cohort. Consequently, they were exposed to elevated food conditions as compared to the Tromsø cohort. A high initial mortality among the Bergen cohort could clearly be ascribed, by genetic discrimination, to "contamination" with C. helgolandicus. After this initial mass mortality, the mortality was constantly 0.03-0.04 dayу. In cohorts starting from naupliar stage I, there was no significant difference in development or growth, the median development time (NI-CIV) differing by only 7 days (~6%). The difference in development time can be explained to a large extent (~4 days) by temperature differences. This is substantiated with model simulations using a physiological model developed for C. finmarchicus. There was a time lag in incubation between the two cohorts, resulting in elevated temperature during incubation of the Tromsø cohort. A fraction of both cohorts differentiated sexually at stage CV, with males differentiating before females. Females from both cohorts produced eggs, but specific egg production differed significantly (P>0.001, t-test). This was supported by elevated RNA:DNA ratio in females from the Bergen cohort. Both cohorts demonstrated quite similar development and physiological growth rates and, consequently, are considered to belong to the same genetic population inhabiting the Norwegian Shelf. The study demonstrates that C. finmarchicus is capable of adaptation to changes in environment and, thereby, demonstrates a significant physiological plasticity.  相似文献

An anticyclonic slope water oceanic eddy (SWODDY), named AE6, was sampled in the southern Bay of Biscay from 12 to 31 August 1998 to assess changes in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton assemblages related to the mesoscale feature. SWODDY AE6 showed characteristic biological signatures. A twofold increase in chlorophyll a concentration was found at the eddy centre relative to surrounding waters. Picoplankton cells accounted for a lower fraction of total chlorophyll a values at the eddy centre (44–50%) than outside the eddy (54–61%). Microscopic cell counts and HPLC pigment analysis showed that diatoms were almost entirely confined to the eddy centre, but both techniques yielded different results when studying other phytoplankton groups. Microscopic cell counts indicated that the spatial distribution of diatoms, dinoflagellates and unidentified flagellates was significantly influenced by SWODDY AE6, showing maximum abundance inside the mesoscale feature. HPLC pigment analysis provided more detailed information about the composition of pico–nanoplanktonic organisms. Pigment data processed by means of the CHEMTAX program showed "chlorophytes", "haptophytes" and "dinoflagellates II" (having haptophyte-like pigments and gyroxanthin-diester) as the more abundant "pigment classes" at the eddy centre, whereas dominance of "chlorophytes" and higher contribution of "cyanobacteria" (type Synechococcus) were estimated in the surrounding waters.Communicated by S.A. Using solar energy as a source of illumination, photosynthesis in 11 species of marine plankton algae was studied as a function of light intensity. From the photosynthesis-light curve for each organism, the saturation points (I k ) in different organisms were determined. Among the diatoms and flagellates, the highest I k (saturation point) values were found in Rhizosolenia styliformis and Dinophysis miles respectively. When the organisms were exposed to a portion of the visible spectrum starting from 700 m, the photosynthesis was found to be related to the radiant energy. The missing portions of the spectrum produced no significant change in the rate of photosynthesis. The photosynthetic response shown by the different organisms was strikingly similar, which signifies that, despite the qualitative dissimilarities which the organisms may possess in their pigment composition, they are capable of much chromatic adaptation.  相似文献

The fate of pelagic diatoms in marine coastal aphotic sediments was investigated from sediment profiles in western Scandinavian waters. We used three independent methods to estimate pigment pools in the sediment: (1) fluorometry, (2) high-performance liquid chromatography and (3) pigments estimated from germinable diatom cells, using the dilution extinction method. A strong positive relationship with an intercept close to zero was observed between fucoxanthin, a marker of diatoms, and chlorophyll a. The fucoxanthin/chl a ratio was on average 1.05, which was similar to monocultures of dominating diatom taxa, indicating that sedimentary chl a was to a large extent of diatom origin. Chl a and fucoxanthin correlated significantly and positively with, and where within the same order of magnitude as, corresponding substances predicted from live diatom cell numbers obtained with the dilution extinction method. This indicates that a major part of surficial sediment chl a was bound in live cells of pelagic diatoms. There was a consistent change in viable cells with sediment depth and with timing of dominating taxa, with the non-spore-forming Skeletonema costatum dominating in the surface sediment in March and May, while the spore forming Chaetoceros spp. dominated deep in the sediment and during periods outside of the spring bloom (February and August). This indicates that chl a is bound in several different cell pools with different degradation rates, depending on diatom taxonomy. Thus, diatoms originating predominantly from the spring bloom may provide an important direct link in the pelagic–benthic coupling in this area.  相似文献

The three juvenile phases of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus (algal phase: 5-15 mm carapace length, CL; postalgal phase: 15-45 mm CL, and subadults: 45-80 mm CL) occur in the reef lagoon at Puerto Morelos, Mexico. The algal phase abounds in this lagoon, which is covered by extensive seagrass-algal meadows, but the density of postalgal and subadult juveniles is low, owing to the scarcity of crevice-type shelters suitable for these phases. The feeding ecology of the three juvenile phases was investigated to examine whether spatial or temporal differences in food intake, diet composition, or nutritional condition occurred among phases and could partially account for the low abundance of the larger juveniles. Juveniles were collected by divers at night, from January to November 1995, throughout the mid-lagoon and back-reef zones. Percent stomach fullness, relative weight of the digestive gland (RWDG, an index of nutritional condition), percent frequency of occurrence and percent volume of food categories in the diet were compared between sexes, juvenile phases, molt stages (postmolt, intermolt, premolt), seasons, and sampling zones (mid-lagoon and back-reef zones). Significant differences in stomach fullness occurred only among molt stages, mainly because postmolt individuals had emptier stomachs. The main food categories in all juvenile phases were crustaceans (mostly hermit crabs and brachyurans) and gastropods, but the food spectrum was wide, including many other animal taxa as well as plant matter. In June 1995, the epibenthic macrofauna was sampled in five sites in the lagoon that differed in their amount of vegetation. The most abundant taxa in all sites were decapods and gastropods, but density and diversity measures showed that the distribution of these potential prey taxa for juvenile P. argus was rather patchy. Diet overlap in juvenile lobsters was high between sexes, juvenile phases, sampling zones, seasons, and molting stages, indicating that all juveniles fed on the same general food categories throughout time. The only factor that affected the RWDG was the juvenile phase. RWDG was significantly lower in subadults than in algal and postalgal phases, suggesting a poorer nutritional condition in the largest juveniles. This may be related to the scarcity of suitable shelters for large juveniles throughout the lagoon, which may preclude subadults from exploiting food resources in areas of the lagoon where shelter is limited.  相似文献

Temperature is one of the most critical environmental factors for fish ontogeny, affecting the developmental rate, survival and phenotypic plasticity in both a species- and stage-specific way. In the present paper we studied the egg and yolk-sac larval development of Pagellus erythrinus under different water temperature conditions, 15°C, 18°C and 21°C for the egg stage and 16°C, 18°C and 21°C for the yolk-sac larval stage. The temperature-independent thermal sum of development was estimated as 555.6 degree-hours above the threshold temperature (the temperature below which development is arrested), i.e. 7°C for the egg and 12.1°C for the yolk-sac larval stage. Higher hatching and survival rates occurred at 18–21°C. At the end of the yolk-sac larval stage, body morphometry differed significantly (p<0.05) between the temperatures tested. The growth rate of the total length increased as temperature rose from 16°C to 18°C, while in the range of 18–21°C it stabilized and was independent of water temperature. The estimated Gompertz growth curve for the yolk-sac larvae of P. erythrinus was (r2=0.992) for the 16°C, (r2=0.991) for the 18°C and (r2=0.981) for the 21°C treatment. Squid typically display considerable intra-specific plasticity in size and age-at-maturity in response to ambient environmental conditions, yet little is known of the mechanisms driving these variations. We examined the intra-specific variability in Nototodarus gouldi reproductive traits to determine patterns of energy allocation between somatic and reproductive processes over short temporal scales. Females caught during the cool months of May and July were larger, had slower lifetime growth, lower gonad investment, and better somatic condition than females caught during the warmer months, suggesting a trade-off between gonad investment and somatic condition in females. On the other hand, males showed a tight coupling between somatic condition and gonad investment for most months, with increases in somatic and gonad tissue occurring concurrently. In male squid, an increase in lifetime growth rate was coupled with an increase in the relative weights of somatic and reproductive structures, whereas in females, percent increase in body weight per day was correlated only with gonad development. Patterns of repro-somatic investment in mature females had implications for spawning strategies, since female squid with higher levels of gonad investment apparently released batches of eggs together as a group, regardless of body size, whereas females with low gonad investment possibly spawned their eggs independently of one another. In terms of life-history theory, male squid were able to respond rapidly to environmental fluctuations without compromising either the gonad or the soma. However, although mature females did not appear to respond as quickly to ambient conditions, female squid possibly produced two different reproductive strategies, possibly to maximise offspring survival in either a stable or a variable environment. Survival and growth of early post-settlement stages are critical for the development of seaweed populations. Fucoid germlings commonly settle in dense monospecific aggregates, where intraspecific competition and environmental variables (e.g. nutrient concentration and temperature) may affect survival and growth. Using factorial experiments, we determined the effects of settlement density (~10, ~50 and ~250 germlings cm–2), nutrient enrichment (from ~10 to ~40 µM N and from ~0.5 to ~2.5 µM P), and temperature (7°C and 17°C) on Fucus serratus and F. evanescens germlings in laboratory cultures over 3 months. Settlement density, nutrient concentration and temperature interactively affected growth of germlings, and the magnitude of this interaction varied between the two species. This represents the first record of such factorial interactions in Fucus spp. germlings. Intraspecific competition, estimated as the relative reduction in germling growth and survival from low to high densities, increased with decreasing nutrient concentration and increasing temperature in both species. While temperature and nutrient concentration had little effect on germling size distributions, size inequality and skewness generally increased with germling density, indicating that a few large individuals gained dominance and suppressed many smaller ones at high density. Self-thinning increased with settlement density and depended on nutrient concentration and species at high density. At high density, self-thinning increased with decreasing nutrient levels in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus. At low density, nutrient enrichment increased germling growth in F. evanescens, but not in F. serratus, whereas growth in both species was stimulated by nutrient enrichment at higher densities. These results suggest that germling growth and self-thinning are more sensitive to variation in nutrient concentration in F. evanescens than in F. serratus. The potential implications of our findings for the understanding of eutrophication-related abundance changes in both species in southern Norway are discussed.Communicated by L. The gonosomatic or gonadosomatic index [GSI=(ovary weight/fish weight)×100] has been widely used in fisheries science and experimental reproductive studies as a simple, low-cost measure of reproductive condition. However, its properties have not been fully evaluated, and several pitfalls, such as size-dependence and changes in ovarian allometry, may invalidate its use. In the present study, we examined ovarian allometry and the appropriateness of GSI for assessing ovarian activity in the Mediterranean sardine Sardina pilchardus. The analysis was based on a large sample of histologically scored females collected over an annual cycle in the eastern Mediterranean (Aegean and Ionian Seas). First, we examined GSI dependence on fish size by comparing ovary weight–on–fish weight relationships in different stages of oocyte development. The effects of recent spawning (incidence of postovulatory follicles) and intensity of follicular atresia were also addressed. In a subsequent step of the analysis, we applied generalized linear models (GLMs) to analyze the relationship between GSI and histological stage, taking into account the parallel effects of additional factors related to geographical region, month of capture, fish length and energetic reserves (fat stage, hepatosomatic index—HSI). Ovarian growth was isometric in all stages of oocyte development and states of atresia, but altered to positive allometric at the stage of oocyte hydration. Oocyte growth and intensity of atresia significantly affected GSI. Fish length, geographical region, month of capture, fat stage and HSI did not substantially affect GSI, further strengthening the appropriateness of the index for the Mediterranean sardine. Finally, we provide first evidence, based mainly on available (but yet limited) published information for other fish species, that: (1) the pattern of ovarian allometry may not be altered by fecundity variations and (2) the pattern of ovarian allometry may reflect the pattern of oocyte growth (i.e. isometric vs. allometric ovarian growth could reflect group-synchronous vs. -asynchronous oocyte development). Alternatively, the pattern of ovarian allometry could reflect the presence or absence of size dependency in the relative fecundity (eggs per gram of body weight) and/or egg size.
