We demonstrated that environmentally relevant levels of UVA and UVB can reduce sperm motility (UVA: by 38–58%; UVB: by 42–85%; P < 0.05) and subsequently fertilisation success (UVA: by 38–72%; UVB: by 91–98%; P < 0.05) of urchins (Anthocidaris crassispina) in a dose-dependent manner, implicating that recruitment of urchin populations might be reduced by UVR (ultraviolet radiation) prevailing in their natural habitats. Concomitantly, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was enhanced by UVA and UVB in a dose-dependent manner (UVA: by 1.3-fold; UVB: by 6.6–7.3-fold; P < 0.05), and the increase in ROS resulted in an increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) in urchin sperm (UVA: by 4.2–7.2-fold; UVB: by 2.3–2.7-fold; P < 0.05). This study demonstrated that ROS production and oxidative damages enhanced by UVR may account for the observed declines in sperm motility and fertilisation, and suggests that levels of UVR prevailing in the environment may pose a significant threat to the reproductive success of natural populations of urchins spawning in shallow waters.  相似文献

Crambe crambe is a common encrusting sponge found in the Mediterranean and Atlantic littoral. An analysis of a partial sequence (535 bp) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) was conducted in an attempt to determine population structure in this species. This is the first study of population genetics using this kind of marker in the phylum. Samples (N=86) were taken in eight populations separated by distances from 20 to 3,000 km, spanning from the western Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Low variability of this gene was found, as only two haplotypes were identified, along with low nucleotide diversity (=0.0006). However, the different frequencies found among populations revealed genetic structure and low gene flow between close populations, as expected from the dispersal biology of the species. The low variability found in sponges is in agreement with reports on cnidarians and points to a high conservation of mtDNA in diploblastic phyla.  相似文献

Although the role of macroinvertebrates in the nutrient cycling of the Indo-Pacific mangrove ecosystems is now a paradigm of ecological research, most of the research and scientific assumptions deal with decapod crustaceans alone. However, decapods are not the only representatives of mangrove macrobenthos and in certain mangals they are surely outnumbered by gastropods, especially by potamidids of the genus Terebralia. This paper aims at bridging the gap in the knowledge of the ecological role of the largest and most abundant potamidid species of the Indo-Pacific mangals, the semiterrestrial T. palustris. In particular we studied size structure and distribution in relation to micro-environmental factors and feeding ecology, both in terms of diet composition and grazing rate, of two populations of this gastropod colonising a Kenyan mangrove creek. In contrast to what has been described by various authors concerning other mangals, in our study site juveniles and adults of T. palustris were present throughout the whole forest, from the landward belt to the seaward fringe, locally reaching very high densities at various levels. Both life stages showed a preference for patches characterised by soil with high organic content; thus the habitat of juveniles largely overlapped with that of the adults, although they are known to occupy different ecological niches. Indeed, gut-content analysis confirmed that juveniles are detritivorous and adults are mainly leaf-litter consumers. In situ experiments on the grazing activity of the adult snails showed that, in contrast to the litter-consuming crabs, they feed in every light and tidal condition, for an hourly consumption rate of ~0.65 g per snail. Considering an average density of about 10.5 adults m–2, it is estimated that a total of 10.5 leaves m–2 are removed by adult snails in each tidal cycle (i.e. about every 6 h). T. palustris is the only leaf consumer capable of searching for food under water during high tide and is responsible for the removal of a great quantity of mangrove litter. The results of the present study strongly suggest that T. palustris plays a major role in the food web, mangrove litter degradation and nutrient cycling of the Kenyan mangal.Communicated by R. A comparative investigation of the chemical composition of Thalassiosira antarctica var. antarctica vegetative and resting stages revealed C:N and C:chl a ratios to be lower in vegetative cells. These trends primarily reflect vegetative levels of C/cell below, and N/cell and chl a/cell levels above those of spores. There was a change in chemical composition with the initial formation of resting spores, and spores continued to modify their composition while maintained in a cyclic light/dark regime for about one and one half weeks. Most notable was a net increase in carbon and chlorophyll a per cell. Spores then subjected to darkness for over one week appeared to retain most of the carbon and chlorophyll a previously synthesized. These findings support the idea that resting spores enhance the survival capabilities of a species under adverse conditions.  相似文献

We present here a morpho-functional and behavioural study of the feeding adaptations developed by a deep-sea invertebrate, the caprellid amphipod Parvipalpus major, in an environment temporarily deprived of external food supply. The animals were taken intact from bathyal muddy sediments using a classic Barnett multi-tub corer at depths ranging from 424 to 761 m. They were transferred to the laboratory, kept in tanks with their native sediment at a constant temperature (10°C) and their behaviour was studied by video analysis. Their morphology consists of elongated somites, with pereopods 5–7 ending in elongated curved dactyls, which are longer than those of more coastal species. Analysis of the literature shows that the largest caprellids inhabit the deepest and muddiest zones. This particular morpho-functional adaptation enables the species to adopt an originally erect and steady stance by fixing onto soft muddy sediment, thus improving its ability to prospect for food in its surrounding environment. For the most part, P. major balances its body at its anchorage point as it searches for food in the water column, but occasionally it bends down to the substrate, and tosses some sediment into the water column. Food is then selected from the particles that float down. Presumably, after exhausting the food supply in one area, the animal jumps into the water column and moves about a body length further on. This would appear to be an original strategy for foraging larger areas of organic matter from fixed, but temporary, positions. Finally, we show that caprellids are able to practise coprophagy. To conclude, we suggest that there is a positive correlation between body elongation and depth, with improved anchoring and coprophagy being an optimal way to conserve energy in conditions of limited diet and improve adaptation to life on deep-sea muddy bottoms.Communicated by S.A. Remote videography was used to investigate relationships between biological similarity and distance in Moreton Bay, Australia at site (1 km) and local (10 km) scales, and for separate biotic groups. Numerical analysis using Mantels tests to compare distance and similarity matrices showed that at both scales there was a negative correlation between similarity and distance, in that sites further apart were less similar than sites close together. The relationship, although significant (p <0.001), was quite weak (R2=5%) at the site-scale, with no significant (ANOVA with Tukeys pairwise comparisons, p >0.05) decline in similarity up to distances of 2.1–2.6 km. At the local-scale, between-site similarity was high (mean Bray-Curtis similarity >30% for 4th root transformed data) at scales of 10 km or less, and declined markedly with increasing distance. Scales of similarity for different broad taxonomic and functional groups within Moreton Bay were broadly consistent between groups and with the complete dataset. There was evidence of patchiness in the distributions of seagrass and anthozoans at scales less than 16 km. In other biotic groups there was an essentially monotonic decline in similarity with distance. The study showed that the spatial classification approach to habitat mapping is valid in this case, and that site spacing of less than 10 km is necessary to capture important components of biological similarity. Site spacing of less than 2.5 km does not appear to be warranted to capture additional components of biological similarity at the scales studied.Communicated by G.F. Humphrey, Sydney  相似文献

Mediterranean populations of Schizobrachiella sanguinea seem to span a wide range of contrasting benthic habitats. We have studied adult, larval, and recruit populations of S. sanguinea from sublittoral (approximately 10 m depth) communities at Blanes (Spain, NW Mediterranean). At the study site, the species colonises semi-obscure caves and, to a lesser extent, communities of sciaphilic algae. Our first goal was to show the periods of brooding, larval release, and recruitment. Plankton was collected about twice a week between July 1998 and June 2000 over an artificial reef. A total of 303 larvae were collected in 23 of the 102 days of sampling. At the study site the species shows a single, annual larval release period, which occurs from late March to June–July every year. Recruits were found from late May to late August 1999 and in late May 2000. A recruitment peak was observed in July 1999 and again in late May 2000. The presence of brooding adults corresponded to the periods of larval supply and recruitment. Our second goal was to investigate the causes of the variable distribution of the species along several communities in the north-west Mediterranean Sea. We describe adult distribution and the dynamics of larval supply, recruitment of early (15 days from settlement) and late (4 months from settlement) recruits. Patterns of larval presence and early recruit distribution along the communities on the reef did not reflect the adult distributions, whereas this was closely matched by the distribution of late recruits. Post-recruitment mortality strongly affected recruits of the PA (photophilic algae) and SA (sciaphilic algae) communities, whereas it was very low in the communities of SOC (semi-obscure caves). Mortality of recruits was density independent and colony survivorship in the SA communities, where recruitment was the highest, appeared strongly affected by competition with brown algae. Like the majority of cheilostomate bryozoans, S. sanguinea releases a coronate larva capable of active swimming and positive reaction to light. Such swimming abilities may allow larvae to actively select the substrate on which to settle and to avoid unsuitable substrates. It seems that larval behaviour does not explain the preference of S. sanguinea for sciaphilic habitats. High post-recruitment mortality due to various factors, especially competition with fast-growing algae, seems particularly relevant in determining the adult distributions observed.Communicated by S.A. The present study reports the gametogenic cycle of the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 in the Atlantic coast of Andalusia between May 2001 and May 2002. A total of 673 specimens of total weight ranging from 30 to 3,732 g were analysed. The gonad development was defined by means of histological methods and gonadosomatic indexes. Four gametogenic stages were identified in males (I immature, II maturing, III mature, IV spawning) and in females (I immature, II maturing, III pre-spawning, IV spawning). The sex ratio obtained was not significantly different from 1:1 (P>0.01). Mature males were found during the whole year, September being the month when the highest rate of sexually active individuals occurred (48%). In females, the gametogenic cycle commenced in December and ended in November, and spawning occurred between April and October, with two maximum peaks in August and September (48% in each). Size at sexual maturity was 850 g of total body weight for males and 1,250 g of total body weight for females. Males mature earlier than females.Communicated by S.A. Poulet, Roscoff  相似文献

This paper reports the fluvial fluxes and estuarine transport of organic carbon and nutrients from a tropical river (Tsengwen River), southwestern Taiwan. Riverine fluxes of organic carbon and nutrients were highly variable temporally, due primarily to temporal variations in river discharge and suspended load. The sediment yield of the drainage basin during the study period (1995–1996, 616 tonne km–2 year–1) was ca. 15 times lower than that of the long-term (1960–1998) average (9379 tonne km2 year–1), resulting mainly from the damming effect and historically low record of river water discharge (5.02 m3 s–1) in 1995. The flushing time of river water in the estuary varied from 5 months in the dry season to >4.5 days in the wet season and about 1 day in the flood period. Consequently, distributions of nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were of highly seasonal variability in the estuary. Nutrients and POC behaved nonconservatively but DOC behaved conservatively in the estuary. DOC fluxes were generally greater than POC fluxes with the exception that POC fluxes considerably exceeded DOC fluxes during the flood period. Degradation of DOC and POC within the span of flushing time was insignificant and may contribute little amount of CO2 to the estuary during the wet season and flood period. Net estuarine fluxes of nutrients were determined by riverine fluxes and estuarine removals (or additions) of nutrients. The magnitude of estuarine removal or addition for a nutrient was also seasonally variable, and these processes must be considered for net flux estimates from the river to the sea. As a result, nonconservative fluxes of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from the estuary are –0.002, –0.09 and –0.59 mmol m–2 day–1, respectively, for dry season, wet season and flood period, indicating internal sinks of DIP during all seasons. Due to high turbidity and short flushing time of estuarine water, DIP in the flood period may be derived largely from geochemical processes rather than biological removal, and this DIP should not be included in an annual estimate of carbon budget. The internal sink of phosphorus corresponds to a net organic carbon production (photosynthesis–respiration, p–r) during dry (0.21 mmol m–2 day–1) and wet (9.5 mmol m–2 day–1) seasons. The magnitude of net production (p–r) is 1.5 mol m–2 year–1, indicating that the estuary is autotrophic in 1995. However, there is a net nitrogen loss (nitrogen fixation–denitrification < 0) in 1995, but the magnitude is small (–0.17 mol m–2 year–1).  相似文献
